A Risk-Averse Shelter Location and Evacuation Routing Assignment Problem in an Uncertain Environment.

Disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes and floods continue to have devastating socioeconomic impacts and endanger millions of lives. Shelters are safe zones that protect victims from possible damage, and evacuation routes are the paths from disaster zones toward shelter areas. To enable the timely evacuation of disaster zones, decisions regarding shelter location and routing assignment (i.e., traffic assignment) should be considered simultaneously. In this work, we propose a risk-averse stochastic programming model with a chance constraint that takes into account the uncertainty in the dema

Women's breast cancer prevention behaviors and cancer fears: the sample of post-earthquake.

In the event of a natural disaster, women who assume multiple roles within the family unit tend to postpone their health concerns and delay medical appointments. The present study aims to examine the relationship between the level of fear of breast cancer and the implementation of breast cancer preventive behaviours among women following an earthquake. The sample consists of 2,671 women aged 20 and over who participated voluntarily. The data were collected using two instruments: the Breast Cancer Fear Scale and the Women's Breast Cancer Prevention Behaviors Form. Following a comprehensive revi

Climate Change, Weather, Housing Precarity, and Homelessness: A Systematic Review of Reviews.

This systematic review of reviews was conducted to examine housing precarity and homelessness in relation to climate change and weather extremes internationally. In a thematic analysis of 15 reviews (5 systematic and 10 non-systematic), the following themes emerged: risk factors for homelessness/housing precarity, temperature extremes, health concerns, structural factors, natural disasters, and housing. First, an increased risk of homelessness has been found for people who are vulnerably housed and populations in lower socio-economic positions due to energy insecurity and climate change-induce

Vulnerability of Older Adults in Disasters: Emergency Department Utilization by Geriatric Patients After Hurricane Sandy.

OBJECTIVE: Older adults are a potentially medically vulnerable population with increased mortality rates during and after disasters. To evaluate the impact of a natural disaster on this population, we performed a temporal and geospatial analysis of emergency department (ED) use by adults aged 65 years and older in New York City (NYC) following Hurricane Sandy's landfall. METHODS: We used an all-payer claims database to analyze demographics, insurance status, geographic distribution, and health conditions for post-disaster ED visits among older adults. We compared ED patterns of use in the wee

Disasters and perinatal health:a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The empirical literature on the effects of disaster on pregnancy and the postpartum period is limited. The objective of this review was to examine the existing evidence on the effect of disasters on perinatal health. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted by searching electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cinahl, PsycInfo), including literature on disasters and pregnancy outcomes (e.g., preterm birth, low birth weight, congenital anomalies), mental health, and child development. A total of 110 articles were identified, but many published reports were anecdotes or recommendati

Climate Change and Pregnancy: Risks, Mitigation, Adaptation, and Resilience.

IMPORTANCE: Climate change is affecting the earth, resulting in more extreme temperatures and weather, rising sea levels, more frequent natural disasters, and displacement of populations of plants and animals, including people and insects. These changes affect food and housing security, vector-borne illnesses, and access to clean air and water, all of which influence human health. EVIDENCE AND RESULTS: There are a number of adverse health outcomes linked to heat, air pollution from wildfires, stress from natural disasters, and other elements of climate change. Pregnant people are especially v

Inclusive altruism born of suffering: the relationship between adversity and prosocial attitudes and behavior toward disadvantaged outgroups.

This article reports the results of 2 studies examining altruism born of suffering (E. Staub & J. R. Vollhardt, 2008). More specifically, we examined inclusive altruism born of suffering, which is directed toward members of disadvantaged outgroups. Drawing on and integrating clinical and social psychological theories, we hypothesized that individuals who had suffered from adverse life events would be more likely to help the outgroups in need than those who had not suffered. This was demonstrated for helpers who had experienced various forms of suffering (interpersonal and group-based harm, nat

Long-term electoral participation among Swedish survivors of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Natural disasters can spark demands for democratic accountability yet impose losses and displacement that depress participation. We study approximately 16,000 Swedish tourists exposed to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami who returned home to intact communities. Unlike most people exposed to natural disasters, they faced no increase in the cost of voting, so the case is well suited to studying motivational responses to disaster exposure. We link a survivor registry to population-wide administrative data (N up to 7 million) and use entropy balancing to compare survivors to matched non-exposed citize

A dataset from ten disasters for studying location descriptions and training AI models.

People have been increasingly using social media to post messages during a natural disaster, and describe the locations of victims, damages, difficult situations, and relief resources. Many of these location descriptions are in the forms of detailed and multi-entity descriptions, such as door number addresses, road intersections, and highway exits. Currently, there is limited availability of datasets that contain these detailed location descriptions labeled in disaster-related messages. A lack of these datasets hinders the understanding of how people describe locations during disasters and the

Frontline realities in South African disaster response: Social workers' perspectives on practice challenges.

UNLABELLED: Social workers increasingly integrate disaster work into their practice, recognising it as a developing field within social work. For years, social workers have provided promotive, preventative and treatment services during disasters to ensure community well-being. The increasing demand for social workers in disaster management is driven by a world that is becoming more disaster-prone, requiring effective responses to mitigate their impacts. However, various challenges hinder the effective delivery of disaster social work services. Based on the latter, this article explores the mul

Role of forensic odontology in the identification of victims of major mass disasters across the world: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Forensic odontology (FO) is regarded in the literature as one of the most reliable and economical scientific methods for victim identification in mass disasters (MDs). The present paper systematically reviews the role of forensic odontologists in various global MDs. METHOD: A comprehensive search of the literature databases (PubMed, Medline, SCOPUS, Web of Science and Google Scholar), along with cross-referencing published peer-reviewed articles, was conducted. The search included full texts, abstracts or titles, had no inclusion year limit (searched until September 2017) and was

Do natural catastrophic events and exceptional climatic conditions also affect parasites?

Parasites and parasitologists have always lived together in good and bad luck in a sort of forced marriage. In recent times bad luck certainly prevailed, because of increasing man-made emergencies such as wars, chemical disasters, but also because of natural disasters, amplified by climate change, that condition more and more parasite–host equilibrium. The symposium at the National Congress of the Italian Society for Parasitology, was a first occasion for Italian parasitologists to reason about ‘disaster parasitology’ and researchers’ responsibilities. Extreme weather events and their impacts

Full speed ahead: Navigating the complexities of corporate emergency management.

The recognition that community resilience is directly tied to the ability of businesses to recover from disaster has spawned a renewed focus on how businesses, especially large corporations, manage the impact of disasters on their employees, facilities and business operations. As the number of worldwide natural and human-caused disasters continues to increase, the need for corporate emergency managers has never been greater. With this influx of demand come new challenges for emergency managers, particularly for those coming from the public sector into corporate settings. This paper draws on th

Disasters and Impacts in Appalachian Kentucky: A Behavioral Health Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Major disasters continue to occur in Appalachian Kentucky with devastating consequences. A major disaster, defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as an event too large for a community to manage without outside help, involves emergency responders from the local, state, and federal disaster agencies, plus national volunteers. PURPOSE: This paper reports on recent disasters in eight southeast Kentucky counties, the changing nature of these disasters, and the behavioral health impact on the people affected. METHODS: In this large-scale disaster survey in the Appa

Violent deaths following disasters: A retrospective analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Negative mental health outcomes associated with disaster exposure can increase risks of interpersonal and self-directed violence. However, the link between disaster exposure and increased incidence in violent deaths is not clearly established. STUDY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work is to assess the incidence of violent deaths in non-disaster and disaster periods across five distinct disaster events. METHODS: This study uses an ecological, quasi-experimental design to assess violent deaths in pre-disaster and disaster periods across five U.S. states (e.g., North Carolina, O

Transportation infrastructure planning in supporting disaster mitigation: Case study in Mount Gamalama.

Effective mitigation planning is needed for communities living in areas prone to disasters, including natural calamities such as volcanic eruptions. The development of disaster evacuation routes in disaster-prone areas, including the area where this study was conducted, requires proper planning in transportation infrastructure. Ternate city in Indonesia is a disaster-prone area because of the presence of an active volcanic mountain and an area traversed by the Pacific ring of fire. This area includes a vulnerable zone that has the potential for disasters such as volcanic eruptions, therefore i

Impact of heavy rains of 2018 in western Japan: disaster-induced health outcomes among the population of Innoshima Island.

Southwestern Japan suffered its worst rains in 2018 causing floods and mudslides, claiming 225 lives and forcing millions for evacuations. Referred as "Heisei san-jū-nenshichi-gatsugōu", the disaster was the result of incessant precipitation caused by the interaction of typhoon "Prapiroon" with the seasonal rain front "Baiu". The present epidemiological study aims to investigate disaster-induced health issues in 728 residents of Innoshima island in the Hiroshima Prefecture by comparing their clinical data in pre-disaster (2017) and disaster-hit (2018) years which was obtained from annual healt
