New appraisals of Kyrieleis plaques: a multimodal imaging study.

PURPOSE: Kyrieleis retinal periarteritis reflects the severe intraocular inflammation experienced by the eye. Its aetiology has not been well established, since only nine cases have been reported and there is no pathological study available in the literature. We determine the pathogenesis of Kyrieleis periarteritis based on interpretation of multimodal imaging findings. METHODS: Charts of patients with Kyrieleis arteritis seen between 2006 and 2014 were retrieved from eight uveitis referral centres throughout the world. Follow-up ranged from 5 to 12 months. RESULTS: Twenty-five eyes with Kyr

Multimodal imaging in a severe case of hydroxychloroquine toxicity.

Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) can be detected most readily on fundus autofluorescence, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, and multifocal electroretinogram. The authors describe a case of a 60-year-old woman with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus undergoing HCQ treatment for 30 years who presented with visual loss over several years. Examination and multimodal imaging showed bilateral retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) changes in a bull's-eye distribution associated with cystoid macular edema. A novel imaging modality, multi-spectral imaging, appeared sensitive

Multimodal magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of primary brain tumors.

Gliomas comprise 80% of primary brain neoplasms, with glioblastoma multiforme being the most commonly diagnosed glioma. The annual incidence is 5.26 per 100,000, or 17,000 newly diagnosed cases per year in the United States. The incidence increases with age, peaking between the 6th and 8th decades. Gliomas are more common among Caucasians and occur more often in men. They can be associated with certain rare hereditary syndromes including Cowden, Turcot, Li-Fraumeni, neurofibromatosis type 1 and type 2, tuberous sclerosis, and familial schwannomatosis. Known risk factors include a history of io

Recent advances in molecular, multimodal and theranostic ultrasound imaging.

Ultrasound (US) imaging is an exquisite tool for the non-invasive and real-time diagnosis of many different diseases. In this context, US contrast agents can improve lesion delineation, characterization and therapy response evaluation. US contrast agents are usually micrometer-sized gas bubbles, stabilized with soft or hard shells. By conjugating antibodies to the microbubble (MB) surface, and by incorporating diagnostic agents, drugs or nucleic acids into or onto the MB shell, molecular, multimodal and theranostic MBs can be generated. We here summarize recent advances in molecular, multimoda

Multimodal imaging guidance for laser ablation in tracheal stenosis.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Laser-induced damage of tracheal wall microstructures might contribute to recurrence after bronchoscopic treatment of tracheal strictures. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate how multimodal imaging using white light bronchoscopy (WLB), endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), and optical coherence tomography (OCT) might identify in vivo airway wall changes before and resulting from Nd:YAG laser ablation and dilation of tracheal stenosis. STUDY DESIGN: Case study. METHODS: Commercially available WLB, high frequency EBUS using a 20-MHz radial probe and time-domain, front

Multimodality Cardiovascular Imaging in the Evaluation of Cardiac Sarcoidosis.

Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) is a granulomatous disease associated with increased cardiovascular risk, including symptomatic high-grade atrioventricular block, ventricular arrhythmia, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death. Diagnosis can be challenging and requires a high index of suspicion. Although endomyocardial biopsy demonstrating noncaseating granulomas can diagnose CS with high specificity, sampling error leads to low sensitivity. CS is typically diagnosed using a combination of clinical criteria and advanced cardiac imaging, such as cardiac magnetic resonance and positron emission tomogra

Multimodality Imaging Evaluation of Hepatic Epithelioid Angiomyolipoma.

Hepatic epithelioid angiomyolipoma (HEAML) is a rare benign tumor in the liver. It is crucial to differentiate HEAML from hepatocellular carcinoma. We herein report the case of a 42-year-old female who was diagnosed with HEAML by multiple imaging studies. The histopathological examination also confirmed the diagnosis. Imaging studies include magnetic resonance imaging, digital subtraction angiography (DSA), and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (US). Typical image findings of HEAML by US include early drainage of hepatic veins, higher peak intensity, shorter time to peak on time-intensity curve, an

Actinic keratosis staging in multimodal image data.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Actinic Keratosis (AK) is a common skin condition, usually appearing on sun-exposed areas, whose progression is associated with characteristic dermatoscopic and structural changes. Early detection of AK is crucial, as cancer progression may occur in changed skin. This study aimed to develop a multimodal, machine-learning-based framework combining dermatoscopic and high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) data to automatically stage AK and identify early lesions. METHODS: A dataset containing 222 pairs of dermatoscopic and HFUS images was clinically evaluated using the 3-poin

Imaging of anorectal and perineal emergencies - a multimodality review.

Acute anorectal and perineal emergencies encompass a wide spectrum of infectious, inflammatory, traumatic, iatrogenic, and neoplastic conditions that often present with nonspecific symptoms but may rapidly progress to significant morbidity if unrecognized. Imaging plays a central role in diagnosis, assessment of disease extent, detection of complications, and treatment planning because clinical examination frequently underestimates involvement of the complex anorectal and perineal spaces. Computed tomography (CT) is the primary imaging modality in the emergency setting owing to its rapid acqui

The Femoral Neck Unveiled: A Multimodality Imaging Roadmap.

The femoral neck, a critical biomechanical conduit, is susceptible to diverse pathologies requiring precise radiological diagnosis to prevent adverse outcomes. This review serves as a visual and textual reference for enhancing diagnostic confidence through pattern recognition and multimodality correlation. Imaging evaluation begins with radiography, offering an excellent osseous overview but limited sensitivity for early disease. Computed tomography (CT) provides superior bony detail for trauma and surgical planning, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive modality for mar

Multimodality Imaging of Small Bowel Crohn Disease.

Computed tomography enterography, magnetic resonance enterography, and bowel ultrasound are complementary tools central to diagnosing and monitoring Crohn disease. These modalities can identify active inflammation, penetrating, and stricturing disease. Crohn disease must be monitored frequently to guide therapy, and resolution of inflammation on imaging correlates directly with steroid-free clinical remission. While disease activity assessment is qualitative, newer quantitative techniques to assess active inflammation are emerging. These as well as other techniques, such as contrast-enhanced u

Multimodality Imaging for the Diagnosis and Evaluation of Pulmonary Sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory disorder characterized by noncaseating granulomas. The diagnosis of sarcoidosis is based on three criteria: clinical history, consistent imaging findings, and histopathology. Radiologists play an important role for the diagnosis and follow-up evaluation of patients with sarcoidosis, which often require a multimodal approach. This imaging essay will explore the typical and atypical imaging manifestations of sarcoidosis at chest radiography, CT, PET/CT, and MRI, provide imaging examples, and discuss relevant differential diagnoses for clinical practice.

Pericardial Agenesis: The Significance of Multimodality Imaging in Diagnosis.

Pericardial agenesis is a rare pericardial defect that can be complete or partial. Often an incidental finding, most patients are asymptomatic at time of detection but some can present with symptoms of atypical chest pain, dyspnoea, palpitations or dizziness. There can be a delay in diagnosis as imaging is essential to confirm the diagnosis although there may be subtle signs on radiographic imaging and electrocardiogram. Both cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography can be used to diagnose the condition and distinguish between complete and partial pericardial agenesis, althou

Twist in the Bowel: A Multimodality Radiological Imaging Spectrum.

Volvulus affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is one of the common causes of recurrent pain in the abdomen, and often, patients present with non-specific abdominal pain associated with nausea and/or vomiting. A high degree of suspicion is required at the clinician's end to suspect this diagnosis, which is usually confirmed by imaging using radiographs, fluoroscopic evaluation, and computed tomography. Familiarity of the clinician and radiologist with the imaging appearances of these emergent conditions on various imaging modalities is quintessential to avoiding life-threatening complicati

Role of Multimodality Imaging in Transcatheter Structural Interventions.

Cardiac imaging is the backbone for safe and optimal transcatheter structural interventions. Transthoracic echocardiogram is the initial modality to assess valvular disorders, while transesophageal echocardiogram is best to delineate the mechanism of valvular regurgitation, preprocedural assessment for transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, and for intraprocedural guidance. Cardiac computed tomography is the modality of choice for assessing calcifications, maneuvering multiplaner reconstruction of different cardiac structures, preprocedural planning for various transcatheter valve replacement, and

Multimodality Imaging in Arrhythmogenic Left Ventricular Cardiomyopathy.

The term arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) describes a large spectrum of myocardial diseases characterized by progressive fibrotic or fibrofatty replacement, which gives the substrate for the occurrence of ventricular tachyarrhythmias and the development of ventricular dysfunction. This condition may exclusively affect the left ventricle, leading to the introduction of the term arrhythmogenic left ventricular cardiomyopathy (ALVC). The clinical features of ALVC are progressive fibrotic replacement with the absence or mild dilation of the LV and the occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias withi
