Flail arm syndrome patients exhibit profound abnormalities in nerve conduction: an electromyography study.

Flail arm syndrome (FAS) is a rare degenerative disease of the nervous system and a variant of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In the current study, we sought to further delineate electromyographic changes in sensory and motor conduction of the median nerve in four FAS patients and also described one representative case of FAS in a 63-year old Chinese male patient who was admitted because of aggravating limb myasthenia for three months. Electromyography showed that FAS patients exhibited variable electromyographic changes in sensory conduction of the median nerve. Abnormal conduction velo

Effect of Elbow Position on Short-segment Nerve Conduction Study in Cubital Tunnel Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The appropriate elbow position of short-segment nerve conduction study (SSNCS) to diagnose cubital tunnel syndrome (CubTS) is still controversial. The goal of this study was to determine the effect of different elbow positions at full extension and 70° flexion on SSNCS in CubTS. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the clinical data of seventy elbows from 59 CubTS patients between September, 2011 and December, 2014 in the Peking University First Hospital were included as CubTS group. Moreover, thirty healthy volunteers were included as the healthy group. SSNCS were conducted in

A cross-sectional study on nerve conduction velocities among workers exposed to carbon disulphide.

We examined nerve conduction velocities (NCVs) in the ulnar nerve (motor, slower motor fiber and mixed), the peroneal nerve (motor, MCV) and the sural nerve (sensory, SCV) among 46 Japanese workers exposed to carbon disulphide (CS2, CS2-exposed group) and 28 normal control workers (group C). The subjects had not suffered from diseases or injuries of the peripheral or central nervous system. MCV in the peroneal nerve and SCV in the sural sural nerve in the CS2-exposed group were significantly reduced compared with those of group C (p < 0.05 in both), but no significant difference in NCVs of the

Liverpool carpal tunnel scoring system to predict nerve conduction study results: A prospective correlation study.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common peripheral nerve compressive neuropathies. The clinical symptoms and physical examinations of CTS are widely recognised, however, there is still debate around what is the best approach for assessment of CTS. Clinical assessment is still considered the gold standard, however, controversies do exist regarding the need for investigations such nerve conduction studies (NCS) to aid with management decisions. AIM: To correlate the severity of NCS results to a scoring system which included symptoms, signs and risk factors. METHODS:

Wrist Flexor Spasticity and Hemiplegic-Contralateral Median Nerve Latency Asymmetry After Stroke: A Bilateral Nerve Conduction and Ultrasound Study.

Background/Objectives: The paretic wrist after stroke may exhibit median nerve conduction abnormalities, but factors underlying hemiplegic-contralateral asymmetry remain uncertain. We compared electrodiagnostic and ultrasonographic wrist measures between sides and assessed predictors of side-to-side differences in distal motor latency (ΔDML) and distal sensory latency (ΔDSL). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 85 patients with stroke. Distal motor latency (DML), distal sensory latency (DSL), wrist-to-forearm ratio (WFR), and median nerve inlet cross-sectional area (CSA) were measured bilater

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: A Clinical Study Correlating Peripheral Neuropathy with Dyslipidemia and Nerve Conduction Velocity Study in Diabetics.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most common and debilitating complications of diabetes mellitus, affecting approximately 50% of patients with long-standing disease. While hyperglycemia is the primary driver of nerve damage, emerging evidence suggests that dyslipidemia may also contribute significantly to the development and progression of neuropathy. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical profile, lipid abnormalities, and nerve conduction patterns in patients with DPN and to explore the potential correlations between these parameters. METHODOLOGY: This cros

Proximal Median Nerve Conduction Velocity Slowing in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: An Observational Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy, characterised by compression of the median nerve at the wrist. Traditional understanding views CTS as a distal compression issue, but recent evidence suggests potential proximal involvement. PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of proximal median nerve conduction velocity (CV) slowing in CTS patients and examine its association with CTS severity. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, data were analysed from 80 CTS patients and 40 controls from the Electrophysiology Lab at a tertiary

Assessing Nerve Conduction Velocity as a Diagnostic and Prognostic Indicator in Leprosy Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Hansen's disease is a condition in which patients develop peripheral neuropathy. In 1873, G. H. A. Hansen discovered Mycobacterium leprae, the causative agent of leprosy, a chronic infectious disease. These bacteria influence the peripheral nerves, which is likely to cause neuropathy. Sensory nerve conduction studies were performed in leprosy patients on the upper limb nerves of 30 patients in the rural area of the Wardha district in the Indian population. Methods In this study, we recruited 30 leprosy patients from the Department of Dermatology and A.V.B.R. Hospital, Sawangi Ward

Characteristics of forearm mixed nerve conduction study in carpal tunnel syndrome: Comparison with ultrasound assessments.

This study aimed to characterize forearm mixed nerve conduction study (NCS) findings in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Eighty-two patients with CTS and 48 healthy controls were enrolled. We directly compared the forearm mixed NCS and ultrasonography results from CTS patients with those from the controls. Correlation analyses were performed to identify the relationship between forearm mixed NCS parameters and ultrasound measurements in CTS. We observed reduced forearm mixed nerve amplitude and increased cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve at the proximal carpal tunnel (CT) inlet in CT

Nerve conduction study and electromyography findings in patients recovering from Covid-19 - Case report.

• Three patients with recent sequelae after Corona Virus Disease (COVID)-19 such as fatigue and myalgia of both calves underwent electrophysiological examinations, nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG). NCS shows, as common elements, the presence of a partial or complete conduction block on several nerves, slightly prolonged latency of the tibial nerve, and rare or absent F-waves, all suggesting a demyelinating polyneuropathy due to SARS−COV-2. The short duration and low amplitude of the motor unit action potential with early full recruitment on interference pattern on EMG,

A study to further develop and refine carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) nerve conduction grading tool.

BACKGROUND: The severity of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) may be categorised in a number of ways utilising one of a range of presently available grading tools. The grading systems proposed by Bland and Padua are the most commonly used, however, both have limitations, which are discussed in detail in this paper. The aim of this research is to establish, using the best available evidence, a clinically appropriate revision of the current CTS nerve conduction grading tool, and to compare with existing grading tools used in UK Neurophysiology clinics. The revised scale is designed from a clinical ph
