Phase-Inversion Engineering of Covalent Organic Framework Microspheres for Advanced Water Purification.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous, crystalline polymers with broad application prospects. However, their microcrystalline powder morphology severely limits their practical implementation. Herein, a general phase-inversion spherical shaping strategy is reported, enabling the conversion of powdered COFs into robust microspheres with a radially hierarchical pore structure. This method is mild and scalable and has been validated across eight COFs with distinct topologies. The resulting microspheres retain approximately 90% of the intrinsic adsorption capacity of the pristine materials.

Self-expanding sodium alginate sulfate drug-loaded microspheres for stabilized arterial embolization.

Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is an important treatment method for solid tumors, such as liver cancer. Its main advantages are precise treatment and reduced trauma. However, limitations including inadequate drug loading, burst release and ectopic embolization still exist in clinical practice. In this study, we developed sodium alginate sulfate microspheres (AM) with multiple types of drug-loading groups and self-expanding behavior, achieving superior drug loading capacity and embolization stability. The framework material sodium alginate sulfate (SAS) contains various drug-loading gro

Acoustic Microreactor-Enabled Controllable Production of Porous Microspheres toward Efficient Confined Catalysis.

Porous microspheres with well-defined size and tailored morphology have garnered significant attention in the catalytic field due to their unique properties. However, the size, pore distribution, and morphology of these microspheres are difficult to control in traditional batch reactors. Herein, an efficient microfluidic strategy was proposed to produce porous polystyrene (PPS) microspheres, in which the PPS microspheres with adjustable pore size and controllable morphology were fabricated in a flower-like acoustic microreactor by readily altering the operating conditions. The effects of flow

Encapsulating TiO2 Nanoparticles in Chitosan-Based Porous Microspheres as Multifunctional UV Filters.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are widely used as inorganic UV filters, yet their photocatalytic activity and resulting phototoxicity raise serious safety issues. Here, we report a Pickering double emulsion templating strategy for constructing chitosan-based porous microspheres encapsulating TiO2 NPs (TiO2@CS-PMs), with controllable microstructures and mass loading of TiO2 NPs. The oil-in-water-in-oil double emulsion template confines TiO2 NPs within a cross-linked porous polymer skeleton. Structural confinement, combined with the antioxidant capacity of chitosan (CS), greatly reduc

Collagen-Based Microspheres for Biomedical Applications in Drug Delivery and Tissue Engineering.

Collagen, the most abundant extracellular matrix (ECM) protein, has emerged as a cornerstone biomaterial in drug delivery and regenerative medicine due to its intrinsic biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. Engineering collagen into microspheres transforms its functionality beyond bulk scaffolds by increasing surface area, enabling minimally invasive delivery, and providing precise control over degradation, mechanical properties, and therapeutic release. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of collagen-based microspheres, with a particular focus on their dual rol

Synthesis, characterization and properties of magnetic microspheres for fish environmental DNA monitoring.

In the context of Aquatic ecological conservation policies in China, such as the Yangtze River fishing ban, traditional net-based fish monitoring methods have become restricted in major water bodies like the Yangtze River. Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, owing to its non-invasive nature and operational simplicity, has gradually been applied to fish monitoring. However, current eDNA analysis still suffers from inefficiencies in nucleic acid purification and separation, which may lead to the loss of some valuable biological information. To address this issue, this study prepared Fe3O4-SiO2-PM

Engineering microspheres for breast cancer: integrating tumor modeling, diagnostics, and targeted treatment.

BACKGROUND: Microsphere-based technologies have increasingly gained attention as adaptable and multifunctional tools in breast cancer research and clinical care. Traditional approaches, including two‑dimensional cell cultures, systemic drug delivery, and broad diagnostic methods, often fail to accurately mimic tumor behavior or deliver therapeutics efficiently. Microspheres, with their customizable size, composition, mechanical characteristics, and surface chemistry, offer a platform that can overcome many of these limitations. Their ability to modulate cell–material interactions and control l

Restoring cartilage-subchondral bone metabolism with biphasic magnesium microspheres ameliorate early osteoarthritis.

The spatiotemporal histopathological features of articular cartilage in osteoarthritis (OA) remain inadequately characterized, which impedes the advancement of strategies to halt irreversible joint deterioration. Herein a murine OA model, the initial phase (<10 days post-surgery) is characterized by pronounced mitochondrial dysfunction in chondrocytes and concurrent activation of subchondral osteoclasts. Beyond this period, irreversible cartilage degeneration ensues, marked by chondrocyte apoptosis and subchondral bone sclerosis. We further identified magnesium (Mg) as a key regulator of cellu

Calcium-Specific-Binding PLGA Microspheres with Embedded BMP-2 for Bone Regeneration.

Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) is a potent osteoinductive factor for bone regeneration, but its rapid clearance and dose-dependent adverse effects limit its clinical use. This study developed calcium-binding poly(butyl methacrylate-co-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphate) (PBMP)-coated poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microparticles to enhance calcium-rich surface anchoring and enable sustained BMP-2 release. Microparticles were characterized for morphology, zeta potential, encapsulation efficiency, release kinetics, and hydroxyapatite (HA)-binding affinity, and were further evaluated for in

Enhancing Drug Efficacy: A Review of Research Progress in Drug-Loaded Microspheres.

The efficacy of drugs is intrinsically linked to their performance characteristics. For instance, natural plant extracts, being endogenous chemical constituents of plants, exhibit limited bioavailability and biological activity due to their poor water solubility. When utilized independently, maintaining the continuity of drug action poses a challenge, and the precise targeting of action sites is arduous. This is evident in applications such as inducing osteogenesis at orthopedic surgery sites, providing anti-inflammatory treatment for localized wounds, and enhancing healing processes. With adv

Fabrication of Dialkyl Dithiophosphate-Functionalized Carbon Aerogel Microspheres for Enhanced Lubrication Performance.

Herein, functionalized carbon aerogel microspheres (CAMs) were successfully prepared by the pyrolysis of resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) microspheres followed by surface modification. First, RF microspheres were carbonized to obtain CAMs. Afterward, the polyphenolic compound of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) was reacted with melamine to form a poly(EGCG) layer onto the CAM surface, followed by bonding the antiwear molecule dialkyl dithiophosphate (DDP) by the Michael addition, resulting in DDP-functionalized CAMs (DDP-CAMs). The grafting antiwear molecule DDP improved the lipophilicity of the CA

Effects of hollow glass microspheres on cold-water pelagic copepods and fish.

The highly reflective properties of hollow glass microspheres (HGM) have motivated their application as a reflective shield onto Arctic sea ice to increase albedo and reduce melting. However, to ensure safe application in the environment, their potential environmental impacts must be assessed. While most HGMs will be positively buoyant in seawater and thus remain in the upper part of the water column, small, cracked and broken HGMs will sink. In this study, we conducted a series of experiments to investigate interactions between HGMs and cold-water pelagic copepods (Calanus finmarchicus) and f

Injectable hydrogel microspheres delivering cartilage-targeted LGR5-engineered exosomes for osteoarthritis therapy.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disease characterized by cartilage destruction and impaired intrinsic repair capacity. Here, we developed a cartilage-targeted delivery system by engineering human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) to co-express LGR5 and a cartilage affinity peptide (CAP), generating LGR5-engineered CAP-exosomes (CAP/LGR5-EXO), which were subsequently encapsulated within hyaluronic acid methacrylate (HAMA) hydrogel microspheres to enhance intra-articular retention. In vitro, CAP/LGR5-EXO promoted chondrocyte proliferation, enhanced extracel

Development of Resorbable Phosphate-Based Glass Microspheres as MRI Contrast Media Agents.

In this research, resorbable phosphate-based glass (PBG) compositions were developed using varying modifier oxides including iron (Fe2O3), copper (CuO), and manganese (MnO2), and then processed via a rapid single-stage flame spheroidisation process to manufacture dense (i.e., solid) and highly porous microspheres. Solid (63-200 µm) and porous (100-200 µm) microspheres were produced and characterised via SEM, XRD, and EDX to investigate their surface topography, structural properties, and elemental distribution. Complementary NMR investigations revealed the formation of Q2, Q1, and Q0 phosphate

Bioactive microspheres to enhance sonodynamic-embolization-metalloimmune therapy for orthotopic liver cancer.

The development of novel microspheres for the combination of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) with transarterial embolization (TAE) therapy to amplify their efficacy has received increasing attention. Herein, a novel strategy for encapsulating sonosensitizers (e.g., oxygen-deficient manganese tungstate (MnWOX) nanodots) with gelatin microspheres was proposed. The obtained MnWOX-encapsulated microspheres (abbr. Mn-GMSs) facilitated efficient sonodynamic-embolization-metalloimmune therapy via the immune effects of metal ions on orthotopic liver cancer tumor after transarterial embolization (TAE). Due t

Incorporation of Finasteride-Loaded Microspheres into Personalized Microneedle for Sustained Transdermal Delivery.

Although finasteride (FNS) tablets are considered the most effective drug for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA), their clinical applications are limited due to the associated side effects including decreased libido, breast enlargement, and liver dysfunction. In this study, we have developed a personalized microneedle (PMN) with a double-layer structure that incorporates FNS-loaded microspheres (MPs) to accommodate irregular skin surfaces. This design enables the sustained release of FNS, thereby reducing potential side effects. The needle body was synthesized with high-strength hyal

Minocycline-loaded nHAP/PLGA microspheres for prevention of injury-related corneal angiogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Corneal neovascularization (CoNV) threatens vision by disrupting corneal avascularity, however, current treatments, including pharmacotherapy and surgery, are hindered by limitations in efficacy and adverse effects. Minocycline, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, could suppress CoNV but faces challenges in effective delivery due to the cornea's unique structure. Therefore, in this study a novel drug delivery system using minocycline-loaded nano-hydroxyapatite/poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (nHAP/PLGA) nanoparticles was developed to improve treatment outcomes for CoNV.
