Para-occupational exposure to chemical substances: a systematic review.

Today, many health problems related to work have overshadowed workers and their families. In the meantime, chemicals are among the risk factors that have created many problems due to para-occupational exposure. In para-occupational exposures, family members are exposed to work pollutants transferred to the home environment. This study was conducted to investigate para-occupational exposure to chemicals. To conduct this systematic review, databases such as "Web of Science", "Google Scholar", "Scopus", and "SID" were used. Relevant articles in these databases were extracted by searching keywords

Association Between Occupational Exposure to Formaldehyde and Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To our knowledge, no study has investigated the effect of exposure to formaldehyde on cognition in the general population. Our objective was to examine the association between occupational exposure to formaldehyde and cognitive impairment in middle-aged and young-old adults (≥45 years). METHODS: In the French CONSTANCES cohort, cognitive function was assessed with a standardized battery of 7 cognitive tests to evaluate global cognitive function, episodic verbal memory, language abilities, and executive functions (e.g., Digit Symbol Substitution Test [DSST]). A globa

Environmental Contamination and Occupational Exposure of Algerian Hospital Workers.

Guidelines are in place to assure limited occupational exposure to cytostatic drugs. Even though this has led to a reduction in exposure, several studies reported quantifiable concentrations of these compounds in healthcare workers. In this study, we evaluated occupational exposure to cytostatic drugs in hospital workers from the University Hospital in Tlemcen, Algeria. Monitoring was performed by collecting wipe samples from surfaces, objects, personal protective equipment (gloves and masks) and from the skin of employees at an Algerian university hospital. Wipe samples were analyzed with ult

Occupational silica exposure in an Australian systemic sclerosis cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of self-reported occupational exposure to silica in SSc patients enrolled in the Australian Scleroderma Cohort Study, and to compare the disease characteristics of the silica-exposed patients with those of the non-exposed patients. METHOD: Data collected over a 12-year period from 1670 SSc patients were analysed. We compared the demographic and clinical characteristics of those who reported occupational silica exposure with those who did not. A subgroup analysis of male patients was performed, as well as a multivariable analysis of correlates of silica ex

Quantitative olfactory disorders and occupational exposure to phenolic resins.

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether exposure to phenolic resins (PR) is associated with quantitative olfactory disorders (QOD), a cross-sectional study of self-reported olfactory impairment (SROI) was performed in occupationally exposed subjects. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-six workers (45 males, 21 females) at the age (mean ± standard deviation) of 39.8±10.15 years old were divided into 3 exposure groups on the basis of biological exposure indices (BEI) for urinary phenols. It was asked whether the sense of smell has been normal or abnormal during the recent 2 months: the participants were ev

Association Between Kidney Cancer and Occupational Exposure to Trichloroethylene.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the association between occupational exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) and kidney cancer, as this correlation has been questioned. METHODS: The incidence of cancers was studied in a dynamic cohort of 997 male workers who for many years had been occupationally exposed to TCE. RESULTS: During a 50-year observation period, 13 cases of kidney cancer were observed (7.5 expected) with a standardized incidence ratio of 1.7 and a 95% confidence interval of 1.0 to 3.0. Four other cases, not included in the SIR analysis, were also observed. Long-term TCE exposure w

Unilateral hand allergic contact dermatitis due to occupational exposure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hand dermatitis is the most common subtype of occupation-related skin disease. Regardless of its underlying cause, hand dermatitis results in significant impairment and a negative impact on quality of life. Any case of unilateral hand dermatitis should have a high index of suspicion for an allergic contact dermatitis. CONCLUSION: We report two cases of unilateral hand dermatitis. The first case is a 53-year-old female with a unilateral dermatitis of the left hand. The second case is a 53-year-old male with dermatitis of the right hand. Both cases highlight an interes

Chemical markers of occupational exposure to teak wood dust.

A novel high-performance liquid chromatographic/ultraviolet method was developed to detect lapachol (LP) and deoxylapachol (DLP) in wood dust as chemical markers of teak wood (a suspected human carcinogen). The specificity of this analysis was determined by noting the absence of LP and DLP in 12 other specimens of different woods belonging to the angiosperm family. The consistency was examined by analyzing teak from three different sources, where the percentages (wt/wt) of the chemicals ranged from 0.006 to 0.261 for LP and from 0.038 to 0.497 for DLP, respectively. Although the LP and DLP com

Dupuytren's contracture and occupational exposure to hand-transmitted vibration.

AIMS: The relation between Dupuytren's contracture and occupational exposure to hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) has frequently been debated. We explored associations in a representative national sample of workers with well-characterised exposure to HTV. METHODS: We mailed a questionnaire to 21 201 subjects aged 16-64 years, selected at random from the age-sex registers of 34 general practices in Great Britain and to 993 subjects chosen randomly from military pay records, asking about occupational exposure to 39 sources of HTV and about fixed flexion contracture of the little or ring finger.

Respiratory morbidity induced by occupational inhalation exposure to formaldehyde.

The potential of formaldehyde to produce chronic respiratory tract disease remains a controversial issue. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the respiratory effects, if any, of long term occupational exposure to formaldehyde. This cross-sectional study was carried out at a local melamine-formaldehyde resin producing plant. The study population consisted of seventy exposed and 24 non-exposed (referent) employees. Using respiratory questionnaire, data on respiratory symptoms were gathered. Atmospheric concentrations of formaldehyde were measured at different contaminated areas of

Maternal occupational exposure and risk of specific birth defects.

BACKGROUND: Gregg identified the teratogenic effect of maternal rubella infection in 1941 and since then there has been a focus on risk factors for birth defects. In nearly 70% of all birth defects, there is still no known risk factor and close to 30% of all pregnancies end in a foetal loss or spontaneous abortion, often because of a defect in the foetus. A large percentage of the workforce consists of women of reproductive age. METHODS: A search in MEDLINE for original literature and examination of the association between exposure during pregnancy and the risk of birth defects. RESULTS: Fiv
