BACKGROUND: Adrenal primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is an extremely rare malignant tumor with poor prognosis and of neural crest origin. Herein, we report a case of adrenal PNET and summarized its clinical and pathological characteristics on the basis of 16 patients reported recently.
CASE SUMMARY: A female patient aged 25 years presented with right lumbago for 12 mo, and pre-operative computed tomography showed a huge right adrenal mass. She received tumorectomy, and post-operative pathological examination showed adrenal PNET. After surgery, she underwent adjuvant chemotherapy and was

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is characterized by necrotizing polyangiitis involving the respiratory tract and kidneys. It causes segmental necrotizing glomerulonephritis in the kidneys. In rare cases, a renal pseudotumor may be seen because of the granulomatous process. Association of WG with renal malignancy, however, is very uncommon. We report a case of a patient who presented several years after being treated for WG with malignant hypertension and an infiltrating mass in the right kidney. The histopathology of radical nephrectomy specimen showed presence of primitive neuroectodermal tumor

A 24-year-old woman who had melena, dizziness, and fatigue and looked pale for 2 months was confirmed to have a microcytic hypochromic anemia in the local hospital. It was further revealed that the patient had splenomegaly and a small intestinal lump, and she was then referred to our hospital. The enhanced CT showed an ileal lesion with enhancement, which showed an increased F-FDG activity in further PET/CT scanning. Lymphoma was therefore suspected, and an uncomplicated surgical resection of the ileal lesion was then performed. Nevertheless, the histopathologic and immunohistochemical examina

Primary Ewing sarcoma / primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES) of the kidney is a rare neoplasm with limited clinicopathologic data. We report 23 such cases with no history of ES elsewhere in the body. The patients included 13 male and 10 female, aged 8-70 years (mean, 31 years). The average tumor size was 11.7 cm (range, 5-20 cm). Microscopic analysis showed predominantly lobular growth (n = 14), with focal papillary (n = 3), alveolar (n = 1), and hemangiopericytoma-like (n = 1) patterns. Several tumors (n = 11) exhibited robust mitotic activity (>10 mitoses/10 high-power fields). Necrosis (n =

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy is a rare benign tumor of neural crest origin. The tumor generally presents in the jawbones; however, it occasionally occurs in extracranial sites. Although 95% of these tumors present within the first year of life and 15% in extracranial locations, we report an unusual case of a 15-month-old male with melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy of the epididymis. The patient underwent orchiectomy without adjuvant chemotherapy or radiation. Twenty months later, there was no sign of recurrence. In addition, we discuss the role of chemotherapy and radiat

BACKGROUND: Primary diffuse leptomeningeal primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PDL PNET) is extremely rare, with only 19 cases reported in the literature to date. We present a case of a child with rapidly progressive PDL PNET and a literature review. A 10-year-old boy presented with mood lability, hallucinations, generalized pain, enuresis, and headaches. Initial investigation failed to produce a diagnosis. The symptoms progressed to seizure, back pain, and papilledema. Imaging showed acute hydrocephalus and mild diffuse leptomeningeal enhancement without an identifiable primary lesion.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET), which belongs to the Ewing's sarcoma (ES) family of tumors, is mainly seen in children and young adults. PNETs are extremely rare in the maxilla. Here, we report a case of PNET of the left maxillary sinus in an elderly male. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a slightly enhanced solid mass occupying the left maxillary sinus and infiltrating into the retroantral space. A partial maxillectomy was performed. Despite postoperative chemotherapy, follow-up computed tomography (CT) and MRI revealed a nodal metastasis in the submandibular space. Neck diss

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare congenital neoplasm that originates from the neural crest cells, which give rise to the melanocytes of the skin and leptomeninges. We report a case of MNTI with neurocutaneous melanosis of a 28-month-old girl. She was born with hydrocephalus and several large congenital giant nevi. There were no findings except for hydrocephalus, after a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt operation performed when she was 6 months old. She was operated on for a growing inguinal mass at 8 months. The specimen from the inguinal sac was positive for HMB45, v

Embryonal brain tumors, which include medulloblastoma and the more aggressive supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (sPNET), comprise one of the largest group of malignant pediatric brain tumors. We observed in high resolution array comparative genomic hybridization and polymerase chain reaction analyses that several different components of the CDK/CYCLIND/pRB regulatory complex, including the CDK4/6 and CCND1/2 loci, are targets of gene amplification in medulloblastoma and sPNET. CDK6 and CCND1 gene amplification were respectively most common and robust, and overall CDK/CYCLIND gene

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical manifestations, pathological characteristics and treatment of primitive neuroectodermal tumor/Ewing's sarcoma (PNET/EWS) of the penis in children.
METHODS: We analyzed the clinical data of a case of PNET/EWS and reviewed relevant literature.
RESULTS: The patient was a 5-year-old boy, admitted for penis swelling with pain for 11 months. Biopsy showed a small round cell tumor, CD99 positive by immunohistochemical staining, with EWS translocation by fluorescence in situ hybridization on molecular biological examination. The tumor was confirmed to be PNET/E

Central nervous system primitive neuroectodermal tumor (CNS PNET) and pineoblastoma are highly malignant embryonal brain tumors with poor prognoses. Current therapies are based on the treatment of pediatric medulloblastoma, even though these tumors are distinct at both the anatomical and molecular level. CNS PNET and pineoblastoma have a worse clinical outcome than medulloblastoma; thus, improved therapies based on an understanding of the underlying biology of CNS PNET and pineoblastoma are needed. To this end, we characterized the genomic alterations of 36 pediatric CNS PNETs and 8 pineoblast

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (S-PNET) that develop in children have recently been classified into two types: central-type PNET (C-PNET), which has been reported over the years, and peripheral-type PNET (P-PNET), which develops intracranially and was referred to as Ewing's sarcoma in the past. P-PNET is fundamentally a malignant tumor, but the patient reported here represents a case of long-term survival from onset without recurrence. At the age of 21 months, a male infant developed a cranial bone deformity and symptoms of high intracranial pressure. A CT scan revealed a cyst

A 7-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital because of headache and frequent vomiting. The patient was noted to have papilloedema and mild palsy of the right abducent nerve. Magnetic resonance image (MRI) revealed a large tumor in the frontal base with tumoral hemorrhage. Angiography showed the tumor was fed by anterior meningeal arteries. At surgery, the tumor was arising in the dura mater at the frontal base, and was removed totally. Histological examination showed the tumor to be composed of small cells with uniform round nuclei and minimal cytoplasm. Immunohistochemical studies were posi

Over a 12-year period, the authors encountered 2 patients with spinal axis/basimeningeal primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) involving the spinal axis extramedullary, intradural compartment and the basimeninges. In neither patient was an intraaxial focus demonstrated. A 48-year-old woman had computed tomography (CT) findings of hydrocephalus and later abnormal basimeningeal enhancement. Cervical myelography revealed a low cervical intradural block. A 10-year-old boy was evaluated initially with non-contrast-enhanced CT of the brain, which revealed hydrocephalus. Contrast-enhanced CT reveale

A rare case of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy involving the right occipital bone in an 11-month-old infant is described. The bone tumor and its dural extension were surgically removed. Three-dimensional reconstruction of the tumor and brain from neuroimaging data added worthwhile information for preoperative planning. Microscopic examination revealed melanotic and neuroblastic tissue in a fibrillary matrix involving the expanded bone and superficial dura. A focal osteoblastic cranial mass in an infant should alert the clinician to consider this tumor.

Immunohistochemical lack of nuclear INI1 protein expression has been recently described as characteristic finding in atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RTs), and has been suggested as useful marker to distinguish AT/RTs from other malignant pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors. In this study, we examined a large series of malignant pediatric CNS tumors to determine the immunohistochemical expression of INI1 protein in different malignant pediatric tumor entities. Archival paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens of 289 malignant pediatric CNS tumors including medulloblastomas, supratento

BACKGROUND: Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (sPNET) is a malignant brain tumor with poor prognosis. New model systems that replicate sPNET's molecular subtype(s) and maintain cancer stem cell (CSC) pool are needed.
METHODS: A fresh surgical specimen of a pediatric sPNET was directly injected into the right cerebrum of Rag2/SCID mice. The xenograft tumors were serially sub-transplanted in mouse brains, characterized histopathologically, and subclassified into molecular subtype through qRT-PCR and immunohistochemical analysis. CSCs were identified through flow cytometric profilin

This report describes the clinical, pathological, immunohistochemical and genetic data of two rare malignant neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS)--a cerebral atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT) in a 5-month-old girl and a spinal canal primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) in her father. Despite aggressive treatment, both tumors were fatal, displaying extensive local recurrence and diffuse neoplastic dissemination. The paraffin-embedded tumor tissue samples were analyzed using a dual-color FISH with a locus specific LSI22q (BCR) probe. In the AT/RT tissue, a loss of BCR locus was

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor/Ewing sarcoma (PN/ES) is a single clinical, morphologic, and molecular small round cell tumor entity. These are generally found in deep soft tissue or bone of young male patients, with poor behavior. Location in dermis is unexpected; only rare cases are reported. Cases coded as "dermal," "cutaneous," or "skin" PN/ES were retrieved from our consultation files. Only primary dermal cases were included. Those otherwise diagnosed or with incomplete material were excluded. There were 13 dermal PN/ES cases, consisting of 10 women and 3 men. Ages ranged from 2 to 67 yea
