Nonverbal cognitive control training increases the efficiency of frontal-subcortical collaboration for bilingual language control.

Domain-general cognitive control is closely related to language control during bilingual language production. Previous neural imaging studies have revealed a highly overlapped but rewired brain network for language control and nonverbal cognitive control. In the present study, we examined this issue from a training perspective. Two groups of participants performed the language switching task at pre-and post-tests during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning. After the pre-test, the experimental group received 8-day training in a non-verbal switching task, while the control grou

Incorporating reading strategies for EFL undergraduate learners in Saudi Arabia: A think-aloud study.

BACKGROUND: In language learning, reading is a skill that enables interaction with a text in whatever field of knowledge the learner is pursuing. Readers tend to use strategies such as comprehension, interpretation and conception of decoding written language and texts to enhance their reading capacity. This research explores the reading strategies applied by Saudi English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and compares the reading abilities of male and female EFL students. METHODS: The study interviewed three EFL students about the reading strategies they applied while reading passages and

Using Nonword Repetition to Identify Developmental Language Disorder in Monolingual and Bilingual Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Purpose A wealth of studies has assessed the diagnostic value of the nonword repetition task (NWRT) for the detection of developmental language disorder (DLD) in the clinical context of speech and language therapy, first in monolingual children and, more recently, in bilingual children. This review article reviews this literature systematically and conducts a meta-analysis on the discriminative power of this type of task in both populations. Method Three databases were used to select articles based on keyword combinations, which were then reviewed for relevance and methodological rigor based o

Effects of Practice Variability on Second-Language Speech Production Training.

BACKGROUND: Mastering the phonetics of a second language (L2) involves a component of speech-motor skill, and it has been suggested that L2 learners aiming to achieve a more native-like pronunciation could benefit from practice structured in accordance with the principles of motor learning. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: This study investigated the influence one such principle, high versus low variability in practice, has on speech-motor learning for Korean adults seeking to acquire native-like production of English rhotics. Practice incorporated a commercially available intraoral placement device

"Did I Say Cherry?" Error Patterns on a Blocked Cyclic Naming Task for Bilingual Children With and Without Developmental Language Disorder.

Purpose Using a blocked cyclic picture-naming task, we compared accuracy and error patterns across languages for Spanish-English bilingual children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD). Method Pictured stimuli were manipulated for semantic similarity across two (Same and Mixed) category contexts. Children's productions were scored off-line for accuracy, error frequency, and error type. Results Typically developing children were more accurate and produced fewer errors than their peers with DLD; however, this was moderated by task language and semantic context. Children were ge

Applying cognitive neuropsychological principles to the rehabilitation of Spanish readers with acquired dyslexia.

Cognitive neuropsychological models (CNMs) have been useful to generate a theory of aphasia rehabilitation. In contrast to the traditional syndrome approach, CNMs employ cognitive accounts to interpret language disturbances after brain damage. In this article, we apply CNMs to monolingual Spanish and bilingual Spanish-English readers with acquired dyslexia whose first language is Spanish. Although there are many studies of acquired dyslexia (reading errors associated with aphasia), they primarily have focused on English and French readers. Similar investigations on Spanish readers are limited.

Effectiveness of Spanish intervention for first-grade English language learners at risk for reading difficulties.

The effectiveness of an explicit, systematic reading intervention for first-grade students whose home language was Spanish and who were at risk for reading difficulties was examined. Participants were 69 students in 20 classrooms in 7 schools from 3 districts who initially did not pass the screening in Spanish and were randomly assigned within schools to a treatment or comparison group; after 7 months, 64 students remained in the study. The intervention matched the language of instruction of their core reading program (Spanish). Treatment groups of 3 to 5 students met daily for 50 min and were

International variation in neuropsychological test use practices: Implications for test adaptation and fair assessment.

Neuropsychological test selection varies substantially across countries and languages, yet which instruments clinicians use internationally remains poorly documented. Using a survey of International Neuropsychological Society members (INSConnect, 2023), we examined instrument endorsement among 147 respondents across 30+ countries. English-language administrators endorsed more instruments per cognitive domain clinically than non-English administrators, particularly in memory, executive functioning, language, intelligence, and performance validity. Multilingual status showed little association w

What Hath Allah Wrought? The Global Invention of Prescriptive Machines for the Islamic Consumer, 1975-2010.

Unlike histories emphasizing conflicts between religion and technology, this article brings to light a series of religio-technological innovations. It analyzes a dataset of international patents inspired by the practice of Islam, from the first electronic Islamic wristwatch to "The Muslim Xbox." Starting in the 1970s with a few Euro-Muslim inventions, incremental innovations addressing the "needs" of devout Muslims grew exponentially over the course of three decades as inventors from the United States to China aimed to profit from an Islamic revival and emerging "Islamic market." These invento

Acquired dysgraphia in alphabetic and stenographic handwriting.

We report the unusual case of AZO, who professionally used handwritten shorthand writing, and became dysgraphic after a stroke. AZO suffered from a complex cognitive impairment, and part of her spelling errors resulted from damage to auditory input processing, to phonology-orthography conversion procedures and to the ortographic output lexicon. However, analysis of her writing performance showed that the same variables affected response accuracy in alphabetic and shorthand writing; and, that the same error types, including transpositions, were observed in all tasks in the two types of writing.

Building a system for training content development: Experiences from India's TB elimination programme.

BACKGROUND: India's National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP) operates at an unprecedented scale, requiring training across a large, heterogeneous workforce while continuously adapting to evolving guidelines, diagnostics, digital systems, and service delivery approaches. Historically, training content was fragmented, difficult to update, and insufficiently tailored to diverse cadres. In response, NTEP adopted a systems-thinking approach to redesign training as part of a broader programme ecosystem and developed a Modernized Training System (MTS). This paper describes the conceptualisation, desi

Impacts of language barriers on healthcare access and quality among Afaan Oromoo-speaking patients in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is a multilingual and multinational federation with Addis Ababa serving as both the capital city of Oromia regional state and the seat of the Ethiopian federal government. Nevertheless, only Amharic is considered as the working language of the city and federal offices, including hospitals. As a result, Afaan Oromoo-speaking patients may be facing language barriers in the healthcare settings in Addis Ababa. Language barriers have the capacity to affect patients' experience of care and treatment outcomes. This study, hence, examined the impacts of language barriers on the he

Enabling Quechua speech in humanoid social robots through fine-tuned neural TTS on the UBTech Walker Tienkung.

Humanoid social robots deployed in multilingual societies-particularly in indigenous communities-face a critical linguistic gap: their speech interfaces are predominantly designed for high-resource languages, excluding hundreds of millions of indigenous language speakers from equitable human-robot interaction. This study presents the first neural text-to-speech (TTS) system for Southern Quechua-the most extensive indigenous language family of the Americas, with more than ten million active speakers-deployed on a humanoid social robot. XTTS-v2, a multilingual neural TTS model, was fine-tuned on

Enhanced cortical tracking of unfamiliar languages in both monolinguals and bilinguals.

UNLABELLED: Humans routinely encounter speech in languages they have never heard, yet how the brain responds to such input and whether bilingual experience shapes this response remains unknown. Here, we used electroencephalography (EEG) and temporal response function (TRF) modeling to examine cortical tracking of the speech envelope in 24 English-monolingual and 24 English-Mandarin bilingual adults. Participants listened to naturally produced continuous speech in three languages: English (familiar to all), Mandarin (familiar to bilinguals only), and Vietnamese (unfamiliar to all). We report tw

Co-Producing and Evaluating a Culturally Inclusive Dementia Education Initiative: A Multimethod Study Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Limited dementia awareness among culturally and linguistically diverse communities can exacerbate stigma and hinder support for carers and people at risk of or living with dementia. Co-producing a culturally inclusive dementia education intervention with representative stakeholders can address these knowledge and service gaps. This paper details the protocol for designing and evaluating a co-produced multilingual dementia education intervention named Dementia Friends Unite. This project aims to improve dementia knowledge, attitudes and supportive practices in a multicultural cont

Ethical principles, challenges and opportunities when conducting genetic counselling for schizophrenia.

Ethical challenges of genetic counselling for schizophrenia include effective communication of critical scientific information in an easily understood manner by patients and relatives, and the ability to ensure communication is unencumbered by medical jargon. Levels of literacy in the target population may limit this process, making it difficult for patients to attain the desired levels of informed consent to make crucial decisions during genetic counselling. Multilingualism in target communities may further complicate such communication. This paper outlines the ethical principles, challenges
