Automated Identification of Aspirin-Exacerbated Respiratory Disease Using Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning: Algorithm Development and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) is an acquired inflammatory condition characterized by the presence of asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis, and respiratory hypersensitivity reactions on ingestion of aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Despite AERD having a classic constellation of symptoms, the diagnosis is often overlooked, with an average of greater than 10 years between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis of AERD. Without a diagnosis, individuals will lack opportunities to receive effective treatments, such as aspirin de

Clinical characteristics and prognostic factors for Crohn's disease relapses using natural language processing and machine learning: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of relapses on disease burden in Crohn's disease (CD) warrants searching for predictive factors to anticipate relapses. This requires analysis of large datasets, including elusive free-text annotations from electronic health records. This study aims to describe clinical characteristics and treatment with biologics of CD patients and generate a data-driven predictive model for relapse using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML). METHODS: We performed a multicenter, retrospective study using a previously validated corpus of CD patient data from eight

Improving early diagnosis of rare diseases using Natural Language Processing in unstructured medical records: an illustration from Dravet syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The growing use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) is promoting the application of data mining in health-care. A promising use of big data in this field is to develop models to support early diagnosis and to establish natural history. Dravet Syndrome (DS) is a rare developmental and epileptic encephalopathy that commonly initiates in the first year of life with febrile seizures (FS). Age at diagnosis is often delayed after 2 years, as it is difficult to differentiate DS at onset from FS. We aimed to explore if some clinical terms (concepts) are significantly more used in the elect

Use of Natural Language Processing to identify Obsessive Compulsive Symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or bipolar disorder.

Obsessive and Compulsive Symptoms (OCS) or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in the context of schizophrenia or related disorders are of clinical importance as these are associated with a range of adverse outcomes. Natural Language Processing (NLP) applied to Electronic Health Records (EHRs) presents an opportunity to create large datasets to facilitate research in this area. This is a challenging endeavour however, because of the wide range of ways in which these symptoms are recorded, and the overlap of terms used to describe OCS with those used to describe other conditions. We developed a

Automating Quality Measures for Heart Failure Using Natural Language Processing: A Descriptive Study in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

BACKGROUND: Some 222 million women worldwide have unmet needs for contraception; they want to avoid pregnancy, but are not using a contraceptive method, primarily because of concerns about side effects associated with most available methods. Expanding contraceptive options-particularly fertility awareness options that provide women with information about which days during their menstrual cycles they are likely to become pregnant if they have unprotected intercourse-has the potential to reduce unmet need. Making these methods available to women through their mobile phones can facilitate access.

An enhanced framework for automated vehicle crash severity prediction under unobserved heterogeneity using natural language processing and data augmentation.

OBJECTIVE: Autonomous vehicle (AV) crashes continue to occur, indicating the need for a comprehensive understanding of their characteristics to support safety management in future mixed-traffic environments. Previous studies employing text mining or rule extraction have faced limitations in generalizing findings due to small, heterogeneous datasets and severe class imbalance in crash severity levels. To address these gaps, this article develops an integrated framework that combines clustering, latent important topic of crash pattern, data augmentation to improve severe crash prediction using A

Thinking about tomorrow: A population-based natural language processing analysis of young adults' hopes and worries for the future.

BACKGROUND: The recent declines in youth mental health highlight the need for research into the factors underlying distress and those that foster well-being. Open-ended text responses offer the potential to reveal novel insights, but remain an underused resource. Advances in natural language processing (NLP) offer powerful tools for efficiently analyzing text in large samples. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to extract meaningful themes from young adults' open-text responses about their future hopes and worries, and to test associations of these themes with internalizing symptoms. Natural language processing of patient in-session speech to predict brief motivational interviewing alcohol intervention response: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centred, goal-oriented psychotherapy for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and numerous other conditions. While some language patterns have been linked to MI response, less is known about how broader linguistic features, sentiment, and engagement relate to post-intervention drinking. This study used natural language processing to examine these associations and clarify mechanisms through which MI for AUD exerts its effects. METHODS: Adults with AUD (N = 68) completed a single MI session with structured feedback and discussion of potential drinki

Natural Language Processing for Automated Classification of Cleft and Craniofacial Procedures From Operative Notes: Model Development and Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: The accurate classification of operative notes is essential for surgical outcomes research; however, CPT code classification is notoriously nonspecific for many procedures. In such situations, the operative note (or "dictation") must be reviewed manually, a process that is labor-intensive and unsustainable. Natural language processing demonstrates tremendous potential for improving the efficiency and accuracy of procedure classification from unstructured operative notes. To date, it remains unexplored whether natural language processing can reliably differentiate between complex, m

Identifying Hidden Barriers to PrEP Adherence Among Young Men Who Have Sex with Men: Application of Natural Language Processing.

In the United States, the incidence rate of new HIV diagnoses continues to increase among young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Despite the availability of effective preventive strategies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the rate of PrEP adherence remains markedly low especially among YMSM. Previous studies have primarily relied on structured surveys with predefined responses to identify barriers to PrEP adherence which may not fully capture the complexities behind the barriers. This is a secondary data analysis of data from a prospective cohort study focusing on YMSM vulnerable to H

A modular pipeline for natural language processing-screened human abstraction of a pragmatic trial outcome from electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Natural language processing (NLP) allows efficient extraction of clinical variables and outcomes from electronic health records (EHR). However, measuring pragmatic clinical trial outcomes may demand accuracy that exceeds NLP performance. Combining NLP with human adjudication can address this gap, yet few software solutions support such workflows. We developed a modular, scalable system for NLP-screened human abstraction to measure the primary outcomes of two clinical trials. METHODS: In two clinical trials of hospitalized patients with serious illness, a deep-learning NLP model sc

Validation of anorexia nervosa and Bulimia nervosa diagnosis coding in Danish hospitals assisted by a natural language processing model.

INTRODUCTION: The Danish Health Care Registers rely on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD)-classification and stand as a widely utilized resource for health epidemiological research. Eating disorders are multifaceted syndromes where two distinctive diagnoses are defined, anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). However, the validity of the registered diagnoses remains to be verified. Manuel chart review is often the method for validation of diagnosis codes, but there is limited research on how natural language processing (NLP) model
