Epidemiology of Aspergillus species causing keratitis in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of fungal keratitis has increased in recent years. While the epidemiology and clinical roles of various Candida and Fusarium species have been relatively well-identified in infections of the eye, data regarding keratitis caused by Aspergillus species are scant. Accurate and rapid diagnosis is important for successful management of this infection. OBJECTIVES: To present the first molecular epidemiological data from Mexico during a 4-year period of cases admitted with Aspergillus keratitis to a tertiary care eye institution in Mexico City. PATIENTS/METHODS: A total of

Paecilomyces Keratitis in Western India: A Case Report.

Cases of ocular trauma with vegetative matter are commonly encountered in ophthalmic practice in India. Many of these present with keratitis/corneal ulceration, of which fungi have a predominant share. We report a case of fungal keratitis and graft infection with Paecilomyces lilacinus, which was successfully treated with topical and systemic Voriconazole. A farmer presented with corneal ulcer and hypopyon in left eye following vegetative trauma during farming. A provisional diagnosis of fungal corneal ulcer was made based on clinical features and topical anti-fungal therapy with Natamycin was

Voriconazole in the management of Alternaria keratitis.

PURPOSE: To discuss the role of voriconazole in the management of Alternaria keratitis. METHODS: Case report and literature review. RESULTS: A 69-year-old man with a history of corneal foreign body removal developed a stromal infiltrate 2 months later that did not improve despite topical antibiotics and natamycin. On our initial examination, visual acuity (VA) was 20/40, and he had a central, full-thickness, reticular appearing infiltrate. Oral clarithromycin was added because of the atypical pattern of the infiltrate. However, no improvement was noted. A repeat culture revealed coagulase-ne

Fungal keratitis: An overview of clinical and laboratory aspects.

Mycotic keratitis or keratomycosis is a fungal infection with global distribution. The dominant aetiology of this disease varies based on geographical origin, socioeconomic status, and climatic condition. Generally, Aspergillus spp. and Fusarium spp. are common in tropical and subtropical regions and Candida spp. are dominant in temperate areas. Demonstration of fungal elements in microscopic examination besides the isolation of fungi in culture is the gold standard of laboratory diagnosis. As the culture is a time-consuming procedure, other approaches such as in vivo confocal microscopy which

Nigrospora causing corneal ulcer--a case report.

A patient from a rural background developed corneal ulceration following an insect hitting the eye. Corneal scrapings when processed for bacterial and fungal growth yielded Nigrospora, a contaminant fungus. This fungus has been quoted in literature as a common contaminant of no pathogenic significance. Herein, we describe its role as the causative agent of corneal ulcer, which has not been reported thus far.

Fusarium solani keratitis: role of antifungal susceptibility testing and identification to the species level for proper management.

We report a patient with fungal keratitis caused by a multiresistant Fusarium solani in a tertiary care hospital located in southern Brazil. A 55-year-old man with a history of ocular trauma presented with keratitis in left eye. The patient has a complicated clinical course and failed to respond to local and systemic antifungal treatment, and required eye enucleation. Despite multiple topical, intraocular and systemic antifungal treatments, hyphal infiltration persisted in the corneal transplant causing continuous recurrences. The cultures of corneal biopsy scrapings were positive for Fusarium

Recent trends: Medical management of infectious keratitis.

This review article highlights the newer diagnostic modalities and approaches in the medical management of infectious keratitis. A Medline literature search conducted to March 2014 has been included. Recent studies or publications were selected from international indexed journals using suitable key words. Development of specular microscopy and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has a promising role as diagnostic modalities in infectious keratitis, especially in refractory cases. Previously fortified antibiotics have been the mainstay of treatment for bacterial keratitis. Recently, the advent of f

A Study on the Effect of Quaternization of Polyene Antibiotics' Structures on Their Activity, Toxicity, and Impact on Membrane Models.

Polyene antibiotics have been used in antifungal therapy since the mid-twentieth century. They are highly valued for their broad spectrum of activity and the rarity of pathogen resistance to their action. However, their use in the treatment of systemic mycoses often results in serious side-effects. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in the development of new antifungal drugs based on polyenes, particularly due to the emergence of highly dangerous pathogenic strains of fungi, such as Candida auris, and the increased incidence of mucormycosis. Considerable understanding has been establi
