In an animal experiment the middle face of sheeps was fractionated. The reaction of the maxillary mucosa was histologically examined in determined temporal intervals and compared with the reactions of the mucosa of sinus maxillary in man after an accident with fractures in the middle face. In contrast to other authors it could be proved unambiguously that the maxillary mucosa of the sheep as well as the maxillary mucosa in man react with a reparative curable inflammation after fractures in the middle face. Therefore a sanitation because of inflammation prophylactic reasons is not indicated.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The mandible is an independent and protruding bone structure in the lower third portion of the human facial skeleton. Because of its prominent and unprotected position, the mandible is a primary site of facial trauma. Previous studies have not comprehensively discussed the association between the mandibular fractures and concomitant fractures of facial bones, the trunk, or limbs. This study analyzed the epidemiology of mandibular fractures and their correlation with concomitant fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study enrolled 118 patients with a total of 202 ma

BACKGROUND: This article describes the management of a complicated crown root fracture.
CASE REPORT: A young patient presented with a crown root fracture of the maxillary left central incisor with an oblique subgingival fracture line. A multidisciplinary treatment approach including endodontic treatment, orthodontic extrusion, surgical extraction and intra-alveolar repositioning was used to gain sufficient crown length of the fractured maxillary incisor. The coronally repositioned maxillary left central incisor was stabilised by sutures and a resin wire splint. A resin core was built up follo

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous fracture of the maxillary sinus is usually associated with enophthalmos and pre-existing sinus disease.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of spontaneous maxillary sinus fracture without enophthalmos and with no preceding history of trauma or evidence of sinusitis.
DISCUSSION: The closest condition to that presented is silent sinus syndrome. The differences between our case and this syndrome are reviewed. There are no previously reported cases of lateral wall maxillary fracture and associated facial surgical emphysema following nose-blowing.

A retrospective review of 328 Le Fort fractures has identified 20 (6.1%) of these fractures as edentulous. A review of treatment of the patients was conducted. Conservative (nonsurgical treatment methods) and classic open reductions produce aesthetic and functional results that lead to posterior and oblique positioning of the maxillary occlusal segment in comminuted fractures. Attention to positioning the maxilla by relating it to the mandible through maxillomandibular fixation minimized these deformities. Establishing maxillary-mandibular relationships in edentulous fractures, therefore, seem

Through analysis of case series from medical record review, this article demonstrates how lag screw fixation may be used to effectively treat obliquely oriented maxillary, zygomatic, and orbital rim fractures. Lag screw fixation of midface fractures has been overshadowed by other readily available plate fixation techniques. Nonetheless, lag screw fixation provides quick, stable, and effective reduction of obliquely oriented maxillary, zygomatic, and orbital fractures without risk of plate exposure and with potentially superior primary osteosynthesis. Lag screw fixation remains an excellent alt

This paper presents a review of injury dynamics of jaw fractures sustained by 1374 patients in the county of Stockholm during 1978-1980 = M1 (795 patients) and 1988-1990 = M2 (579 patients). The material comprised 1620 mandibular (M1 = 904, M2 = 716) and 439 maxillary (M1 = 249, M2 = 190) fractures. Forty-three per cent of the mandibular fractures and 40% of the maxillary fractures were single fractures in M1. The corresponding figures for M2 were 35% and 43%. During both periods the anatomical region most frequently fractured was the mandibular condyle (M1 = 35%, M2 = 29%). Violence was the c

INTRODUCTION: Coronoid fractures are relatively rare fractures of the craniofacial skeleton, but typically occur concomitantly with high-velocity craniofacial trauma to the midface and lateral mandible. Management of coronoid fractures may vary, but when surgical excision is indicated, treatment frequently involves an intraoral approach through a posterior intraoral incision along the mandibular ramus. Here, the authors present an alternative and novel approach to the coronoid process based on the Keen approach to the lateral midface.
TECHNICAL NOTE: The authors present a patient with a left

Ectopic sinonasal third molar is a rare condition characterized by the aberrant position of the third molar in the maxillar sinus. The etiology of the teeth in the maxillary sinus is commonly associated to trauma and iatrogenic dental procedures. We present the clinical case of a 33-year-old man who presents an ectopic tooth in the right maxillary sinus, located in the orbital floor, who requires endoscopic control through a maxillary approach when performing the extraction. The endoscopic technique is being increasingly used in the maxillofacial field. Thanks to the endoscopic control for com

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive approaches to severe panfacial fractures are being used increasingly to reduce surgical trauma and the related complications. In this study, it was aimed to determine the ideal surgical approaches in severe panfacial fractures.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with severe panfacial fractures were included in this study. Minimally invasive approaches were used for Le Fort III fracture in six patients, for Le Fort II fracture in four patients, and for bilateral maxillary and orbital floor fractures in six patients. We used subciliary, intraoral vestibular, lateral eyebro

In recent years, endoscope-assisted balloon fixation using transantral and endonasal approaches has gained popularity as a minimally invasive treatment for orbital floor fractures. However, the optimal duration for balloon placement and the efficacy of the method have not been fully evaluated. The authors report their assessment of this method using postoperative and chronological measurements of the maxillary sinus volume.Fourteen patients with blowout fracture of the orbital floor who underwent reduction using endoscopic transantral and endonasal approaches followed by 6-week fixation with a

AIM: To determine any patient, technique or material factors that were significantly associated with post fracture in metallic post systems.
SUMMARY: Eighty-five fractured metal posts were retrieved over a 5-year period from a total of 84 patients who attended a dental hospital for treatment. A record was kept of the patient's dentition to identify the tooth with the fractured post, the number of teeth present, the excursive guidance scheme and the likely post design and material. Radiographs of 67 of these teeth were available. The presence or absence of a periapical lesion was noted as was

This article presents a retrospective analysis of a selective use of rigid fixation among 62 children with facial fractures, treated at a Level I trauma center over a 5-year period (1986-1991). There were 21 mandible fractures, 11 orbital fractures, 11 zygomaticomalar complex fractures, 7 nasal fractures, 5 maxillary fractures, 3 pan-facial fractures, 2 nasal-orbital-ethmoidal complex fractures, and 2 frontal sinus fractures. Only 18 children had rigid fixation of their injuries. Complications of Le Fort upper facial fractures repaired with rigid fixation involved perioperative sinusitis; one

This case report describes a complex approach to orthodontic preparation for surgical treatment of a Class III facial skeletal deformity in a patient who suffered a unilateral maxilla fracture that also featured maxillary left central incisor avulsion, maxillary right central incisor extrusion, and maxillary right lateral luxation. A 12-mm negative overjet was formed by extraction of the maxillary right lateral incisor and closure of the residual space by retraction of the maxillary right central incisor, maxillary left lateral incisors, and maxillary right and left canines. Forward and impact

A 37-year-old scuba diver developed sudden severe headache, mid-facial pressure/pain and diplopia while diving. Upon examination, he had signs and symptoms consistent with silent sinus syndrome (SSS), including bilateral enophthalmos, hypoglobus, and diplopia/strabismus in conjunction with CT findings of occluded maxillary sinus ostia, atrophic/collapsed maxillary sinuses, and bilateral orbital floor fractures with fat herniation. As there was no history of trauma or chronic sinusitis, this rare case of bilateral SSS was deemed the cause of the spontaneous fractures (i.e. barotrauma secondary

Traumatic intractable epistaxis following fractures of the facial and base of skull rarely may be life-threatening. Common sites of injury are the internal carotid and maxillary artery. When conventional methods of arresting haemorrhage fail, the choices are then an open arterial ligation or superselective embolisation. This paper presents a patient with life-threatening epistaxis from a Le Fort type II fracture. Angiography revealed a maxillary artery injury in which superselective embolisation was performed and the haemorrhage was successfully arrested. A literature review of this technique

We present a case of an adolescent who sustained multiple facial fractures following a high-speed, head-on skiing collision. The patient presented to a level 1 trauma centre with bilateral LeFort I, LeFort II, naso-orbital ethmoid fractures and superior maxillary displacement to the level of the orbits requiring a staged operative approach to (1) disimpact the maxillary LeFort I segment and (2) reduce and fixate the multilevel facial fractures. The patient was discharged home with close follow-up, and after 1 year, had preservation of appropriate facial proportions without complications. This
