Adherence Patterns to National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines for Referral of Women With Breast Cancer to Genetics Professionals.

OBJECTIVE: Genetic predisposition is responsible for 5% to 10% of breast cancer. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) established guidelines delineating appropriate candidates for genetic counseling. This study aims to determine referral patterns for genetic counseling in women who met such guidelines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Utilizing an institutional tumor registry, patients from an academic oncology program who met a subset of NCCN guidelines for genetic referrals between 2004 and 2010 were identified (breast cancer diagnosis ≤50 y without a known BRCA mutation). A retrospective

Concordance Between Registry and Administrative Data in the Determination of Comorbidity: A Multi-institutional Study.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize agreement between administrative and registry data in the determination of patient-level comorbidities. BACKGROUND: Previous research finds poor agreement between these 2 types of data in the determination of outcomes. We hypothesized that concordance between administrative and registry data would also be poor. METHODS: A cohort of inpatient operations (length of stay 1 day or greater) was obtained from a consortium of 8 hospitals. Within each hospital, National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) data were merged with intra-institutional inpatient adminis

Cancer awareness, diagnosis and treatment needs in Mizoram, India: evidence from 18 years trends (2003-2020).

BACKGROUND: Despite being the second least populated state, Mizoram exhibits the highest incidence rate of cancer in India. Its inhabitants, constituting an endogamous and isolated population, have embraced their own distinct culture, way of life and dietary preferences, setting them apart from the rest of mainland India. In 2003, the Mizoram Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) was established under the auspices of the National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR), a division of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in collaboration with the Department of Health & F

Breast cancer risk is increased in the years following false-positive breast cancer screening.

A small number of studies have investigated breast cancer (BC) risk among women with a history of false-positive recall (FPR) in BC screening, but none of them has used time-to-event analysis while at the same time quantifying the effect of false-negative diagnostic assessment (FNDA). FNDA occurs when screening detects BC, but this BC is missed on diagnostic assessment (DA). As a result of FNDA, screenings that detected cancer are incorrectly classified as FPR. Our study linked data recorded in the Flemish BC screening program (women aged 50-69 years) to data from the national cancer registry.

Oral contraceptive use and risk of liver cancer: a population-based study, systematic review, and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oral contraceptive use has been suggested to increase the risk of liver cancer. Although the International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded in 1999 that there was sufficient evidence of an association, this was based on case-control studies with few liver cancer cases. We aimed to provide more robust epidemiological evidence on this association by analysing data from two large prospective UK cohorts and additionally conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of previous observational studies. METHODS: In our population-based study, the relationship between oral contra

Trends in risk for therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome/acute myeloid leukemia after initial chemo/immunotherapy for common and rare lymphoid neoplasms, 2000-2018.

BACKGROUND: Historically, survivors of common lymphoid neoplasms (LNs) had increased risks for therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome/acute myeloid leukemia (tMDS/AML). Despite major treatment advances in the treatment of LNs over the last two decades, a comprehensive evaluation of tMDS/AML trends following both common and rare LNs treated in this contemporary period is lacking. METHODS: In US cancer registries during 2000-2018, we identified 1496 tMDS/AML cases among 186,503 adults who were treated with initial chemo/immunotherapy for first primary LN and survived ≥1 year. We quantified tM

BACKGROUND: .-Sinonasal malignancies are rare, aggressive, deadly and challenging tumors to diagnose and treat. Since 2000, age-adjusted incidence rates average less than 1 case per 100,000 per year, male and female combined, in the United States. For the entire cohort, 2000-2017, overall median age-onset was 62.6 years. Carcinoma constitutes over 90% of these upper respiratory cancers and most cases are advanced, more than 72% (regional or distant stage) when the diagnosis is made. Composite mortality at 5 years was 108 excess deaths/1000/year with a mortality ratio of 558%, and 41% of deaths

Screening for Wilms tumor and hepatoblastoma in children with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndromes: a cost-effective model.

BACKGROUND: We undertook a cost-benefit analysis of screening for Wilms tumor and hepatoblastoma in children with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), a known cancer predisposition syndrome. The purpose of this analysis was twofold: first, to assess whether screening in children with BWS has the potential to be cost-effective; second, if screening appears to be cost-effective, to determine which parameters would be most important to assess if a screening trial were initiated. PROCEDURES: We used data from the BWS registry at the National Cancer Institute, the National Wilms Tumor Study (NWTS),
