Nontuberculous mycobacterial keratitis. Report of two cases and review of the literature.

We report two cases of nontuberculous mycobacterial keratitis. To our knowledge, case 1 is the first documented case of Mycobacterium chelonei sclerokeratitis and case 2 is the first report of Mycobacterium flavescens keratitis. A total of 40 cases of nontuberculous mycobacterial keratitis involving at least five different species have been reported previously in the literature. Almost all of these opportunistic infections have occurred following either accidental or surgical ocular trauma, usually associated with the use of local corticosteroids. Encountered infrequently, these organisms can

Atypical mycobacteria infections of surgical sites: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Atypical mycobacteria (ATB) are a rare cause of surgical site infections (SSIs). They present with clinical features of erythema, induration, and sinus formation, which recur despite conventional treatment. Early diagnosis is difficult and requires a high index of suspicion for further investigations to confirm atypical mycobacterial infection. Treatment encompasses a combination of polymicrobial agents and surgical debridement. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and treatment outcomes of atypical mycobacterial infections in surgical sites. M

Mycobacterial infection in farmed turbot Scophthalmus maximus.

Mycobacteriosis (piscine tuberculosis) has been reported to affect a wide range of freshwater and marine fish species; however, this is the first report describing mycobacterial infections in turbot Scophthalmus maximus. High numbers of granulomas were initially observed in the organs of moribund farmed turbot. Bacteriological analysis of organs with granulomas led to the isolation of Mycobacterium marinum. Further analysis, to determine the prevalence of the infection in the farm and to identify its source, showed the occurrence of a dual infection by M. marinum and M. chelonae. The presence

Clinical evaluation of multiplex PCR for the differential diagnosis of major pathogenic mycobacteria in East China.

Distinguishing between Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and nontuberculous mycobacteria infections remains clinically challenging due to their drastically different treatment regimens, underscoring the critical need for rapid and accurate mycobacterial identification to guide effective patient management. This study aimed to develop a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the detection and typing of major pathogenic mycobacteria - including MTB, Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), Mycobacteroides chelonae - Mycobacteroides abscessus group (MCAG), and Mycobacterium kansasii - and t

Prodrug florfenicol amine is activated by intrinsic resistance to target Mycobacterium abscessus.

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria are emerging pathogens with high intrinsic drug resistance. Among these, Mycobacterium abscessus is particularly refractory owing to its extensive array of resistance mechanisms. Here we introduce florfenicol amine (FF-NH2), a major metabolite of the antibiotic florfenicol, which acts as a prodrug with narrow-spectrum activity against M. abscessus-chelonae complex species. FF-NH2 leverages intrinsic M. abscessus resistance conferred by the transcription factor WhiB7. It avoids WhiB7-dependent resistance mediated by the O-acetyltransferase Cat and is activated by th

Failure of the Mycobacterium bovis BCG vaccine: some species of environmental mycobacteria block multiplication of BCG and induction of protective immunity to tuberculosis.

The efficacy of Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine against pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) varies enormously in different populations. The prevailing hypothesis attributes this variation to interactions between the vaccine and mycobacteria common in the environment, but the precise mechanism has so far not been clarified. Our study demonstrates that prior exposure to live environmental mycobacteria can result in a broad immune response that is recalled rapidly after BCG vaccination and controls the multiplication of the vaccine. In these sensitized mice, BCG elicits only a

Mycobacterium chelonei masquerading as Corynebacterium in a case of infectious keratitis: a diagnostic dilemma.

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of Mycobacterium keratitis can often be missed both clinically and microbiologically and this report highlights one such case. METHODS: Review of medical and microbiological records. RESULTS: We report a case of Mycobacterium keratitis in a 25-year-old man that was misdiagnosed as Corynebacterium keratitis at initial presentation. Presence of partially stained and beaded bacilli in a Gram-stained smear of repeat corneal scrapings raised the suspicion of an unusual organism. Ziehl-Neelsen staining of the decolorized Gram-stained smear and subculture on Löwenstein-Jensen

Clinical and Pathological Findings Associated with Mycobacteriosis in Captive Syngnathids.

Mycobacteriosis is an important disease that affects captive and wild aquatic fish. Syngnathids are susceptible to infection by non-tuberculous mycobacteria. The aim of this study was to describe clinical signs, and macroscopic and histological lesions in 25 syngnathids and the molecular characterization of the causative mycobacteria. Clinical presentation ranged from sudden death to non-specific signs, including anorexia, poor body condition, weight loss and marked dyspnea with increased respiratory effort and rate. Gross lesions were mostly ulcers on the tail and small white nodules in the l
