BACKGROUND/AIMS: To evaluate the surgical outcome of tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy for cholesterol granuloma of the middle ear in post-irradiated patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).
METHODS: Nine post-irradiated NPC patients diagnosed with cholesterol granuloma in a single-sided middle ear were included in this study. The time from radiotherapy termination to surgery ranged from 6 to 14 years (median 9 years). All patients underwent radical tympanoplasty with canal wall down or up mastoidectomy.
RESULTS: All the patients with NPC received radiotherapy of 68-75 Gy before surgery.

Eleven patients who had been surgically treated from 1988 to 1999 were retrospectively reviewed in order to evaluate the efficacy of ventilation tube insertion and mastoidectomy with, or without, mastoid obliteration for intractable middle-ear cholesterol granuloma. The mean age registered was 17.2 years at the time of surgical treatment. All cases were unilaterally affected. Five ears were treated with simple mastoidectomy coupled with the insertion of a ventilation tube, while six others had additional mastoid obliteration. The hearing prognosis was excellent with an improved post-operative

Collapse of the auditory meatus constitutes an audiometric trap provoking a false transmission deafness. It can also permanently affect audition, whether it be primary in origin or post-mastoidectomy. The association of conservation of the stapedial reflex and transmission deafness is noticed immediately, but this is in fact compatible with an interruption in the chain by incus luxation. These notions must be known in order to avoid operation in false transmission deafness, and inversely to decide when to explore the cavity in certain post-mastoidectomy sequelae with meatal collapse.

OBJECTIVE: It is generally recognized the most common pediatric otologic surgical procedure is ventilation tube insertion (VTI). Tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy are more frequently performed on adults. In this study we examined the incidence and age distribution of these procedures by use of a population-based birth cohort design, in order to provide an overall view of the role of these procedures in the pediatric population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the national health insurance research database in Taiwan. We retrieved data on all patients born in the years 2000 and 2001, subsequently

OBJECTIVE: Totally endoscopic ear surgery is a relatively new method for managing chronic ear disease. This study aimed to test the null hypothesis that open and endoscopic approaches have similar direct costs for the management of attic cholesteatoma, from an Australian private hospital setting.
METHODS: A retrospective direct cost comparison of totally endoscopic ear surgery and traditional canal wall up mastoidectomy for the management of attic cholesteatoma in a private tertiary setting was undertaken. Indirect and future costs were excluded. A direct cost comparison of anaesthetic setup

Background/Objectives: Recurrent acute otitis media (AOM) in children is known to cause cumulative cochlear and vestibular injury. Whether a single fulminant episode severe enough to require surgical intervention produces an analogous long-term audiovestibular signature, and whether infection severity contributes to outcome independently of cumulative episode count, is unclear. The present study addressed this gap. Methods: In this single-centre retrospective cohort study, 65 paediatric patients who had undergone surgical treatment for acute mastoiditis-the fulminant form of AOM-between July 2

Middle ear cholesteatoma, as a common ear disease, has been further understood in terms of its molecular mechanism, classification and staging, and it is generally believed that surgical treatment is the first choice, but there is no final conclusion on its surgical choice. Microscopic surgery includes complete or open radical mastoidectomy with or without reconstruction of the middle ear cavity, and their pros and cons have been debated for decades. In the past decade, a variety of surgical methods have been developed, including various improvements and combined operations that combine the ad

Cholesteatoma is the most severe middle ear disease. In most cases cholesteatoma results from under-aeration of the middle ear cleft. It is characterized by otorrhea and hearing loss, and may lead to severe complications, intra- and extra-cranial. There is no non-surgical treatment for cholesteatoma. Surgical treatment is the only option. Cholesteatoma is diagnosed by micro-otoscopy. When cholesteatoma is suspected and otoscopy is inconclusive, imaging is mandatory. The goal of treatment in cholesteatoma is to achieve a stable and safe ear. In most cases, upon diagnosis, cholesteatoma is quite

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic and the disproportional spread of the disease among otorhinolaryngologists raised concerns regarding the safety of health care staff. Therefore, a quantitative risk assessment for otologic surgery would be desirable. This study aims to quantitatively compare the risk of perioperative droplet formation between microscopic and endoscopic approaches.
STUDY DESIGN: Experimental research.
SETTING: Temporal bone laboratory.
METHODS: The middle ear of whole head specimens was injected with fluorescein (0.2 mg/10 mL) before endoscopic and microscopic epitympanectom

PURPOSE: The risk of temporal bone fractures in head trauma is not negligible, as injuries also depend on the resistance and integrity of head structures. The capacity of mastoid cells to absorb part of the impact kinetic energy of the temporal bone is diminished after open cavity mastoidectomy, even if the surgical procedure is followed by mastoid obliteration. The aim of our study was to evaluate the severity of lesions in auditory anatomical structures after a lateral impact on cadaveric temporal bones in which open cavity mastoidectomy followed by mastoid obliteration was performed, compar

Surgical methods of treating otitis media and its sequelae are discussed, according to the classification of otitis media presented in an earlier report. Surgical management of otitis media with effusion and recurrent purulent otitis media includes myringotomy and use of ventilation tubes. Occasionally, otitis media with effusion will lead to structural and other pathologic changes in the middle ear, and conservative treatments such as use of medication or tubes will not suffice. Indications and methods for exploratory tympanotomy and reconstruction of the middle ear are discussed. In such ins

A retrospective study was carried out to analyze treatment results for cholesteatoma at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. All patients undergoing primary surgical treatment from January 1, 1969 to December 31, 1973 were followed through October 1976. Treatment failures were based on the occurrence of postoperative cholesteatoma. The probability of being disease free for periods up to five years after original surgery was then estimated for each type of operation. Postoperative cholesteatoma occurred after atticotomy in 17%, intact canal wall mastoidectomy in 35%, and modified radic
