Infections caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies avium, hominissuis, and paratuberculosis in free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus) in Austria, 2001-2004.

Between 2001 and 2004, 14 Austrian free-ranging red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus) infected by Mycobacterium avium species were observed. Eight of the cases were from different geographical regions, and six originated from the same hunting area. The affected animals had signs of diarrhea, severe weight loss, and emaciation. On post-mortem examination, lymphadenitis associated with grossly enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes as well as multiple caseous or purulent nodular lesions in the thickened wall of the intestines were present in all animals. In 10 cases M. avium subsp. avium and in four ca

Mycobacterial infections and recurrent osteomyelitis in a patient with an autosomal dominant mutation in IFN-gamma receptor 1 with overexpression of the receptor.

Mutations in genes controlling IFN-γ production or signaling underlie Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease (MSMD) and predispose affected individuals to mycobacterial and other infections. Autosomal dominant (AD) mutations in exon VI of IFNGR1, which encodes interferon-γ receptor 1 (IFN-γR1), have been associated with multifocal osteomyelitis. We report a Mexican male patient whose clinical course began with severe BCGitis at 2 years of age, followed by tuberculous lymphadenitis at age 3, disseminated tuberculosis with hepatitis at age 10, and disseminated Mycobacterium bovis infe

A role for natural killer cells in intestinal inflammation caused by infection with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium.

Acute gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella infection is a significant public health problem. Using a mouse model of this condition, the authors demonstrated previously that the cytokine gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) is required for a normal intestinal inflammatory response to the pathogen. In the present study, these experiments are extended to show that natural killer (NK) cells constitute an early source of intestinal IFN-gamma during Salmonella infection, and that these cells have a significant impact on intestinal inflammation. It was found that infection of mice with Salmonella increased b

Pelvic lipomatosis-A silent intruder in the pelvis: Clinical insights from a case report and literature analysis.

RATIONALE: This study aims to highlight the diagnostic challenges and multidisciplinary management of pelvic lipomatosis (PL), emphasizing imaging's pivotal role and the need for early intervention to mitigate long-term morbidity. With fewer than 200 reported cases, PL remains underrecognized; this case underscores its potential to mimic common gastrointestinal/urinary disorders, advocating for heightened clinical suspicion. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 42-year-old male presented with a 2-day history of colicky abdominal pain under the xiphoid process, ac companied by nausea, vomiting, and watery stoo

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder in an 11-year-old: a case report in a pediatric patient from Nepal.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an auto-immune inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system mediated by auto-antibodies against Aquaporin-4 (AQP4). It causes vision impairment, vomiting, and paralysis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an 11-year-old Nepalese girl who initially presented with persistent vomiting for 2 months, followed by progressive limb weakness and facial asymmetry. She was initially misdiagnosed as gastroduodenitis with mesenteric lymphadenitis and later with major depressive illness and dissociative motor disorder

Severe acute intra-abdominal clostridial disease in two cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: This case series describes two cats that developed intra-abdominal infections attributable to clostridial species. Case 1 describes a 3-year-old Oriental Shorthair that presented after acutely vomiting and rapidly declined, culminating in septic shock and death within hours of presentation. Imaging and post mortem revealed severe necrotising inflammation involving the right kidney and septic peritonitis. Histopathology revealed Gram-positive bacilli, consistent with a clostridial infection. Case 2, a 6-year-old Siamese, presented with acute lethargy, anorexia and abdominal

Acute kidney injury associated with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection: Forgotten but not gone.

BACKGROUND: Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is known to cause fever, gastroenteritis, or acute kidney injury (AKI). There have been several Y. pseudotuberculosis infection outbreaks to date associated with ingestion of contaminated food or unsterile water. While this disease was considered to have practically been eradicated with the improvement in public health, we encountered several cases of AKI associated with Yersinia infection. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from medical records of patients with suspected Y. pseudotuberculosis infection who visited Seoul National University Chil

Two cases of disseminated Mycobacterium avium infection associated with a new immunodeficiency syndrome related to CXCR4 dysfunctions.

Disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection is a rare but severe disease mostly seen in patients with AIDS. It has been previously described in patients suffering from other kinds of immunodeficiency (e.g. primary immunodeficiency diseases in children or hairy cell leukaemia). We report two cases of disseminated MAC disease in young women with extended granulomatosis that revealed a new form of severe immunodeficiency syndrome. Both clinical observations initially appeared to be very similar to WHIM syndrome (Warts, Hypogammaglobulinemia, Infection, Myelokathexis), a rare immunode

Mesenteric adenitis: CT diagnosis of primary versus secondary causes, incidence, and clinical significance in pediatric and adult patients.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the clinical significance of mesenteric adentitis when detected on CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mesenteric adenitis was considered present if a cluster of three or more lymph nodes measuring 5 mm or greater each was present in the right lower quadrant mesentery. If no other abnormality was detected on CT, then mesenteric adenitis was considered primary. If a specific inflammatory process was detected in addition to the lymphadenopathy, then mesenteric adenitis was considered secondary. Patients with a known neoplasm or HIV infection were excluded. Expression of regulatory T cells in jejunum, colon, and cervical and mesenteric lymph nodes of dogs naturally infected with Leishmania infantum.

Using flow cytometry, we evaluated the frequencies of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells and Foxp3(+) regulatory T cells (Tregs) in mononuclear cells in the jejunum, colon, and cervical and mesenteric lymph nodes of dogs naturally infected with Leishmania infantum and in uninfected controls. All infected dogs showed chronic lymphadenitis and enteritis. Despite persistent parasite loads, no erosion or ulcers were evident in the epithelial mucosa. The colon harbored more parasites than the jejunum. Frequencies of total CD4(+), total Foxp3, and CD4(+) Foxp3(+) cells were higher in the jejunum than in the

Necrotoxigenic Escherichia coli type-2 invade and cause diarrhoea during experimental infection in colostrum-restricted newborn calves.

There exists experimental evidence that necrotoxigenic Escherichia coli (NTEC) strains producing the cytotoxic necrotising factor 1 cause intestinal and extra-intestinal disease in piglets. On the other hand, no experimental model has been developed with NTEC strains producing the cytotoxic necrotising factor 2. In all, 14 colostrum-restricted calves were orally challenged with two strains isolated from the faeces of a diarrheic calf (B20a) or from the heart blood of a septicaemic calf (1404). All calves had diarrhoea which lasted until euthanasia in eight of them. In those calves, diarrhoea w

Experimental Klebsiella and Salmonella infection in neonatal swine.

Twenty colostrum-fed piglets from three sows were separated from the sows 24 hours after birth and were randomly divided into five groups of four piglets each. Every piglet in each of four test groups was orally inoculated with about 10(10) colony forming units of Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella choleraesuis var Kunzendorf or one of two isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae. One group served as uninoculated controls. Piglets infected with K. pneumoniae developed severe diarrhea beginning about 12 hours after inoculation. They became dehydrated and weak but continued to drink. There were no morp
