Comprehensive evaluation of a deep learning-based synthetic CT model for MR-only radiotherapy across multiple anatomical sites.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: With advances in deep learning, MRI-only radiotherapy planning (MROP) has been increasingly adopted. However, clinical implementation still requires rigorous evaluation of synthetic CT (sCT) accuracy across multiple anatomical sites. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an all-sites deep learning model for generating sCT from MRI across the head and neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and spine, with comprehensive assessment of image similarity, dose/volume metric fidelity, and patient positioning accuracy. METHODS: A modified weakly-supervised learning model was trained

Development and validation of 3D-printed anatomically accurate liver model for endoscopic ultrasound-based endo-hepatology training (with video).

BACKGROUND: Ex vivo endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) training relies on animal tissue, which is anatomically variable, perishable, and requires dedicated endoscopes. As EUS-based liver assessment (EUS-LA)-including parenchymal imaging, shear-wave elastography (SWE), attenuation imaging, and EUS-guided liver biopsy (EUS-LB)-expands, an anatomically accurate, tissue-free training platform could be a valuable educational tool. We developed a synthetic training tool that integrated a gelatin liver and silicone foregut and assessed its validity. METHODS: CT data from a healthy female were extracted to

Biomechanical analysis using finite element analysis of orbital floor fractures reproduced in a realistic experimental environment with an anatomical model.

Introduction: In this study, we attempted to demonstrate the actual process of orbital floor fracture visually and computationally in anatomically reconstructed structures and to investigate them using finite element analysis. Methods: A finite element model of the skull and cervical vertebrae was reconstructed from computed tomography data, and an eyeball surrounded by extraocular adipose was modeled in the orbital cavity. Three-dimensional volume mesh was generated using 173,894 of the 4-node hexahedral solid elements. Results: For the cases where the impactor hit the infraorbital foramen, b

Inflammatory responses to Opisthorchis viverrini infection in animal models: A comparison between susceptible and nonsusceptible hosts in different anatomical locations.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation caused by Opisthorchis viverrini infection increases the risk of cholangitis, cholecystitis, and leads to bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma or CCA). However, only certain infected individuals are susceptible to CCA, suggesting the involvement of host factors in cancer development. In addition, there are reports indicating differences in the locations of CCA. AIM: This study aims to investigate cellular inflammatory responses in the common bile duct (CB), intrahepatic bile duct (IHB), and gallbladder (GB) in susceptible and non-susceptible hosts following O. viverri

TUSPM-NET: A multi-task model for thyroid ultrasound standard plane recognition and detection of key anatomical structures of the thyroid.

The thyroid gland is a vital gland located in the anterior part of the neck. Ultrasound imaging of the thyroid gland is a non-invasive and widely used technique for diagnosing nodular growth, inflammation, and enlargement of the thyroid gland. In ultrasonography, the acquisition of ultrasound standard planes is crucial for disease diagnosis. However, the acquisition of standard planes in ultrasound examinations can be subjective, laborious and heavily reliant on the sonographer's clinical experience. To overcome these challenges, we design a multi-task model TUSP Multi-task Network (TUSPM-NET)

Midface hypoplasia in syndromic craniosynostosis: predicting craniofacial growth via a novel regression model from anatomical morphometric analysis.

Midface hypoplasia in syndromic craniosynostosis (SC) may lead to serious respiratory issues. The aim of this study was to analyse the morphometric correlation between midface and cranial base parameters in paediatric SC patients in order to formulate predictive regression models. The computed tomography scans of 18 SC patients and 20 control were imported into Materialise Mimics Medical version 21.0 software for the measurement of multiple craniofacial landmarks and correlation analysis. The results showed a strong correlation of anterior cranial base (SN), posterior cranial base (SBa), and t

Creation of 3D anatomical models illustrating an intact and centrally torn triangular fibrocartilage complex for patient education prior treatment.

BACKGROUND: The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is a composite structure located in the human wrist and is made up from fibrocartilage and ligaments. It consists of eight distinct structures, with the ligamentous structures acting as the major stabilizer of the distal radioulnar joint and with the articular disc acting as a shock absorber at the ulnocarpal joint. The articular disc can be called the triangular fibrocartilage (TFC). Thus, traumatic injuries of the TFCC ligamentous structures cause instability of the joint and a centrally torn TFC disc causes ulnar sided wrist pain. TFC

Long-term Cost-Effectiveness of Diagnostic Tests for Assessing Stable Chest Pain: Modeled Analysis of Anatomical and Functional Strategies.

Several tests exist for diagnosing coronary artery disease, with varying accuracy and cost. We sought to provide cost-effectiveness information to aid physicians and decision-makers in selecting the most appropriate testing strategy. We used the state-transitions (Markov) model from the Brazilian public health system perspective with a lifetime horizon. Diagnostic strategies were based on exercise electrocardiography (Ex-ECG), stress echocardiography (ECHO), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), computed tomography coronary angiography (CTA), or stress cardiac magnetic resonance

Quantitative Analysis of Electro-Anatomical Maps: Application to an Experimental Model of Left Bundle Branch Block/Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy.

Electro-anatomical maps (EAMs) are commonly acquired in clinical routine for guiding ablation therapies. They provide voltage and activation time information on a 3-D anatomical mesh representation, making them useful for analyzing the electrical activation patterns in specific pathologies. However, the variability between the different acquisitions and anatomies hampers the comparison between different maps. This paper presents two contributions for the analysis of electrical patterns in EAM data from biventricular surfaces of cardiac chambers. The first contribution is an integrated automati

How mandibular and hyoid morphology alters tongue muscle architecture in healthy adults: An anatomical atlas and statistical shape model of the tongue.

The tongue is a muscular hydrostat whose complex fibre architecture enables its diverse functions in swallowing, speech, and breathing. Current understanding of the tongue's structure is largely based on ex vivo dissections, which are not directly linked to function. This study aimed to develop an anatomical atlas of the living human tongue incorporating detailed muscle architecture. The pharynx of 20 healthy volunteers (10 females) were imaged with 3T MRI, collecting mDIXON and diffusion-weighted images (DWI). Multichannel registration was used to align scans from individual participants into

Investigating the effect of anatomical variations in the response of the neonatal brachial plexus to applied force: Use of a two-dimensional finite element model.

The brachial plexus is a set of nerves that innervate the upper extremity and may become injured during the birthing process through an injury known as Neonatal Brachial Plexus Palsy. Studying the mechanisms of these injuries on infant cadavers is challenging due to the justifiable sensitivity surrounding testing. Thus, these specimens are generally unavailable to be used to investigate variations in brachial plexus injury mechanisms. Finite Element Models are an alternative way to investigate the response of the neonatal brachial plexus to loading. Finite Element Models allow a virtual repres

Quantification of anatomical aortic valve area by multi-detector computed tomography: A pilot 3D-morphological modeling of the stenotic aortic valve.

BACKGROUND: Aortic-valve-stenosis (AS) is a frequent degenerative valvular-disease and carries dismal outcome under-medical-treatment. Transvalvular pressure gradient reflects severity of the valve-disease but is highly dependent on flow-conditions and on other valvular/aortic characteristics. Alternatively, aortic-valve-area (AVA) represents a measure of aortic-valve lesion severity conceptually essential and practically widely-recognized but exhibits multiple-limitations. METHODS: We analyzed the 4D multi-detector computed tomography(MDCT) of 20 randomly selected patients with severe AS. Fo
