A technique for quantitative evaluation of ectoparasitic mites and insects of domestic animals.

A modified KOH dissolution technique using Tween 80 has been developed for the diagnosis and quantitative evaluation of ectoparasitic mites and insects of veterinary importance. Fifty intact skin segments from ten different domestic animals were artificially inoculated in vitro with ten specimens each of the mites Sarcoptes scabiei, Chorioptes bovis, Psoroptes ovis and Demodex caprae and insects Haematopinus eurysternus and Bovicola bovis. Sixty-seven to 88% of the mites and 80-99% of the insects were recovered by this technique. Using this method, parasitic mites and insects were found and id

Host immune responses to the itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, in humans.

Scabies is a parasitic disease due to infestation of skin by the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies is a major public health problem and endemic in resource poor communities worldwide affecting over 100 million people. Associated bacterial infections cause substantial morbidity, and in severe cases can lead to renal and cardiac diseases. Mite infestation of the skin causes localised cutaneous inflammation, pruritus, skin lesions, and allergic and inflammatory responses are mounted by the host against the mite and its products. Our current understanding of the immune and inflammatory res

Efficacy of moxidectin against sarcoptic mange and effects on milk yield of ewes and growth of lambs.

Forty-eight dairy ewes and 45 lambs naturally infested with sarcoptic mange, were divided into three equal groups and treated with moxidectin 1% inj. sol. at a dose rate of 0.2 mg moxidectin kg(-1) bodyweight once or twice ten days apart. During the study, the skin lesions were scored and the number of mites recovered in facial skin scrapings from the animals were recorded. Moxidectin was found to be effective against ovine sarcoptic mange, when given twice; the percentage reduction of mites was 100% (p < 0.0001) and the skin lesions disappeared completely (p = 0.0001). In sheep treated once o

Prevalence of ectoparasites in intensive laying poultry farms in Thailand using the feather-picking and AviVet™ trapping methods.

Poultry production in Thailand has expanded considerably and industrially; however, ectoparasite infestations in poultry farms could still occur. Information on ectoparasite prevalence in intensive poultry farms in Thailand is limited. This study investigated the current distribution and diversity of ectoparasites in commercial layer farms in central Thailand using two sampling methods: feather-picking and AviVet™ trapping. A total of 1,006 samples (507 feather and 499 trap samples) were collected from 28 poultry houses in 10 intensive farms across five provinces. Samples were examined microsc

Ectoparasites of small-mammals: determinants of community structure in South American savannah.

This study aimed to assess the contribution of hosts characteristics (rodents and marsupials) in the organization of ectoparasite communities present in woodland patches in western central Brazil. We verified the effect of host species, sex, body mass and vertical strata in addition to the role of seasonality on the ectoparasite composition, richness and abundance. The total sampling effort was 22 032 trap-nights equally distributed in 54 woodland patches. Variance partition and principal coordinate analysis were used to verify the existence of significant relationships between response variab

Effective treatment with afoxolaner (NexGard) of Trixacarus caviae in a pet guinea pig.

Trixacarus caviae is a sarcoptic mange mite infesting guinea pigs. Infestation in immunosuppressed animals produces severe dermatological problems, including alopecia, intense pruritus, hyperkeratosis and non-dermatological issues (e.g., seizures). Treatment options are limited and include topical application of macrocyclic lactones or amitraz or injectable administration of ivermectin or doramectin. Considering the severity of the disease and the challenging treatment, the present paper aimed to determine the efficacy of oral afoxolaner in a severe case of infestation with T. caviae in a pet

Infestation by Pyemotes tritici (Acari, Pyemotidae) causes death of stingless bee colonies (Hymenoptera: Meliponina).

We report the infestation of stingless bee nests by the mite Pyemotes tritici, which killed four colonies of Tetragonisca angustula and one colony of Frieseomelitta varia in Brazil. The first infected colony, a colony of T. angustula, came from an area between Uberlândia and Araguari, Minas Gerais. The transfer of the mites to the other colonies occurred through the transfer of infected combs and subsequent manipulations. Other colonies in the same meliponary, which had not been manipulated, were not infected. The infestation was terminated by isolating the dead colonies from the meliponary.

Jasmonic acid catabolism in Arabidopsis defence against mites.

Jasmonates are essential modulators of plant defences but the role of JA-derivatives has been scarcely studied, particularly in the plant-pest interplay. To deepen into the JA catabolism and its impact on plant responses to spider mite infestation, we selected the Arabidopsis JAO2 gene as a key element involved in the first step of the JA-catabolic route. JAO2 is responsible for the hydroxylation of JA into 12-OH-JA, contributes to attenuate JA and JA-Ile content and consequently, determines the formation of other JA-catabolites. JAO2 was up-regulated in Arabidopsis by mite infestation. Mites

Sensitization of children in the Stockholm area to house dust mites.

Atopic sensitization of children in the Stockholm area to house dust mites (HDM) was investigated in a case-control study. Sixty children with and 60 without positive skin prick tests for HDM were matched for age and sex. HDM-sensitized children had previously more often lived in other areas known to be mite infested than the control children. Sensitization to mites was related to dampness in the homes, but no significant relationship was found to the type of residence, frequent visits to a summer house in the archipelago or parental smoking. Dust samples from mattresses of the children with t

Survival and infectivity of Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis and var. hominis.

Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis served as a suitable model for the study of S. scabiei var. hominis survival. S. scabiei var. canis and var. hominis mites were found to survive off the host for 24 to 36 hours at room conditions (21 degrees C and 40% to 80% relative humidity [RH]), and the canine variety survived 19 days at 10 degrees C and 97% RH. Female mites survived decidedly longer than male mites at comparable conditions. Generally, higher RH values and lower temperatures favored survival, whereas higher temperature and lower RH led to early death. Most canine scabies mites that were held of

Clinical characteristics of Demodex-associated recurrent hordeola: an observational, comparative study.

Our study evaluated the association between Demodex infestation and recurrent hordeola and examined the clinical features associated with these eyelid lesions. This was an observational, comparative study. We reviewed 250 patients and divided them into the recurrent hordeolum (n = 153) and control (n = 97) groups. Demodex infestation was detected by epilating eyelashes around the lesion/s and viewing them under a light microscope. Patient medical records and photographs were retrospectively analyzed to identify the clinical characteristics of Demodex-associated recurrent hordeola. Demodex was

Prevalence and epizootical aspects of varroasis in golestan province, northern iran.

BACKGROUND: The Varroa destructor mite is considered as a major pest of honey bees Apis mellifera. The rapid spread of Varroa mites among bee colonies may be due to several factors, including drifting of infested bees, movement of bee swarms, and robbing of weakened colonies. Disease spread and predisposing the infested bees to other diseases lead to high economic losses in beekeeping industries. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of and evaluate some managing factors in Golestan Province in Iran in 2008. METHODS: According to the records of Agricultural Research Center, 80

Mites associated with stored grain commodities in Benin, West Africa.

After insects, mites are the major arthropod pests that inhabit stored agricultural products worldwide. To determine the acarofauna that infests cowpea, maize, paddy rice and sorghum in Benin (West Africa), surveys were conducted in some principal markets (Dantokpa, Glazoue and Parakou) of this country. A total of 555 samples of grains and debris were collected in May and September 2011. More than 56 species belonging to 24 mite families were recorded in the four products. These mite species included predators, parasites, fungivorous, phytophagous and other groups whose feeding habits are not

Development and assessment of an epidemiologic dashboard for surveillance of Varroa destructor in Ontario apiaries.

Varroosis (caused by the Varroa destructor mite) is a key health issue for honey bees in North America. Because these mites can exist in reservoirs of feral honey bee colonies, eradication is impossible, and instead efforts are made to maintain mites below a critical threshold. Monitoring for Varroa mites within a population is key for allocating resources and targeting interventions but surveillance can be difficult and/or expensive. This project aims to reflect on the success of data dashboards developed throughout the 2019-coronavirus pandemic and showcase how these methods can improve surv
