OBJECTIVE: To review the association between major causes of maternal mortality and vitamin A, trying to determine if these associations are causal in nature, and to highlight possible biological pathways that may explain vitamin A effects.
DESIGN: Literature review, observational studies and clinical trials. The strength of association was determined by applying Bradford Hill criteria of causality.
RESULTS: In a vitamin A deficient population, vitamin A is essential for adequate treatment of anaemia. While vitamin A does not seem to be capable of preventing uterine atony, obstetric or surgi

OBJECTIVES: Our purpose was to describe the effects of serious obstetric complications on maternal and perinatal outcome in pregnancies complicated by Hellp syndrome.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
PATIENTS: Sixteen patients managed from January 1994 through December 1998 in whom pregnancy was complicated by Hellp Syndrome.
RESULTS: The incidence of Hellp syndrome among women with severe preeclampsia and/or eclampsia (164 cases) was 9.7%. Fourteen cases occurred before and two after delivery. In nine cases, Hellp occurred before 32 weeks of gestation and later in two other cases. Mean g

Focus group discussions with people in Ekpoma, Nigeria, revealed them to be quite knowledgeable about haemorrhage in pregnancy and delivery. However, because of their inability to recognize early warning signs they continued traditional treatment even when clear evidence of danger existed. Furthermore, they tended not to seek help in clinics and hospitals because of sociocultural conditioning and a negative perception of the quality of care available. There were shortages of materials and adequately trained and committed personnel in the modern health institutions serving the community. An out

Maternal mortality in Latin America and the Caribbean is a health problem that reflects the existing inequalities in the Region, as expressed in the loss of more than 28,000 women every year as a result of abortions and complications of pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium. This situation is associated with the limited coverage and low quality of health and family planning services and, in particular, with the tremendous unmet need for family planning services in many countries of the Region. The risk approach is proposed as an effective method for enhancing health care, especially in the

Maternal mortality is one of the great neglected problems of health care in developing countries. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 500,000 women die each year from pregnancy-related causes, more than 98% of these deaths occurring in the developing world. Maternal mortality rates in developing countries are as much as 100 times higher than those seen in industrialized countries. The most common causes include obstructed labor and ruptured uterus, postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, postpartum infection, and complications of illegal abortion. It is suggested that no new o

Community inquiry on maternal mortality was conducted in a rural area of North India. Maternal deaths were identified by multiple informants and investigated by doctors. Amongst 257 deaths registered in women in the 15-44 year age group, 55(21.4%) were maternal deaths. Maternal mortality ratio was 230 per 100,000 live births. Major causes were antepartum and postpartum hemorrhage (18.2%), puerperal sepsis (16.4%), severe anemia (16.4%), abortion (9.1%) and obstructed labor (7.3%). This rapid, simple and low cost method is recommended for application in areas where vital registration system is

From an analysis of 11 abdominal pregnancy-related deaths and an estimated 5221 abdominal pregnancies in the United States, we estimated that there were 10.9 abdominal pregnancies per 100,000 live births and 9.2 per 1000 ectopic pregnancies; the mortality rate was 5.1 per 1000 cases. Although the risk of having an ectopic pregnancy is rising, the risk of abdominal pregnancy, which is probably always a sequel of a missed ruptured ectopic pregnancy, is apparently declining; this may be due to improved prenatal care. However, only one of nine women who reached the hospital alive had an accurate p

This review describes the changes in the causes of maternal deaths in a major referral hospital over a span of 55 years. There has been a significant decline in direct maternal deaths from infection, hemorrhage, and toxemia. Continued vigilance is needed since 58% of direct obstetric deaths in our hospital during the last 30 years were considered to have been preventable. Heart disease and nonobstetric infection as indirect causes of maternal deaths have decreased also. Greater effort is necessary to identify those patients with conditions that predispose to indirect deaths and to provide appr

The maternal mortality rate of 22.4 per 100,000 live births in 1973 is the lowest recorded in Austria. The figures for Austria are compared with the data from other European countries with similar health systems. Austria reflects the overall trend of a decreasing maternal mortality rate. 10 cases of maternal death recorded per 16,447 live births in the 2nd Department of Obstetrics, University of Vienna are presented and discussed with respect to the clinical diagnosis and compared with the main causes of maternal death in the national and international literature. As in other countries, haemor

INTRODUCTION: The postpartum period carries a high risk of suicide, one of the leading causes of maternal death in Europe. This study analyzes the incidence of suicide as a cause of maternal mortality within the first postpartum year in Spain.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from the National Institute of Statistics. Suicide records in Spain (2016-2023) were linked to birth and birth-loss certificates. Suicides during pregnancy or after losses <22 weeks were excluded due to lack of national registration data. Variables included year of death, maternal age, and time from delivery to

INTRODUCTION: Maternal mortality during pregnancy and childbirth is a key indicator of the quality of healthcare and is crucial for setting healthcare goals. In recent years, there has been a reported trend of decreasing maternal mortality rates worldwide.
AIMS: The current study aims to examine obstetrical and non-obstetrical causes associated with maternal mortality in Israel.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study examines maternal mortality cases in Israel from 2015 to 2022, using records obtained from Ministry of Health data and Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine publications. We comp

OBJECTIVE: Analysis of coincidental maternal mortality in Slovakia in the years 2007-2024 from the database of the Slovak Gynecological and Obstetric Society (enhanced surveillance system).
METHODS: Retrospective population analysis of maternal mortality from 2007 to 2024 focused on coincidental maternal deaths. Analysis of coincidental maternal death cases was carried out according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) for Maternal Mortality (ICD-MM).
RESULTS: Between 2007 and 2024, a total of 123 women died. The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) was 12.46 per 100 000 live b

Background/Objectives: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, are leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide and in Kazakhstan. This study aims to assess the burden of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and main maternal disorders in Almaty, Kazakhstan, using the disability adjusted life years (DALY) methodology. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of women aged 18 and above in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from 2018 to 2020. The medical claim data were retrieved from the Almaty city branch of the Republican Center for Electronic Health

There are multiple surveillance systems working to address the issue of maternal mortality in Missouri. These surveillance systems have key methodological differences in their definitions, terminology, inclusion criteria, and purpose. This study aims to provide an understanding of the practical effects of these programmatic differences regarding what cases are included and how this can impact the interpretations of the data and influence policy decisions. To accomplish this, death certificates identified by the Missouri Vital Statistics program, the Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System, and

INTRODUCTION: Pakistan is among the ten countries that account for 60% of global maternal mortality. Lack of accurate data on maternal mortality and a complex interrelation of access and quality of healthcare services, healthcare delivery system, and socio-economic and demographic factors contribute significantly to inadequate progress in reducing maternal mortality.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A population-based prospective cohort study was conducted in a rural district of Pakistan using data obtained from an enhanced surveillance system. A total of 7572 pregnancies and their outcomes were recorde
