Inflammatory mechanisms of menstrual cycle changes following COVID-19 vaccination in adolescents.

PURPOSE: Changes in menstrual cycle characteristics following COVID-19 vaccination have been reported in women and adolescent girls, yet the biological mechanisms underlying these changes remain poorly understood. Inflammation, though frequently hypothesized as a possible mechanism underlying this finding, has yet to be explicitly studied. Thus, the present study examined the relationships of ovarian hormones and inflammatory processes pre- and post-COVID-19 booster vaccination to menstrual changes among adolescent girls. METHODS: 47 adolescent girls aged 13-20 who received a COVID-19 booster

The effect of menstrual cycle timing on female elbow flexion force steadiness.

This study examined female elbow flexion force steadiness (n = 12) across menses, late follicular, and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. To control for repeated testing effects unrelated to menstrual phase a male comparison group (n = 12) completed the same protocol over three equally spaced sessions as females. Maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and force steadiness were assessed in neutral and pronated positions. Elbow flexion force tasks were performed at 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% MVC, and steadiness quantified as the coefficient of variation of force (CV force). Males were stronge

Two case reports of coronary spastic angina accompanied by the menstrual cycle.

BACKGROUND: Coronary spastic angina (CSA) in premenopausal women is not frequent but has also been suggested to be associated with oestrogen decline during the menstrual cycle and sometimes becomes refractory and difficult to control. We experienced two premenopausal women with CSA that showed the involvement of the menstrual cycle. CASE SUMMARY: Case 1: 41-year-old-woman had ST-segment elevation and chest pain during urosepsis, just 2 days after the onset of menstruation. The acetylcholine stress test was performed according to the menstrual cycle, and multiple coronary spasms were induced.

Menstrual cycle influences on cue-induced smoking cravings and heart rate variability.

Women experience greater difficulties in quitting smoking than men, though the hormonal factors contributing to this sex difference remain to be clarified. The current study aimed to examine menstrual cycle effects on smoking cue-induced cravings as well as examine dynamic reproductive hormone change as a potential mediator underlying any cycle effects observed. Twenty-one women who smoke underwent two laboratory sessions - one in the mid-follicular phase and the other in the late luteal phase - involving an in-vivo smoking cue task, administered before and after exposure to a psychosocial lab

Oral contraceptive use and menstrual cycle influence acute cerebrovascular response to standing.

PURPOSE: To determine if the menstrual cycle and oral contraceptives (OC) influence responses to acute orthostatic stress and if these factors are clinically relevant to the diagnosis of initial orthostatic hypotension (iOH). METHODS: Young, healthy women were recruited, including OC users (n = 12) and non-users (NOC; n = 9). Women were tested during the low hormone (LH; placebo pills; days 2-5 natural cycle) and high hormone (HH; active dose; days 18-24 natural cycle) menstrual phases. Changes in mean arterial pressure, cardiac output, heart rate, the 30:15 heart rate ratio and cerebrovascul

Menstrual Cycle Changes Joint Laxity in Females-Differences between Eumenorrhea and Oligomenorrhea.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in anterior knee laxity (AKL), stiffness, general joint laxity (GJL), and genu recurvatum (GR) during the menstrual cycle in female non-athletes and female athletes with normal and irregular menstrual cycles. Participants were 19 female non-athletes (eumenorrhea, n = 11; oligomenorrhea, n = 8) and 15 female athletes (eumenorrhea, n = 8; oligomenorrhea, n = 7). AKL was measured as the amount of anterior tibial displacement at 67 N-133 N. Stiffness was calculated as change in (Δ)force/Δ anterior displacement. The Beighton method was used t

Body Composition Over the Menstrual and Oral Contraceptive Cycle in Trained Females.

PURPOSE: The influence of female sex hormones on body fluid regulation and metabolism homeostasis has been widely studied. However, it remains unclear whether hormone fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle (MC) and with oral contraceptive (OC) use affect body composition (BC). Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate BC over the MC and OC cycle in well-trained females. METHODS: A total of 52 eumenorrheic and 33 monophasic OC-taking well-trained females participated in this study. Several BC variables were measured through bioelectrical impedance analysis 3 times in the eumenorrheic

The progesterone level, leukocyte count and disgust sensitivity across the menstrual cycle.

According to the compensatory prophylaxis hypothesis, women in the luteal phase, characterized by a high progesterone level, which suppresses various mechanisms of immune response, should exhibit higher disgust sensitivity, compared to the follicular phase. In this study we test the hypothesis on the compensatory role of disgust sensitivity at the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, when immune functions are expected to change due to a rise in progesterone level. Disgust sensitivity, progesterone level (P) and white blood cell count (WBC), a general marker of immunocompetence, were measured i

Stability of proposed biomarkers of prenatal androgen exposure over the menstrual cycle.

The prenatal hormonal milieu is widely believed to shape health later in life; however, there are considerable methodological challenges associated with measuring the in utero hormonal environment. Two potential biomarkers of prenatal androgen exposure that can be measured postnatally have been proposed: anogenital distance (AGD) and the ratio of the second to fourth digits of the hand (2D:4D). Although both measures are widely used research tools, their use in adult women may be complicated by the dramatic fluctuations in reproductive hormones across the menstrual cycle. To determine whether

Menstrual cycle phase and duration of oral contraception intake affect olfactory perception.

Although a significant impact of cycle phase on olfactory thresholds has been shown in females, limited data exist regarding discrimination and identification. Therefore, we investigated a broader range of olfactory performance and analyzed the impact of cycle phase and oral contraception. We measured 80 healthy Caucasians, including 20 females taking oral contraceptives and 40 females without oral contraception who were further divided into follicular and luteal phase. Olfactory performance of all participants was assessed twice using the "Sniffin' Sticks" battery and intensity and pleasantne

Effects of menstrual cycle phase on cocaine self-administration in rhesus macaques.

Epidemiological findings suggest that men and women vary in their pattern of cocaine use resulting in differences in cocaine dependence and relapse rates. Preclinical laboratory studies have demonstrated that female rodents are indeed more sensitive to cocaine's reinforcing effects than males, with estrous cycle stage as a key determinant of this effect. The current study sought to extend these findings to normally cycling female rhesus macaques, a species that shares a nearly identical menstrual cycle to humans. Dose-dependent intravenous cocaine self-administration (0.0125, 0.0250, and 0.050

Menstrual cycle and oral contraceptives' effects on growth hormone response to sprinting.

The present study examined the impact of the menstrual cycle and oral contraceptive (OC) use on the growth hormone response to non-motorized treadmill sprinting. Nine monophasic OC users (21.5 ± 4.7 years old), and 8 normally menstruating women (NM; 21.4 ± 2.9 years old) participated in the study. Each participant completed 2 main trials, each consisting of an all-out 30-s treadmill sprint. The NM group performed one trial in the midfollicular phase (NM follicular) and one in the midluteal phase (NM luteal); the OC group's trials occurred one week into the start of the pill-taking cycle and on

Hormones and dichotic listening: evidence from the study of menstrual cycle effects.

This report presents evidence for changes in dichotic listening asymmetries across the menstrual cycle, which replicate studies from our laboratory and others. Increases in the right ear advantage (REA) were present in women at phases of the menstrual cycle associated with higher levels of ovarian hormones. The data also revealed correlations between hormone levels and behavioural measures of asymmetry. For example, the pre-ovulatory surge in luteinising hormone (LH) was related to a decrease in left ear scores, which comprised a key part of the cycle related shift in asymmetry. Further analys
