Evidence for nephrolithiasis preceding sarcoidosis diagnosis: findings from a Swedish case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with sarcoidosis have an increased risk for calcium metabolism disturbances, such as hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria. Previous studies suggest that nephrolithiasis (stone formation in the renal and ureter, often caused by dysregulated calcium balance) may occur long before sarcoidosis diagnosis and may be an early sign of not-yet-diagnosed sarcoidosis. We hypothesized that a history of nephrolithiasis is associated with future risk of sarcoidosis. METHODS: In this population-based matched case-control study, we included individuals with sarcoidosis and matched general po

Comparison of Radiation Exposure for Pregnant Patients Requiring Intervention for Suspected Obstructing Nephrolithiasis.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the differences in radiation exposure per suspected stone episode between percutaneous nephrostomy tube (PCN), stent, and primary ureteroscopy (URS).The incidence of nephrolithiasis in pregnancy is low; however, repercussions for both mother and fetus can be significant. In cases of suspected obstructing nephrolithiasis, intervention may be required, including ureteral stent, PCN, or URS, with the potential for multiple subsequent procedures that often utilize fluoroscopy. METHODS: Pregnant patients who required an intervention (stent, PCN, or URS) for suspected obstruc

Is oxidized low-density lipoprotein the connection between atherosclerosis, cardiovascular risk and nephrolithiasis?

Nephrolithiasis is considered a systemic disease. A link has been established between nephrolithiasis, cardiovascular disease (CVD), the metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis. A significant correlation has been found between the high levels of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) and CVD and atherosclerosis, including coronary and femoral artery disease. To the best of our knowledge, oxLDL has not been evaluated in patients with nephrolithiasis. This study aimed to evaluate serum levels of oxLDL, anti-oxLDL antibodies (oxLDL-ab) and other markers of atherosclerosis in patients with nephro

Carbonate apatite nephrolithiasis associated with Corynebacterium urealyticum urinary tract infection in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections caused by Corynebacterium urealyticum are uncommon in veterinary medicine. Encrusted cystitis, encrusted pyelitis and uroliths have been described as complications in humans, but only encrusted cystitis and cystoliths have been reported in dogs so far. Because C. urealyticum is usually resistant to all standard antibacterial drugs, antimicrobial treatment and elimination of this microorganism are challenging. CASE REPORT: An 11-month-old female spayed mixed-breed dog was evaluated because of a C. urealyticum urinary tract infection, mineralisation within b

Orthosiphon versus placebo in nephrolithiasis with multiple chronic complaints: a randomized control trial.

Nephrolithiasis in the communities of Northeast Thailand frequently presents with multiple chronic health complaints, i.e. myofascial pain, back pain, dyspepsia, arthralgia, headache, fatigue, frank paresthesia, dysuria and any of these aggravated by purine-rich food (PRF). We assessed the efficacy of Orthosiphon in treating subjects with at least two active symptoms and negative for urine white blood cells. Subjects were randomly allocated to two groups. Crude extract of Orthosiphon given in a capsule (equivalent to 1.6-1.8 g of dried leaves of Orthosiphon) two times a day to Group 1 (n = 36)

[Distal renal tubular acidosis and nephrolithiasis in 3 cases of primary Sjögren syndrome].

Tubulo interstitial nephritis, the main manifestation of renal involvement in Sjögren syndrome, may lead to a tubular dysfunction that is usually subclinical. We report three women, aged 32, 35 and 35 years old, with a primary Sjögren syndrome and symptomatic type I or distal tubular acidosis. Two patients had nephrolithiasis and one a nephrocalcinosis. Two had a basal hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis. The ammonium chloride acidification test was abnormal in all, demonstrating a distal tubular defect. None had proximal tubular dysfunction. All had an urinary pH over 6.5 and hypocitraturia and

Recurrent Nephrolithiasis in Congenital Cystinuria With a Complete Duplex Collecting System: A Case Report.

Cystinuria is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder that affects the reabsorption of cystine in the renal tubules. Although cysteine lithiasis is a rare form of nephrolithiasis, it typically presents early in life and is associated with a highly recurrent course and frequent need for repeated surgical interventions. The presence of a duplicated collecting system adds complexity, as it can hinder drainage and make endoscopic access more difficult. We report the case of a 16-year-old male patient with congenital cystinuria and a complete bilateral duplex collecting system. He presented wit

Nephrolithiasis and/or nephrocalcinosis is significantly related to renal dysfunction in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The present study compared the clinical features of patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) with and without nephrolithiasis and/or nephrocalcinosis to determine factors related to renal dysfunction. METHODS: The clinical features of 68 patients with anti-Sjogren's syndrome antigen A (SSA)/Ro-antibody-positive pSS with and without nephrolithiasis and/or nephrocalcinosis who underwent abdominal computed tomography and/or ultrasonography were retrospectively analysed. RESULTS: Of the 68 patients with anti-SSA-antibody-positive pSS, 23 (33%) had renal nephrolithiasis and/or ne

Analysis of Nephrolithiasis Treatment in Highest Reference Hospital-Occurrence of Acromegaly in the Study Group.

BACKGROUND: Urolithiasis is one of the most common diseases of the urinary system, the incidence of which is assumed to be up to 100,000 cases per million (10% of the population). The cause of it is dysregulation of renal urine excretion. Acromegaly is a very rare endocrine disorder that causes a somatotropic pituitary adenoma producing higher amounts of growth hormone. It occurs approximately in 80 cases per million (about 0.008% of the population). One of the acromegaly complications may be urolithiasis. METHODS: Clinical and laboratory results of 2289 patients hospitalized for nephrolithia

Development and validation of a nomogram for risk prediction of nephrolithiasis recurrence in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: Nephrolithiasis is a common complication of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), and the recurrence of nephrolithiasis in patients with PHPT is also an urgent concern. What is worse, there is a scarcity of recommended evaluation to predict the risk of nephrolithiasis recurrence in patients with PHPT. This study was aimed to develop and validate a nomogram to facilitate risk assessment in patients with PHPT. METHODS: A total of 197 patients with PHPT were retrospectively included in this study from September 2016 to August 2021. Patients' demographic data, blood test parameters, uri

Small-molecule inhibitor of intestinal anion exchanger SLC26A3 for treatment of hyperoxaluria and nephrolithiasis.

Nephrolithiasis is a common and recurrent disease affecting 9% of the US population. Hyperoxaluria is major risk factor for calcium oxalate kidney stones, which constitute two-thirds of all kidney stones. SLC26A3 (DRA, downregulated in adenoma) is an anion exchanger of chloride, bicarbonate, and oxalate thought to facilitate intestinal oxalate absorption, as evidenced by approximately 70% reduced urine oxalate excretion in knockout mice. We previously identified a small-molecule SLC26A3 inhibitor (DRAinh-A270) that selectively inhibited SLC26A3-mediated chloride/bicarbonate exchange (IC50 ~ 35

Hypercalciuria: its value as a predictive risk factor for nephrolithiasis in asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism?

CONTEXT: The latest guidelines of the 4th International Workshop on Asymptomatic Primary Hyperparathyroidism (aPHPT) reintroduced hypercalciuria (i.e. urinary calcium > 400 mg/day) as criterion for surgery. However, the value of hypercalciuria as a predictor of nephrolithiasis and the correct cut-off values still need to be confirmed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of silent kidney stones in a large series of patients with aPHPT and the sensibility, specificity and predictive value of different cut-off values of hypercalciuria in identifying patients with nephrolithiasis. DESIGN: One

Management of nephrolithiasis by pyelotomy and pyeloscopy in an Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus).

CASE DESCRIPTION: A captive adult sexually intact female Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) was evaluated because of diarrhea and signs of abdominal discomfort on arrival at the quarantine area of a zoological park. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations revealed the presence of a large nephrolith in the left kidney. Mild nephrolithiasis was detected in the right kidney. Results of hematologic and serum biochemical analyses were within references intervals. Intravenous pyelography was used for functional assessment of the urinary system and revealed normal re

Metabolic syndrome contributes to renal injury mediated by hyperoxaluria in a murine model of nephrolithiasis.

Metabolic syndrome (MS) individuals have a higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease through unclear pathogenic mechanisms. MS has been also related with higher nephrolithiasis prevalence. To establish the influence of MS on renal function, we designed a murine model of combined metabolic syndrome and hyperoxaluria. Four groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were established: (1) control group (n = 10) fed with standard chow; (2) stone former group (SF) (n = 10) fed with standard chow plus 0.75% ethylene glycol administered in the drinking water; (3) metabolic syndrome group (MS) (n = 10),

Incidence of and risk factors for nephrolithiasis in patients with gout and the general population, a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Nephrolithiasis (NL) is known to be associated with gout, although there are few comparative studies on risk and risk factors for NL in gout compared to population cohorts. In this cohort study we investigated: (1) overall incidence of NL in gout (cases) and general population controls; (2) risk and risk factors (common comorbidities and medications) for first-time NL in cases and controls separately. METHODS: Cases (n = 29,968) and age-matched and sex-matched controls (n = 138,678) were identified from the regional healthcare database in western Sweden (VEGA). The analyzed risk f
