Narrative Matters: Adolescence in The Manosphere - A perfect storm?

The Netflix drama 'Adolescence' brought 'the manosphere' (a virtual space defined by misogynist views) and its potential dangers for teenage boys into the mainstream narrative. This paper describes parallels between toxic masculinity communities and other extremist groups. It considers why so many teenage boys may be attracted to the manosphere and why a developmental context is crucial to an informed response. The unique characteristics of 'the teenage brain' offer a framework to guide professionals working with young people who are exploring this type of content.

Parenting Children with Down Syndrome.

This symposium includes twelve personal narratives from parents of children with Down syndrome. These narratives foster better understanding of these parents' experiences of learning that their child has Down syndrome, navigating sometimes labrynthine medical, educational, and social services bureaucracy, and contending with an implicitly-and sometimes explicitly-ableist culture. Four commentaries on these narratives are also included, authored by experts and scholars in bioethics, disability studies, health and science communication, and public advocacy. The goal of this symposium is to call

Elements of person-centred diagnostic imaging care in low-and middle-income countries: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic imaging professionals are trained to deliver safe and high-quality person-centred radiographic diagnostic imaging care. The term person-centred care has been described as a confused concept without a unified definition. This systematic review identified the elements that have been used to measure person-centred care in diagnostic imaging in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: A systematic review was conducted and reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis statement. Embase, MEDLINE and Cochrane lib

Public discourse narratives: from 'Secret Aid Worker' discontent to shifting power in humanitarian systems.

Public discourse is rich in meaning, reflecting consensus, dissent, and change. Yet, very little public discourse on the humanitarian sector has been authored by aid workers themselves. We conducted a thematic analysis of the 'Secret Aid Worker' (SAW) series, published in The Guardian newspaper between 2015 and 2018, the only corpus of data on humanitarian life experiences publicly accessible through mainstream media. Our research questions were twofold: how did authors frame their work and appraise humanitarian structures?; and how did they reflect and amplify humanitarian issues of the time?

Tele-Assessment of Oral Personal Narratives in Arabic- and Hebrew-Speaking Children Using the Global TALES Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Tele-assessment (TA) has the potential to enhance access to speech therapy. This preliminary study aimed to investigate the impact of assessment mode (face-to-face [FTF] vs. TA) on the microstructure level and chosen topics of personal narratives produced by Arabic-speaking and Hebrew-speaking school-age children living in Israel. We also investigated whether performance variations, if evident, could be attributed to the children's language/culture. METHODS: Eighty-nine 10-year-old children, 38 Arabic-speaking and 51 Hebrew-speaking, living in Israel, participated in this study.

Autobiographical memory and psychopathology: Is memory specificity as important as we make it seem?

Several decades of research have established reduced autobiographical memory specificity, or overgeneral memory, as an important cognitive factor associated with the risk for and maintenance of a range of psychiatric diagnoses. In measuring this construct, experimenters code autobiographical memories for the presence or absence of a single temporal detail that indicates that the remembered event took place on a single, specific, day (Last Thursday when I rode bikes with my son), or multiple days (When I rode bikes with my son). Studies indicate that the specificity of memories and the amount o

'Half a man? Still a human': Photo-stories to dismantle unsettling representations and re-define the self-identities of men living with paraplagia.

ABSTRACTDisability in anglophone media, film and culture is often depicted in ways that rarely recognise people with disabilities as whole human beings. This creates deficit perceptions on what it means to live with a disability. Through the use of photo-voice, fifteen working-class coloured men living with paraplegia in the townships of Cape Town - South Africa, created photo-stories depicting the ways in which they think main-stream society sees them and the ways in which they see themselves. The analysis of their photo-stories was used to contribute to a discourse on photo-voice as activism

Conceptualizing Consent: Cross-national and Temporal Representations of Sexual Consent in Young Africans' Creative Narratives on HIV.

Sexual violence, comprising all non-consensual sexual acts, is an important driver of HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa. Definitions of sexual violence rely on understandings of sexual consent, understood as a feeling of willingness that is communicated via shared indicators of consent. In this paper, through analysis of young authors' narrative-based social representations, we sought to provide insight into young Africans' sense-making around sexual consent in order to develop a conceptual framework that can guide future methodological and conceptual work. We analyzed representations of sex

Health and Well-Being Consequences for Gender Violence Survivors from Isolating Gender Violence.

Recent scientific literature has published about the Isolating Gender Violence (IGV), the violence exerted by harassers against those who support their victims. IGV provokes suffering to advocates with health and well-being consequences that have been analyzed by more recent research; but IGV provokes also suffering on the victims of gender violence when they see the suffering of those who have supported them and also for their isolation. Thus, the aim of the present study is to explore the health and well-being consequences of IGV on gender violence survivors. The methodology includes three n

Reading, Trauma and Literary Caregiving 1914-1918: Helen Mary Gaskell and the War Library.

This article is about the relationship between reading, trauma and responsive literary caregiving in Britain during the First World War. Its analysis of two little-known documents describing the history of the War Library, begun by Helen Mary Gaskell in 1914, exposes a gap in the scholarship of war-time reading; generates a new narrative of "how," "when," and "why" books went to war; and foregrounds gender in its analysis of the historiography. The Library of Congress's T. W. Koch discovered Gaskell's ground-breaking work in 1917 and reported its successes to the American Library Association.

The big picture: storytelling ability in adults with autism spectrum conditions.

Previous work on story-telling ability in autism spectrum conditions (ASC) has found a pattern of relatively intact use of story grammar in ASC narratives; however, prior analysis has concentrated primarily on whether specific story components are included, rather than how they are included. The present study analyzes an existing narrative dataset, concentrating on the kind of information that individuals with and without high functioning autism or Asperger syndrome include about story elements such as setting, character, conflict, and resolution. This analysis showed that individuals with ASC

A Comprehensive Review of Electrolyte Imbalances and Their Applied Aspects in Dermatology.

Electrolytes play a pivotal role in the maintenance of neutrality in the minerals of the cells - also, the generation and conduction of action potentials in neurons and muscles. Key electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, and phosphate. Electrolyte imbalances can result in elevated or diminished levels. Abnormal electrolyte levels, whether raised or decreased, interfere with normal physiological activities and may result in life-threatening consequences. Electrolyte imbalances are common in critical care units, although they are less frequent in dermatological con

The historical evolution of smallpox treatment in Japan visualised through Japanese artwork and woodblock prints.

Art reveals core human emotions during catastrophes like epidemics, allowing people to narrate their coping stories. This review examines smallpox's historical evolution and treatment in Japan, integrating visual art with medical history. It provides chronological insights from smallpox's arrival and traditional remedies to the era of vaccination and public health measures leading to eventual eradication. Art played a vital role in Japan's smallpox eradication, helping to galvanise societal engagement and public trust. Efforts included utilising political and administrative systems for vaccina

Contagious Sympathies in The Last Man.

In The Last Man, Mary Shelley relies on theories of Romantic medicine that give her an unconventional way to conceptualize and narrate time and space. For the Romantics, organs, bodies, and communities were all intimately connected through "sympathy." The Last Man carefully employs the connection between biological sympathy and contagious disease to consider how suffering inhabits space. Lionel's individual suffering intertwines with the global suffering from the fictional plague of the novel, which threatens the boundaries of both Europe and the white, European body much as its non-fictional

Debilitated Lifeworlds: Women's Narratives of Forced Sterilization as Delinking from Reproductive Rights.

Peasant women in Cajamarca, Peru, who were sterilized by the Peruvian government in the 1990s, narrate their experiences of reproductive abuse using Andean medical principles of debilidad and fuerza (debility and strength) (Tapias 2006). In their narratives, many describe a generalized sense of loss of strength resulting from the procedure. This contrasts with the reproductive rights framework's emphasis on infertility as the main harm. In this article, I ponder the dissonance between these two frameworks and propose the concept of debilitated lifeworlds as decolonial feminist delinking (Migno

(Un)triggering Anorexia: A Cognitive Literary Analysis of Lia "the Liar" in Wintergirls (2009).

The importance of authorial intention has been debated extensively in literary studies. In cognitive literary studies, however, the effects books provoke in readers are of greater relevance. With an unreliable intradiegetic narrator, ambivalent about her denial of hunger, Wintergirls (2009), a US YA anorexia novel, embodies the spiraling network of lies that feeds this condition. This essay takes Wintergirls as a starting point to discuss the therapeutic or harmful effects of literature, over and above the intentions of the writer. Adopting a cognitive literary perspective, this essay proposes

Anterior Capsule Reconstruction of the Native Hip: A Technique Guide.

This is a technique guide for open anterior capsule reconstruction in unstable native hips due to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a connective tissue disease that predisposes an individual to hypermobility of their soft tissues and recurrent subluxations and dislocations of their joints. This may lead to constant instability, guarding of the hip, and subsequent arthritic changes and poor quality of life. We demonstrate anterior capsule reconstruction of the hip using an Achilles tendon allograft performed through a direct anterior approach to the hip (Heuter's approach). This
