Delayed drug-induced catatonia in an adolescent girl-clinical implications: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is a potentially life-threatening condition that is characterized by psychiatric and motor disturbances, such as negativism, hypomotility, bradykinesia, and unusual movements. The diagnosis is based on clinical examination and occurs in both pediatric and adult patients and is associated with an increased mortality. Catatonia is associated with psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, major depression, encephalitis, and bipolar disorder. The physiopathology of catatonia is complex and not fully understood. There is an ongoing debate in the medical community whether ca

A unique presentation of Graves' disease in a pregnant woman with severe hypothyroidism.

BackgroundGraves' disease occurrence during pregnancy is not a frequent event, showing an incidence of 0.2-0.4% in unselected pregnant women. Depending on their functional properties, TSH-receptor antibodies can induce hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Recognizing the signs of altered thyroid function is essential to prevent possible complications on the fetus.Materials and methodsThe case of a pregnant woman without previous history of thyroid disease presenting with severe overt hypothyroidism during the first trimester is reported. Levothyroxine therapy was started and 6 weeks later overt

Oral delivery of Brucella spp. recombinant protein U-Omp16 abrogates the IgE-mediated milk allergy.

Food allergies are increasingly common disorders and no therapeutic strategies are yet approved. The unlipidated Omp16 (U-Omp16) is the outer membrane protein of 16 kDa from B. abortus and possesses a mucosal adjuvant property. In this study, we aimed to examine the U-Omp16 capacity to abrogate an allergen-specific Th2 immune response when it is administered as an oral adjuvant in a mouse model of food allergy.   Balb/c mice were sensitized with cholera toxin and cow's milk proteins (CMP) by gavage and simultaneously treated with U-Omp16 and CMP. Oral challenge with CMP was performed to evalua

[Treatment of spondylolisthesis. Operation in situ or repositioning spondylodesis].

The indication for operative treatment of spondylolisthesis in children and juvenile patients relies mainly on the progressive slipping of the vertebra, with consecutive deformation, on the other hand on neurological disorders, that may be seen as rigid lumbar extension with contractation of hip and knee joints. In the adult patient the main reason for treatment is the painful instability, often accompanied by root pain caused by degenerative changes as a result of repairment. The treatment consists of comlete reduction of the slipping vertebra, and reconstruction of the physiological lumbar l

Efficacy of the association of 13-cis-retinoic acid (13cRA) and alpha-interferon 2a (alpha-IFN 2a) in moderate-severe cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN II-III): a pilot study.

Recent in vitro studies have suggested a possible therapeutic synergism between alpha-IFN 2a and 13cRA in certain neoplasias, while encouraging in vivo findings strongly support the enhanced effectiveness of the two agents when used in combination. The specific aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy and the toxicity of the association of 13cRA and alpha-IFN 2a in patients with CIN II and CIN III who refused surgical treatment. Twenty-one patients (aged between 25 and 58 years), of which 14 were CIN II and 7 CIN III, entered the study. 13cRA (orally at 0.5-1 mg/Kg/day) and alpha-IFN 2a (

HPV DNA positivity and natural killer cell activity in the clinical outcome of mild cervical dysplasia: integration between virus and immune system.

The objective was to examine the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA infection in mild cervical dysplasia and to evaluate longitudinally the persistence of HPV DNA positivity in an observational study, aiming at identifying the role of peripheral blood lymphocyte natural killer activity in the natural history of dysplastic disease. Twenty-three patients with histologically proven mild cervical dysplasia were selected. The HPV DNA positivity, determined by polymerase chain reaction, and cervical dysplasia were monitored cytologically and colposcopically at the 3rd (time 1), 6th (time 2

Clinical and biological distinctions between catatonia due to a medical condition and catatonia associated with a psychiatric disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To identify differences between catatonia due to a medical condition (CMC) and catatonia associated with a psychiatric disorder (CPD) based on clinical, biological, and treatment features. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study spanning 20 years (2001-2021). Patients diagnosed with catatonia were categorized into CMC or CPD as per DSM-5 criteria. Study outcomes included (1) severity of catatonia at diagnosis, defined using the Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale (BFCRS) and Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S), (2) catatonia response to lorazepam, (3) time to dischar

Aggressive/hostile personality traits and injury accidents: an eight-year prospective study of a large cohort of French employees -- the GAZEL cohort.

BACKGROUND: Aggressiveness on the roads and/or anger behind the wheel are considered to be a major traffic safety problem in several countries. However, the psychological mechanisms of anger and/or aggression on the roads remain largely unclear. This study examines a large cohort of French employees followed over the period 1994-2001 to establish whether psychometric measures of aggression/hostility were significantly associated with an increased risk of an injury accident (I-A). An I-A was defined as a traffic accident in which someone was injured, that is required medical care. METHOD: A to

The role of negative interpretations of grief reactions in emotional problems after bereavement.

This study explored the role of negative interpretations of grief reactions in emotional problems after bereavement, with 234 individuals who had been confronted with the death of a close relative. It was found that negative interpretations of grief reactions were highly associated with the degree to which these reactions were experienced as distressing, the degree to which mourners engaged in avoidance behaviours and the severity of symptoms of traumatic grief and depression, even when controlling for the frequency of grief reactions and the influence of relevant background variables. Further

The addiction to negativity.

In this paper, we have described a type of resistance that has attracted increasing psychoanalytic attention in recent years. Patients exposed to intense negativity during early life may develop an addiction to negative experience as adolescents and adults, and this may constitute a central organizing feature of their personality. In almost all patients, however, some moments of negativity may be observed. We have traced the developmental origins of an attachment to negativity, drawing especially on psychoanalytic investigations of preoedipal pathology. Manifestations and derivatives of early

Examining a transdiagnostic measure of repetitive thinking in depressed, formerly depressed and never-depressed individuals.

BACKGROUND: Evidence that repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a shared feature of a number of disorders has prompted the need for transdiagnostic self-report instruments; that is, measures of RNT that can be administered to individuals irrespective of their diagnosis. The Repetitive Thinking Questionnaire (RTQ; McEvoy et al., 2010) was developed to meet this need, and its psychometric properties and capacity to predict psychopathology have been tested in undergraduate and clinically anxious samples. METHODS: We administered the RTQ to currently depressed (n = 29), formerly depressed (n = 61

Repetitive negative thinking predicts depression and anxiety symptom improvement during brief cognitive behavioral therapy.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a common symptom across depression and anxiety disorders and preliminary evidence suggests that decreases in rumination and worry are related to improvement in depression and anxiety symptoms. However, despite its prevalence, relatively little is known about transdiagnostic RNT and its temporal associations with symptom improvement during treatment. The current study was designed to examine the influence of RNT on subsequent depression and anxiety symptoms during treatment. Participants (n = 131; 52% female; 93% White; M = 34.76 years) were patients presen

Using the experience-based design approach to improve orthodontic care.

The experience-based design (ebd) approach is a method of measuring patient experience, which deliberately draws out subjective, emotional and personal feelings of the patients using a service. We describe how the experience-based design approach has been used to measure the experiences of teenage patients at orthodontic consultation appointments in a district general hospital. This has allowed us to identify the points in the patient's journey where they experience most anxiety and nervousness and to target service improvements in these areas. We found the ebd approach effective in measuring

Brief report: adolescents' co-rumination with mothers, co-rumination with friends, and internalizing symptoms.

The current research examined co-rumination (extensively discussing, rehashing, and speculating about problems) with mothers and friends. Of interest was exploring whether adolescents who co-ruminate with mothers were especially likely to co-ruminate with friends as well as the interplay among co-rumination with mothers, co-rumination with friends, and anxious/depressed symptoms. Early- to mid-adolescents (N = 393) reported on co-rumination and normative self-disclosure with mothers and friends and on their internalizing symptoms in this cross-sectional study. Co-rumination with mothers (but n

Lack of relations of hostility, negative affect, and high-risk behavior with low plasma lipid levels in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that low plasma cholesterol levels or cholesterol lowering may increase the risk of suicide and violent death. Increased aggression, risk-taking behavior, or depression has been associated with low cholesterol levels in some studies. METHODS: A total of 4240 subjects of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study, aged 23 to 35 years, were included in the study. Analyses were stratified by race (black or white) and sex. Persons in the lowest 10% of plasma total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein

Dissecting minimal residual disease dynamics to improve outcome prediction in mantle cell lymphoma: Data from the Fondazione Italiana Linfomi (FIL)-MCL0208 clinical trial.

Recent clinical trials have underscored the value of repeated minimal residual disease (MRD) measurements as a highly sensitive method for detecting subclinical disease and enabling dynamic risk stratification in hematologic malignancies. Despite its clinical potential, the complex and heterogeneous nature of MRD kinetics presents significant challenges for interpreting and integrating it into routine clinical decision-making. In this study, we present a comprehensive, model-based workflow for the longitudinal analysis of MRD trajectories designed to improve relapse risk prediction. We applied
