The news media and the agenda for noncommunicable diseases before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: Losing the competition for coverage and framing responsibility for action in Malawi.

Chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs, such as cardiovascular and diabetes) pose an increasing burden in low-and middle-income countries, accounting for ~80% of premature (under age 70) NCD deaths globally. Despite their significant and rapidly growing burden-and status under United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.4-little is known about the agenda status of NCDs in lower-income countries. Though coverage of health issues shapes policymaker and public awareness and opinions, news media is an under-analyzed agenda setting arena. This study explores levels of priority for 10 NCDs compare

#KnowMyViralLoad: how community-led demand creation holds a key to routine viral load testing scale-up in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Viral load testing (VLT) is key to detecting treatment failure and is central to HIV management. However, low demand for routine VLT among people on antiretroviral treatment limits opportunities for evidence-based HIV management and transmission reduction. Demand generation for routine VLT can improve through empowering communities of people living with and affected by HIV with relevant, tailored and actionable information on VLT. We sought to identify the most appropriate and context-relevant media platforms and audiences for VLT-related demand generation campaigns in 6 African co

Stigmatizing bioterrorism as a public health concern: The case of anthrax in US media.

This work approaches the role of media in stigmatizing anthrax as a bioweapon in the United States, transitioning the disease from a relatively obscure zoonotic pathogen to a symbol of bioterrorism. By analyzing over 20,000 articles published between 1979 and 2023, we trace how the 2001 anthrax attacks in the US significantly shifted media coverage to focus anthrax as a national security, terrorism, and public health concern. This framing reinforced the stigmatization of anthrax as a militarized threat, even during periods of low assessed risk. The study uses a novel data science approach inte

Social media, drinking motives, and alcohol use in young adults: a longitudinal mediation study.

Alcohol use remains a significant problem among young adults (YAs), and growing evidence suggests exposure to alcohol-related content (ARC) on social media may contribute to increased alcohol use. ARC often portrays drinking as rewarding and/or normative, potentially shaping drinking motives, which are key predictors of alcohol use. Therefore, the present study sought to longitudinally examine if drinking motives mediate the associations between (a) exposure to peers' ARC on social media and (b) perceived number of friends posting ARC and YA alcohol use over an 8-week period. A sample of N = 2

Development and psychometric validation of the media-influenced healthcare violence perception scale in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Violence against healthcare professionals is a growing public health concern with significant implications for workforce sustainability, work-life integration, quality of care, and patient safety. Although the prevalence and consequences of violence in healthcare are well documented, the ways in which media exposure shapes public perceptions, emotional responses, and the psychosocial well-being of healthcare workers remain insufficiently measured. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically validate the Media-Influenced Healthcare Violence Perception Scale (MHVPS). METHODS: An

Recent policy recommendations won't protect young people from alcohol-related content on social media: what needs to change?

Objective: The federal Australian government has introduced legislation to require social media platforms to restrict access to their platforms for young people under 16 years of age. Amongst the conversations about protecting the health and wellbeing of young people, we have yet to see discussion on the impact of alcohol imagery as a pervasive 'Требует внимания' industry on social media. This is problematic because young people consume a large amount of social media content and are exposed to glamorised alcohol depictions and targeted advertising. Conclusions: According to current regulations, the sp

The Pearls and Perils of Social Media in Dermatology.

Social media has become an integral component of modern dermatologic practice, leadership, and branding. While digital engagement offers substantial benefits-including patient education, professional visibility, and practice growth-it simultaneously presents ethical, legal, and reputational hazards. This article examines both the pearls and perils of social media use in dermatology, emphasizing evidence-informed engagement strategies, common pitfalls, and targeted risk-mitigation frameworks. Dermatologists who approach social media with intentionality, professionalism, and structural safeguard

Airborne acrolein induces keratin-8 (Ser-73) hyperphosphorylation and intermediate filament ubiquitination in bronchiolar lung cell monolayers.

The combustion product acrolein is a key mediator of pulmonary edema in victims of smoke inhalation injury. Since studying acrolein toxicity in conventional in vitro systems is complicated by reactivity with nucleophilic culture media constituents, we explored an exposure system which delivers airborne acrolein directly to lung cell monolayers at the air-liquid interface. Calu-3 lung adenocarcinoma cells were maintained on membrane inserts such that the basal surface was bathed in nucleophile-free media while the upper surface remained in contact with acrolein-containing air. Cells were expose

Reactions to media violence: it's in the brain of the beholder.

Media portraying violence is part of daily exposures. The extent to which violent media exposure impacts brain and behavior has been debated. Yet there is not enough experimental data to inform this debate. We hypothesize that reaction to violent media is critically dependent on personality/trait differences between viewers, where those with the propensity for physical assault will respond to the media differently than controls. The source of the variability, we further hypothesize, is reflected in autonomic response and brain functioning that differentiate those with aggression tendencies fro

Bulimia Nervosa in Adolescents: Impact of Childhood and Adolescent Sexual Abuse History and the Mediating Role of Social Media.

The aim of this study was to analyze whether exposure to esthetic content aligned with beauty standards on social media mediates the relationship between a history of childhood/adolescent sexual abuse and bulimic symptomatology in adolescents, and whether sex moderates these pathways. Participants were 283 secondary school students (52.6% female) from Chimbote, aged 13 to 17 years (M = 15.2, SD = 1.14). The following instruments were administered: the sexual abuse dimension of the CTQ-FC, the bulimia dimension of the EAT-26, and an ad hoc questionnaire assessing exposure to esthetic content on

#Drink or #Drunk? An Experimental Study Investigating the Impact of Positive and Negative Alcohol Depictions in Ephemeral Social Media on Alcohol Cognitions.

Exposure to alcohol on social media has been linked to offline alcohol use. With the rise of ephemeral messages (e.g. Snapchat), social media users are exposed to a wider variety of alcohol depictions, ranging from negative to more positive ones. However, it remains unclear how exposure to differential alcohol depictions influences offline alcohol cognitions and who is most susceptible to them. We conducted an online between-subjects experiment manipulating the type of alcohol-related social media depictions (negative vs. positive vs. control) to investigate the impact on alcohol outcome expec

US State Policies Regarding Social Media: Do Policies Match the Evidence?

UNLABELLED: Policy Points State policymakers have moved rapidly to regulate adolescent social media use, frequently stating concerns about mental health, harmful content exposure, and developmental impacts. The degree to which policymakers' arguments in favor of state social media regulations correspond to the state of the current scientific evidence remains questionable. The evidence to substantiate policymakers' assertions has substantial limitations in the ability to answer causal questions, but some promising directions are emerging around targeted protections for highly susceptible youth.

Hyperglycemia exacerbates cadmium-induced glomerular nephrosis.

Current research suggests that cadmium (Cd) exposure may be associated with the progression of diabetic nephropathy; however, the details of this relationship are insufficiently understood. The present study investigated the effects of elevated glucose on Cd-induced toxicity to glomerular cells using in vitro and in vivo models, and it demonstrated that Cd exposure and the hyperglycemia of diabetes acting together increased the risk of developing glomerular nephrosis. In vitro, human podocytes were exposed to a DMEM low-glucose media without (control), or with Cd (as CdCl2), or a high-glucose

Social media's influence on rhinoplasty: the impact of digital platforms on nasal esthetics - a review.

Social media has emerged as a major influence on contemporary perceptions of beauty and cosmetic surgery, particularly among younger populations. As one of the most commonly performed esthetic procedures worldwide, rhinoplasty has been increasingly affected by the widespread use of platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube. This narrative review explores the influence of social media on rhinoplasty trends, patient motivations, expectations, psychological outcomes, and ethical considerations. Current evidence suggests that exposure to cosmetic surgery-related content,

Health Effects of Radon Exposure.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive material that is formed as the decay product of uranium and thorium, and is estimated to contribute to approximately half of the average annual natural background radiation. When inhaled, it damages the lungs during radioactive decay and affects the human body. Through many epidemiological studies regarding occupational exposure among miners and residential exposure among the general population, radon has been scientifically proven to cause lung cancer, and radon exposure is the second most common cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking. However,

Social Media Use and Digital Professionalism in Nursing Practice: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: The rapid growth of social media has transformed communication, with more than 5.66 billion users worldwide in 2025 who spent an average of 141 minutes daily on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and TikTok. Nurses frequently use social media to exchange work-related information, communicate with others, and relieve stress. While social media can support professional development, excessive or inappropriate use at work may compromise patient care. Despite widespread use, research on nurses' demographic factors and actual workplace social media behaviors remain
