Cotyledonoid leiomyoma of uterus: a case report.

The diagnosis of uterine smooth muscle tumors is usually not difficult. Occasionally, benign tumors with an unusual growth pattern may cause some diagnostic confusion for pathologists who had not experienced such a tumor before. A fifty-one year old female patient had admitted to our gynecology outpatient clinics with abnormal uterine bleeding (menorrhagia) and undergone a surgery with a diagnosis of pelvic mass. A neoplasm consisting of spindle cell nodules with prominent hydropic degeneration was observed at pathological examination. Tumor cells were positive for vimentin, desmin and smooth

An Incidental Discovery of Rectal Leiomyoma in an Asymptomatic Patient: A Case Report.

Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors predominantly found in the uterine wall, with rare occurrences in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, we report a rare case of a leiomyoma that was incidentally found in the rectum of an asymptomatic male who underwent a routine screening colonoscopy. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of leiomyoma. This case emphasizes the significance of routine colonoscopic screenings in the early detection of asymptomatic colorectal lesions and the pivotal role of Immunohistochemistry in differentiating rectal leiomyomas from other mesenchymal neo

Solitary fibrous tumor of the lung: a case report.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are relatively rare neoplasms that commonly occur in the pleura. The pathological feature of SFTs is a proliferation of spindle-shaped cells in interlacing or storiform fascicles. SFTs appear to derived from pluripotential submesothelial cells, but not the covering mesothelium. SFTs distinctively show diffuse staining for CD34 but lack staining for smooth muscle markers. We herein report a relatively rare case of a 68-year-old male patient without symptoms, who underwent resection for what was considered to be SFT.

Destructive invasion of the clavicle by desmoid tumor: a case report.

Desmoid tumors are rare, soft-tissue neoplasms that do not metastasize, but exhibit aggressive growth and local invasion. They originate most frequently from abdominal fascial structures, although they can also appear at extra-abdominal sites. The most common extra-abdominal locations include the shoulder, chest wall, back, thigh, and head and neck. In children, desmoid tumors are more infiltrative, having a tendency towards osseous involvement more frequently than in adult patients. We report acase of a supraspinatus muscle desmoid tumor in a female patient with clavicle destruction.

[Vestibular schwannoma].

The vestibular schwannoma is a benign intracranial tumor of the myelin-forming cells of the vestibulocochlear nerve or cranial nerve VIII. It comprises 8-10% of all intracranial neoplasms in adults. It originates in the vestibular portion of the cranial nerve VIII and it is located in the cerebellopontine angle. This disorder is characterized by ipsilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, disturbed sense of balance and altered gait, facial numbness, muscle weakness or ipsilateral paralysis. This report presents the magnetic resonance imaging of a patient with this rare condition.

Hamartomas of the breast.

The clinical and pathologic findings of 17 hamartomas of the breast were studied. All neoplasms were evident as clinically and mammographically discrete masses. The pathologic findings were varied and included circumscribed fibrocystic disease, adenolipoma, fibroadenoma with fat and fibroadenoma with lobules. The heterologous elements identified were cartilage and smooth muscle. All lesions were treated by simple excision. In this study, four different microscopic patterns of hamartoma are described and the necessity for a close clinicopathologic correlation is pointed out in the diagnosis of

MR Imaging of Atraumatic Muscle Disorders.

Atraumatic disorders of skeletal muscles include congenital variants; inherited myopathies; acquired inflammatory, infectious, or ischemic disorders; neoplastic diseases; and conditions leading to muscle atrophy. These have overlapping appearances at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and are challenging for the radiologist to differentiate. The authors organize muscle disorders into four MR imaging patterns: (a) abnormal anatomy with normal signal intensity, (b) edema/inflammation, (c) mass, and (d) atrophy, highlighting each of their key clinical and imaging findings. Anatomic muscle variants,

The widened forwarding total laryngectomy, "squared" or "carrè" laryngectomy according to some Authors of French School, is a surgical procedure not "on an organ" but "in an area" or "region" which proposes to delete, in one step, the larynx, the bone hyoid, the fasciae and the prelaryngeal muscles, the thyroid gland and, if necessary, a more

Focal myositis of the tongue presenting as macroglossia.

Focal myositis (FM) is a benign localized inflammatory process of unknown aetiology, which presents as a rapidly enlarging soft-tissue mass that evolves into a localized lesion. It is most often mistaken for a neoplasm. Histologically, it is characterized by marked myopathic changes of the muscle fibres, lymphocytic infiltration and interstitial fibrosis. We describe a case of focal myositis of the tongue and review this rare condition.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumour-mimicking retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma.

A young man in his 40s was evaluated in the emergency department for abdominal and right flank pain. A CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis showed a solid, well-circumscribed lesion measuring 7.1×8.1×5.4 cm, which was arising from the retroperitoneum and extending from the third portion of the duodenum towards the right kidney. A percutaneous core biopsy was obtained, demonstrating an atypical smooth muscle neoplasm suggestive of a low-grade leiomyosarcoma. The patient underwent surgery for an en-block resection of the mass and the final pathology confirmed a perivascular epithelioid cell neoplas

Cervical superficial myofibroblastoma: Case report and review of the literature.

Superficial myofibroblastoma of the lower female genital tract is a rare benign, recently recognized neoplasm that mostly affects the vulvovaginal area. Our report discusses a case of cervical superficial myofibroblastoma of the lower female genital tract in a 45-year-old patient who is presented with menometrorrhagia. On examination, she had multiple uterine fibroids and a circumscribed submucosal mass lesion involving the anterior lip of cervix. At hysterectomy, histopathological examination of the cervical mass revealed a relatively hypocellular tumor consisted of bland spindled and stellat

Recurrent cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma of the uterus.

Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle neoplasm with an unusual growth pattern that is characterized by intramural dissection within the uterine corpus and often a placental-like appearance macroscopically in its extrauterine component that may be alarming to the surgeon. All cases reported to date have been nonaggressive. We report a case in a 33-yr-old woman who had a history of prolonged uterine bleeding. She was operated upon for uterine leiomyomas, and the diagnosis of cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma was made at the time of intraoperative consultation. To maintain f

Novel SRF-ICA1L Fusions in Cellular Myoid Neoplasms With Potential For Malignant Behavior.

Pericytic tumors comprise a histologic continuum of neoplasms with perivascular myoid differentiation, which includes glomus tumors, myopericytoma, myofibroma, and angioleiomyoma. Despite their morphologic overlap, recent data suggest a dichotomy in their genetic signatures, including recurrent NOTCH gene fusions in glomus tumors and PDGFRB mutations in myofibromas and myopericytomas. Moreover, SRF-RELA fusions have been described in a subset of cellular variants of myofibroma and myopericytoma showing myogenic differentiation. Triggered by an index case of an unclassified cellular myoid tumor

TFE3 -Rearranged PEComa/PEComa-like Neoplasms : Report of 25 New Cases Expanding the Clinicopathologic Spectrum and Highlighting its Association With Prior Exposure to Chemotherapy.

Since their original description as a distinctive neoplastic entity, ~50 TFE3 -rearranged perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) have been reported. We herein report 25 new TFE3 -rearranged PEComas and review the published literature to further investigate their clinicopathologic spectrum. Notably, 5 of the 25 cases were associated with a prior history of chemotherapy treatment for cancer. This is in keeping with prior reports, based mainly on small case series, with overall 11% of TFE3 -rearranged PEComas being diagnosed postchemotherapy. The median age of our cohort was 38 years. Broad Ligament Fibroid Mimicking an Ovarian Tumor: A Case Report.

Broad ligament leiomyomas are rare extrauterine smooth muscle tumors that can mimic adnexal neoplasms because of their atypical location and degenerative changes. We report the case of a 47-year-old multiparous woman with lower abdominal pain for five to six months, worsening over the preceding eight to 10 days. Ultrasonography demonstrated a large predominantly solid-cystic abdominopelvic mass with minimal vascularity, with neither ovary separately visualized. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-defined mass centered in the right broad ligament region, showing a T2-hypointense so

Clinical and Pathologic Description of Three Aneurysmal Bone Cyst Cases With Novel USP6 Fusion Partners Including SEC24D, HNRNPC, and ERRFI1.

Ubiquitin-specific protease 6 (USP6)-associated neoplasms constitute a spectrum of related entities that share clinical and morphological characteristics. They are defined molecularly by the presence of a USP6 gene rearrangement that results in promoter swap fusions involving a range of partner genes that activate expression of full-length USP6. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed whole transcriptome results and identified USP6-associated neoplasms in the St. Jude clinical genomics cohort, with a focus on novel fusion partners. Three patients (ages 4-21 years) presented with bone lesion

Comparative analysis of RCAS1 level in neoplasms and placenta.

The tumor associated antigen RCAS1 (receptor-binding cancer antigen expressed on SiSo cells) expressed with high frequency in various cancer and trophoblast cells, inhibits growth of estrogen receptor-expressing cells and induces apoptosis. Because previous reports demonstrated RCAS1 presence only by non-quantitative immunocytochemistry methods, we decided to use a Western blotting with anti-RCAS1 monoclonal antibodies for estimation of the relative content of the tumor-associated antigen. One hundred tissue samples were assayed (neoplasms, chronic inflammatory diseases, healthy tissues, troph
