Gradients of functional organization in posterior parietal cortex revealed by visual attention, visual short-term memory, and intrinsic functional connectivity.

Visual attention and visual working memory tasks recruit a common network of lateral frontal cortical (LFC) and posterior parietal cortical (PPC) regions. Here, we examine finer-scale organization of this frontoparietal network. Three LFC regions recruited by visual cognition tasks, superior precentral sulcus (sPCS), inferior precentral sulcus (iPCS), and mid inferior frontal sulcus (midIFS) exhibit differential patterns of resting-state functional connectivity to PPC. A broad dorsomedial to ventrolateral gradient is observed, with sPCS connectivity dominating in the dorsomedial PPC band, iPCS

Improving action video games abilities increases the phonological decoding speed and phonological short-term memory in children with developmental dyslexia.

Learning to read is extremely difficult for about 10% of the children because they are affected by a heritable neurobiological disorder called developmental dyslexia (DD). The causal role of cognitive deficits typically associated to DD can be investigated through intervention studies. It has been demonstrated that visual-attention and reading speed could be simultaneously improved by using action video game (AVG) training both in shallow and deep alphabetic orthographies. Here, in a clinical study we showed that after this general-domain behavioral intervention both the phonological decoding

Haploinsufficiency of the 22q11.2 microdeletion gene Mrpl40 disrupts short-term synaptic plasticity and working memory through dysregulation of mitochondrial calcium.

Hemizygous deletion of a 1.5- to 3-megabase region on chromosome 22 causes 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), which constitutes one of the strongest genetic risks for schizophrenia. Mouse models of 22q11DS have abnormal short-term synaptic plasticity that contributes to working-memory deficiencies similar to those in schizophrenia. We screened mutant mice carrying hemizygous deletions of 22q11DS genes and identified haploinsufficiency of Mrpl40 (mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit protein 40) as a contributor to abnormal short-term potentiation (STP), a major form of short-term synaptic pl

Partially overlapping sensorimotor networks underlie speech praxis and verbal short-term memory: evidence from apraxia of speech following acute stroke.

We tested the hypothesis that motor planning and programming of speech articulation and verbal short-term memory (vSTM) depend on partially overlapping networks of neural regions. We evaluated this proposal by testing 76 individuals with acute ischemic stroke for impairment in motor planning of speech articulation (apraxia of speech, AOS) and vSTM in the first day of stroke, before the opportunity for recovery or reorganization of structure-function relationships. We also evaluated areas of both infarct and low blood flow that might have contributed to AOS or impaired vSTM in each person. We f

Brain Regions Underlying Repetition and Auditory-Verbal Short-term Memory Deficits in Aphasia: Evidence from Voxel-based Lesion Symptom Mapping.

BACKGROUND: A deficit in the ability to repeat auditory-verbal information is common among individuals with aphasia. The neural basis of this deficit has traditionally been attributed to the disconnection of left posterior and anterior language regions via damage to a white matter pathway, the arcuate fasciculus. However, a number of lesion and imaging studies have called this notion into question. AIMS: The goal of this study was to identify the neural correlates of repetition and a related process, auditory-verbal short-term memory (AVSTM). Both repetition and AVSTM involve common elements

Phonological short-term memory and central executive processing in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder with/without dyslexia--evidence of cognitive overlap.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with/without dyslexia was investigated using a double dissociation design. Neuropsychological performance representing the core deficits of the two disorders was measured in order to test the common deficit hypothesis. Phonological short-term memory, morpho-syntactical language, and central executive processing (manipulating and switching) tasks were administered to four groups of 10-14 year old children (ADHD-only n = 20, dyslexia-only n = 20, ADHD+dyslexia n = 20, and controls n = 19). Comparisons of performance on these tasks were carried out

Selective modification of short-term hippocampal synaptic plasticity and impaired memory extinction in mice with a congenitally reduced hippocampal commissure.

The hippocampus is critical for forming new long-term memories, but the contributions of the hippocampal commissure (HC) to memory function and hippocampal synaptic plasticity are unclear. To shed light on this issue, we characterized behavioral memory and hippocampal synaptic plasticity in two inbred mouse strains. BALB/cWah1 mice display a range of corpus callosal defects and an intact HC, whereas 9XCA/Wah mice exhibit a complete absence of corpus callosum and a greatly reduced HC. No differences between strains were found in long-term potentiation (LTP) within two synaptic pathways in hippo

Linking the impact of aging on visual short-term memory capacity with changes in the structural connectivity of posterior thalamus to occipital cortices.

Aging impacts both visual short-term memory (vSTM) capacity and thalamo-cortical connectivity. According to the Neural Theory of Visual Attention, vSTM depends on the structural connectivity between posterior thalamus and visual occipital cortices (PT-OC). We tested whether aging modifies the association between vSTM capacity and PT-OC structural connectivity. To do so, 66 individuals aged 20-77 years were assessed by diffusion-weighted imaging used for probabilistic tractography and performed a psychophysical whole-report task of briefly presented letter arrays, from which vSTM capacity estim

How to get by with half a loop - An investigation of visual and auditory codes in a case of impaired phonological short-term memory (pSTM).

In the field of cognitive neuropsychology of phonological short-term memory (pSTM), a key debate surrounds the issue of how impairment on tasks deemed to tap this system imply a dissociable phonological input and output buffer system, with the implication that impairments can be fractionated across disruption to separate functional components (Nickels, Howard & Best, 1997). This study presents CT, a conduction aphasic who showed no impairment on basic auditory discrimination tasks, but had very poor nonword repetition. Clear-cut examples of such cases are very rare (see Jacquemot, Dupoux & Bac

Guanosine increases global SUMO1-ylation in the hippocampus of young and aged mice and improves the short-term memory of young mice.

The nucleoside guanosine is an endogenous neuromodulator associated with neuroprotection. The roles of guanosine during aging are still not fully elucidated. Guanosine modulates SUMOylation in neurons and astrocytes in vitro, but it is not known whether guanosine can modulate SUMOylation in vivo and improve cognitive functions during aging. SUMOylation is a post-translational protein modification with potential neuroprotective roles. In this follow-up study, we investigated whether guanosine could modulate SUMOylation in vivo and behavior in young and aged mice. Young (3-month-old) and aged (2

Short-term memory, attention, and temporal orientation as predictors of the cognitive impairment in older adults: A cross-sectional observational study.

Late-life cognitive decline ranges from the mildest cases of normal, age-related change to mild cognitive impairment to severe cases of dementia. Dementia is the largest global burden for the 21st century welfare and healthcare systems. The aim of this study was to analyze the neuropsychological constructs (temporal orientation (TO), spatial orientation (SO), fixation memory (FM), attention (A), calculation (C), short-term memory (STM), language (L), and praxis (P)), semantic fluency, level of functionality, and mood that reveal the greatest deficit in the different stages ranging from normal

Latent toxoplasmosis impairs learning and memory yet strengthens short-term and long-term hippocampal synaptic plasticity at perforant pathway-dentate gyrus, and Schaffer collatterals-CA1 synapses.

Investigating long-term potentiation (LTP) in disease models provides essential mechanistic insight into synaptic dysfunction and relevant behavioral changes in many neuropsychiatric and neurological diseases. Toxoplasma (T) gondii is an intracellular parasite causing bizarre changes in host's mind including losing inherent fear of life-threatening situations. We examined hippocampal-dependent behavior as well as in vivo short- and long-term synaptic plasticity (STP and LTP) in rats with latent toxoplasmosis. Rats were infected by T. gondii cysts. Existence of REP-529 genomic sequence of the p

Protective long-term antibody memory by antigen-driven and T help-dependent differentiation of long-lived memory B cells to short-lived plasma cells independent of secondary lymphoid organs.

Memory is a hallmark of immunity. Memory carried by antibodies is largely responsible for protection against reinfection with most known acutely lethal infectious agents and is the basis for most clinically successful vaccines. However, the nature of long-term B cell and antibody memory is still unclear. B cell memory was studied here after infection of mice with the rabies-like cytopathic vesicular stomatitis virus, the noncytopathic lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (Armstrong and WE), and after immunization with various inert viral antigens inducing naive B cells to differentiate either to

Long Short-Term Memory Network for Contralateral Knee Angle Estimation During Level-Ground Walking: A Feasibility Study on Able-Bodied Subjects.

Recent reports have revealed that the number of lower limb amputees worldwide has increased as a result of war, accidents, and vascular diseases and that transfemoral amputation accounts for 39% of cases, highlighting the need to develop an improved functional prosthetic knee joint that improves the amputee's ability to resume activities of daily living. To enable transfemoral prosthesis users to walk on level ground, accurate prediction of the intended knee joint angle is critical for transfemoral prosthesis control. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to develop a technique for estim

Evaluating Phonological Short-Term Memory in Children with SLI: A Comparative Analysis of Serial Order, Item Information and Nonword Repetition Tasks.

Nonword repetition (NWR) and related verbal short-term memory (STM) tasks are widely used to characterise cognitive deficits in children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). However, growing evidence suggests that performance on these tasks reflects not only memory processes but also the contribution of linguistic representations, raising questions about their interpretation as measures of phonological STM. The present study examined STM performance in Cantonese-speaking children with SLI (n = 18) and age-matched typically developing peers (n = 18) using three tasks: nonword repetition, se

Macroeconomic-aware forecasting of construction costs in developing countries: Using gated recurrent unit and long short-term memory deep learning framework.

Cost overruns are common on long-term construction projects. This is mostly because of inaccurate early estimates and unexpected changes in the economy and finances. In Egypt, the costs of materials like steel, cement, bricks, sand, and aggregates make up a large part of the cost of building. These costs are greatly affected by the state of the economy and the financial markets. Even though the Construction Cost Index (CCI) is a widely used economic indicator around the world, Egypt has not yet made its own CCI official. This study creates a predictive model just for Egypt's construction indus

Automated detection of arrhythmia from electrocardiogram signal based on new convolutional encoded features with bidirectional long short-term memory network classifier.

Early detection of cardiac arrhythmia is needed to reduce mortality. Automatically detecting the cardiac arrhythmias is a very challenging task. In this paper, a new deep convolutional encoded feature (CEF) based on non-linear compression composition is applied to diminish the ECG signal segment size. Bidirectional long short-term memory (BLSTM) network classifier has been proposed to detect arrhythmias from the ECG signal, which is encoded by the convolutional encoder. These encoded features are used as the input to BLSTM network classifier. For performance comparison, three other classifiers
