BACKGROUND: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is characterized by the deposition of β-amyloid (Aβ) in leptomeningeal vessels and penetrating arterioles. Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is one of the most destructive complications in CAA. Young plasma has been shown to improve cognitive, learning, and memory functions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) model mice and is a new potential therapy. However, it is not clear whether young plasma can reduce cerebral hemorrhage and improve the prognosis of neurological function in APP/PS1 (which express APP695swe and PS1-dE9 mutations) mice with CAA disease.

We characterized alterations in the ability of concussive brain injury (CBI) models to perform a water-finding task and examined effects of (+)-eburnamenine-14-carboxylic acid (2-nitroxyethyl) ester (VA-045), a novel apovincaminic acid derivative, on post-traumatic impairments in latent learning and memory processes. Two types of CBI-induced amnesia (retrograde and anterograde) were produced by means of post- or preacquisition head impact using a simple weight-drop device. Profound impairments of latent learning and memory processes related to retention and retrieval were observed in the CBI m

OBJECTIVE: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterised by progressive impairment in visuospatial and perceptual function. Recent findings show that memory functioning can also be compromised early in the course of disease. In this study, we investigated the neural basis of memory impairment in PCA, and hypothesised that correlations would be observed with parietal cortex rather than classic medial temporal memory structures.
METHODS: Eighteen PCA patients, 15 typical Alzheimer's disease (tAD) patients and 21 healthy controls underwent memory testing with the

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by a loss of dopaminergic projections to the striatum, leading to both motor and cognitive impairments. The cognitive impairments are relatively selective and include deficits in incremental learning from trial-by-trial feedback, while other forms of learning, such as hippocampal-dependent episodic memory, remain intact. Interestingly, it has been suggested that the striatum and the hippocampus compete during learning, leading to the intriguing prediction that the striatal disruption in PD could lead to enhanced performance on tasks that depend on the

Learning how actions change the environment is crucial for goal-directed actions and skill acquisition. Here, we applied a process dissociation approach to investigate the contribution of explicit and implicit memory to the learning of action-effect relations across four experiments. Participants produced object images by pressing one of two keys, with each action-effect episode experienced three times. Learning was either incidental (Experiments 1-2) or intentional (Experiments 2-4) and occurred under full (Experiments 1-4) or divided (Experiments 3-4) attention. In a test phase, participants

Classic taxonomies of memory distinguish explicit and implicit memory systems, placing motor skills squarely in the latter branch. This assertion is in part a consequence of foundational discoveries showing significant motor learning in amnesics. Those findings suggest that declarative memory processes in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) do not contribute to motor learning. Here, we revisit this issue, testing an individual (L. S. J.) with severe MTL damage on four motor learning tasks and comparing her performance to age-matched controls. Consistent with previous findings in amnesics, we observ

Accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) refers to a slowly developing anterograde amnesia in which material is retained normally over short delays but then forgotten at an abnormally fast rate over days to weeks. Such long-term memory impairment is not detected by standard clinical tests. This study analysed ALF in a temporal lobe epileptic, RY. Key issues addressed were: (i) the timeframe of ALF onset; (ii) whether disruption of memory consolidation during sleep is a necessary requirement for precipitating ALF; (iii) the effectiveness of repeated recall in limiting the impact of ALF. RY's memo

The present research was concerned with anterograde and retrograde memory for a socially transmitted food preference in rats with lesions to the dorsal hippocampus or dorsomedial thalamus, and operated controls. In Expt. 1, food-preference training was administered postoperatively and memory was tested following various delays. Both lesioned groups acquired the preference normally, but rats with hippocampal lesions displayed a rapid rate of forgetting that indicated significant anterograde amnesia. In Expt. 2, the food preference was acquired at different times preoperatively and retrograde me

Recent investigations of accelerated long-term forgetting, a condition in which newly acquired memory is normal initially but decays rapidly over days or weeks, indicate that multiple factors might influence whether this phenomenon is seen in patients with epilepsy. Test-based differences such as learning condition or type of memory measure (e.g., recall vs recognition) as well as epilepsy variables (e.g., side, site, or frequency of epileptiform activity) may be important. The present study sought to characterize factors affecting learning and memory for prose passages in patients with focal

Although botulinum toxin is thought not to affect the human CNS, previous studies have not examined those behaviors, such as memory, that have been shown to be dependent on central acetylcholine transmission. In eight patients with type A botulism, subjective analysis, bedside memory testing, and formal memory testing with Hebb's verbal sequencing test, Corsi's nonverbal sequencing test, and Buschke's verbal serial list learning test failed to demonstrate impairment in immediate and recent memory. Botulism severe enough to block peripheral nicotinic and muscarinic cholinergic transmission does

Encoding information in reference to the self leads to improved memory, a phenomenon termed the self-reference effect. Learning vocabulary in a foreign language (L2) is a challenging memory task, because learning thousands of words is necessary to achieve listening and reading comprehension. The current study examined the efficacy of self-reference encoding for L2 vocabulary learning. In Experiment 1, native Hebrew speakers learned rare English words with a self-reference task and a control condition of translation repetition. In Experiment 2, participants learned with the same self-reference

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has suggested associations between memory performance, white matter characteristics, and training in music performance. Associations of memory performance and white matter characteristics have also been found with language learning. Given the proposed links between music training and language learning, we investigate here, whether a year of different types of training (music, language, both, or other), related to white matter characteristics in the corpus callosum and the fornix and verbal and visuospatial memory performance changes.
METHODS: We obtained verbal

Each year in the US, ∼1.5 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Victims of TBI can suffer from chronic post-TBI symptoms, such as sensory and motor deficits, cognitive impairments including problems with memory, learning, and attention, and neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety, irritability, aggression, and suicidal rumination. Although partially associated with the site and severity of injury, the biological mechanisms associated with many of these symptoms - and why some patients experience differing assortments of persistent maladies - are largely unknown.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a progressive, systemic disease which leads to the development of end-stage liver disease. In 70% of patients, HCV infection is followed by the development of extrahepatic manifestations (EHM). A common EHM is HCV associated neurocognitive disorder (HCV-AND), characterized by neuropsychological changes in attention, working memory, psychomotor speed, executive function, verbal learning, and recall. The aim of this study is to examine the correlation between the neurocognitive profile and routine, available laboratory parameters of inflammation, liver functi

Present study investigated possible differences in the learning and memory of declarative memory task in rats selected according to the differences in immobilization response that is in high immobilization "depressive" and low immobilization "non-depressive" rats. Understanding the character of learning and memory disturbances in basal conditions of animal models of depression is still very topical for more intimate definition of the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder and appropriate searching the ways of its correction. Experiments were carried out on the adult white wild rats (with

AIM: To investigate the mechanism through which insulin affect the learning and memory abilities of the Alzheimer's disease-like rats.
METHODS: Okadaic acid (OA) was injected into the CA1 region of the rat hippocampus and the insulin was injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle of the rats. The learning and memory abilities of the rats were assessed through Morriswater maze behavioral test, and the expressions of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and GFAP were observed by Westem blotting and immunohistochemistry, respectively.
RESULTS: Compared with the control rats, the abilities of lea

Amnesia is one of the most discussed properties of the benzodiazepine class of drugs. The effects of benzodiazepines on human memory are usually anterograde, while changes in retrograde memory functions were seldom reported. Such inconsistent findings have prompted numerous animal studies investigating the influences of these positive modulators of inhibitory neurotransmission on different stages of memory. Among the benzodiazepines, memory effects of midazolam are of special interest due to its many and varied clinical applications. The present Morris water maze study in adult male Wistar rat

OBJECTIVES: Status epilepticus (SE) is considered a risk for cognitive impairment. Studies have indicated that SE cause more cognitive decline than multiple lifetime generalized tonic clonic (GTC) seizures. The aim of the study was to investigate whether patients suffering from SE or from multiple lifetime GTC seizures have cognitive dysfunction, and if the disabilities differ between these groups.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients suffering from SE were evaluated shortly after the clinical post-ictal phase and again after one year. Their follow-up results were compared to results from patients

This study examined the role of domain-specific working memory and emotion regulation in the relation between mathematics anxiety and mathematics performance among 264 upper elementary students (Grades 3-5). Participants completed measures of mathematics testing and learning anxiety, verbal and numerical working memory, cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, general anxiety, mathematics self-efficacy, and calculation. Results showed that verbal working memory, but not numerical working memory, mediated the relation between mathematics testing anxiety and calculation. Higher verbal work

Cognitive impairment is a core feature of psychosis spectrum disorders. Antipsychotics have at best small positive effects on cognitive performance. There is a lack of knowledge regarding the effects of antidepressants on cognitive functioning in these disorders. In the present study cognitive performance was investigated in relation to serum levels of antidepressants in persons with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Serum concentrations of escitalopram, citalopram and venlafaxine plus O-desmethylvenlafaxine were measured in a total of 187 participants with bipolar disorder (N=74) or schizop
