A Consideration of Optimal Head Position in Transsylvian Selective Amygdalohippocampectomy.

Transsylvian selective amygdalohippocampectomy (TSA) is one of the predominant surgical options for drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. The purpose of this article is to highlight the unique features of TSA and determine the setting to perform safe and secure TSA with special reference to the optimal head position. TSA should be performed via a small surgical corridor in the temporal stem that contains functionally important fiber tracts, including the uncinate fasciculus, the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, and the optic radiation. Graphical simulations proposed that low-degre

Deep penetrating orbitocerebral steel spring injury with minimal sequelae: a case report.

The authors report a penetrating orbitocerebral steel mattress spring injury without permanent ophthalmic or neurologic sequelae. A 44-year-old female mattress factory worker sustained an injury to her right orbit by a high-velocity projectile foreign body. Imaging revealed a metallic spring in the right orbit traversing the optic nerve and superior orbital fissure and lodging in the temporal lobe of the brain. Cerebral angiography demonstrated the steel coil around, but not damaging, the middle cerebral artery and other vessels. With a combined craniotomy and frontal orbitotomy, the spring wa

Generalized Optical Design of the Double-Row Circular Multi-Pass Cell.

A new design of circular multi-pass cells (CMPC) with two rows of reflection spots on mirrors is presented. The effective optical path length (OPL) of this novel CMPC is double that of traditional CMPC with the same diameter and interval of spots. This OPL can be readily adjusted to have regular intervals by rough rotation adjustment. We achieved a spatial separation of pre- and post-transfer optical systems that was adequately large even in the cases with a large number of passes. Analytical chief ray tracing analysis and a generalized method for parameter determination for designing the cell

Design, construction, and validation of a rotary multifunctional intravascular diagnostic catheter combining multispectral fluorescence lifetime imaging and intravascular ultrasound.

We report the development and validation of an intravascular rotary catheter for bimodal interrogation of arterial pathologies. This is based on a point-spectroscopy scanning time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy technique enabling reconstruction of fluorescence lifetime images (FLIm) and providing information on arterial intima composition and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) providing information on arterial wall morphology. The catheter design allows for independent rotation of the ultrasonic and optical channels within an 8 Fr outer diameter catheter sheath and integrates a low volume flu

Dual wavefront sensing channel monocular adaptive optics system for accommodation studies.

Manipulation of the eye's aberrations using adaptive optics (AO) has shown that optical imperfections can affect the dynamic accommodation response. A limitation of current system designs used for such studies is an inability to make direct measurements of the eye's aberrations during the experiment. We present an AO system which has a dual wavefront sensing channel. The corrective device is a 37-actuator piezoelectric deformable mirror. The measurements used to control the mirror, and direct measurements of the eye's aberrations, are captured on a single Shack-Hartmann sensor. Other features

Parapapillary Beta Zone and Gamma Zone in a Healthy Population: The Beijing Eye Study 2011.

PURPOSE: To assess prevalence and size of the parapapillary beta zone and gamma zone in a healthy population. METHODS: Within the population-based Beijing Eye Study, individuals without retinal or optic nerve disease were selected. Using optical coherence tomography (OCT), we measured the parapapillary beta zone (defined by presence of Bruch's membrane and absence of RPE) and gamma zone (region between Bruch's membrane end and optic disc border). RESULTS: The study included 723 individuals (mean age: 59.5 ± 7.6 years; range: 50-90 years). The beta zone was detected in 525 eyes (72.6%; 95% co

Regional Position and Axonal Environment Shape Astrocyte Morphology in the Mouse Optic Projection.

Optic neuropathies encompass a diverse group of disorders that result in damage to the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. Despite the initial site of damage often being injury specific, we have an incomplete understanding of how differential regional susceptibility arises. Recent studies have implicated astrocytes in this phenomenon in mice, showing regional transcriptional heterogeneity in optic nerve astrocytes in response to glaucoma and optic nerve crush. Because astrocytes provide structural support and protection from tissue deformation, we examined the length of the optic nerve for as

Biomechanical comparison of different double plate constructs for distal supracondylar comminuted femur fractures (AO/OTA 33-A3).

INTRODUCTION: Dual plating for distal femoral fractures, especially with a metaphyseal comminution, is biomechanically superior compared to single lateral plating, promotes fracture union and prevents complications. However, the optimal placement and length of the additional medial plate are still unknown. Thus, we aimed to biomechanically compare three different double plate constructs for distal femoral fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A distal femoral fracture with a metaphyseal comminution (AO/OTA 33-A3) was created in synthetic femora and stabilized according to the following groups of

Kinematic Alterations After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction via Transtibial Techniques With Medial Meniscal Repair Versus Partial Medial Meniscectomy.

BACKGROUND: The treatment strategies for meniscal injuries during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction remain a topic of debate. HYPOTHESIS: After ACL reconstruction, knee kinematics would be affected by different medial meniscal treatment (partial medial meniscectomy [PMM] and medial meniscal repair [MMR]). STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: A total of 161 patients underwent primary single-bundle ACL reconstruction and simultaneous medial meniscal treatment. Of these, 32 patients were eligible to participate in the kinematic assessment at 24.8 ± 1.7 months after

Quantification of Increase in Three-dimensional Spine Flexibility Following Sequential Ponte Osteotomies in a Cadaveric Model.

BACKGROUND: Posterior-only procedures are becoming more popular for treatment of rigid adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, but little is known about the quantitative correction potential for Ponte osteotomies. The objective of this study was to quantify and compare the range of motion of intact multilevel thoracic spine segments with the same segments after each of 3 sequential Ponte osteotomies. METHODS: We tested 5 human cadaveric thoracic spine segments, spanning T-T6, or T7-T12, in an 8-degree-of-freedom servo-hydraulic load frame, monitoring motion of each vertebra with an optical motion tr

Comparisons of 2D IR measured spectral diffusion in rotating frames using pulse shaping and in the stationary frame using the standard method.

Multidimensional visible spectroscopy using pulse shaping to produce pulses with stable controllable phases and delays has emerged as an elegant tool to acquire electronic spectra faster and with greatly reduced instrumental and data processing errors. Recent migration of this approach using acousto-optic modulator (AOM) pulse shaping to the mid-infrared region has proved useful for acquiring two dimensional infrared (2D IR) vibrational echo spectra. The measurement of spectral diffusion in 2D IR experiments hinges on obtaining accurate 2D line shapes. To date, pulse shaping 2D IR has not been

Solvent-triggered reconfiguration of optical physical unclonable functions.

Optical physical unclonable functions provide artificial fingerprints through randomized light-matter interactions, but are limited by static architectures that lack adaptive defense capabilities. Although reconfigurable optical physical unclonable functions based on phase-change materials have been proposed to overcome this constraint, their reliance on light or heat makes them susceptible to unintended environmental activation. Here, we propose a solvent-triggered reconfiguration strategy for optical physical unclonable functions based on polymeric microcube arrays confined within square mic

Groove-Based Calibration of Multicore Fiber Bragg Grating Shape Sensors with Rotation-Angle Correction.

Fiber-optic shape sensors require accurate calibration of the spatial orientation and effective core distances of their sensing planes. We present a rotation-angle correction procedure for sinusoidal calibration of multicore fiber Bragg grating (MCF-FBG) shape sensors. The method is demonstrated using a constant-radius groove template and a single rotation stage. Within the groove fixture, groove-fiber friction, finite torsional stiffness, and non-ideal boundary conditions may contribute to deviations between the local sensor-plane rotation and the motor-imposed angle, resulting in distorted s

Model-based cardiac field artefact correction for OP-MEG.

Each heartbeat creates an electro-magnetic field that propagates throughout the body and is superimposed on measured brain activity in electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings. Being several orders of magnitude larger than a typical evoked response in the brain, the Cardiac Field Artefact (CFA) is especially problematic in studies where cortical activity time locked to the cardiac cycle is of interest, such as in interoception research. In this work, we develop a model-based CFA correction method, which exploits the fact that the magnetic field propagates relati

Photo-Activated Emission and Chirality Transfer Based on Host-Guest Chemistry of a Motorized All-Benzene Nanohoop.

In this study, a series of motorized carbon nanohoops M[8]CPP, M[9]CPP and M[11]CPP are designed. Transient absorption (TA) spectra reveal these cyclic motors exhibit unprecedented acceleration of rotary speed upon incorporation into an all-benzene macrocyclic stator, which is attributed to ring strain induced decrease of the steric hindrance at the fjord region. Especially, M[8]CPP realizes 107-fold increase of the rotation speed compared with the noncyclic motor. Such high rotation speed leads to the fluorescence quenching of the motorized carbon nanohoops. Interestingly, M[11]CPP possesses

Development of a Rotation-Robust PPG Sensor for a Smart Ring.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of global mortality, highlighting the need for continuous vital sign monitoring. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is well suited for wearable devices. Smart rings, benefiting from dense capillary distribution and minimal tissue interference, can capture high-quality PPG signals with comfort, making them a promising next-generation wearable. However, ring rotation relative to the finger alters the optical path, especially for multi-wavelength light, thus reducing accuracy. This paper proposes a rotation-robust PPG sensor for smart rings. Gait Characterization and Analysis of Hereditary Amyloidosis Associated with Transthyretin Patients: A Case Series.

Hereditary amyloidosis associated with transthyretin (ATTRv), is a rare autosomal dominant disease characterized by length-dependent symmetric polyneuropathy that has gait impairment as one of its consequences. The gait pattern of V30M ATTRv amyloidosis patients has been described as similar to that of diabetic neuropathy, associated with steppage, but has never been quantitatively characterized. In this study we aim to characterize the gait pattern of patients with V30M ATTRv amyloidosis, thus providing information for a better understanding and potential for supporting diagnosis and disease

Comparison of dosimetric parameters and robustness for rotational errors in fractionated stereotactic irradiation using automated noncoplanar volumetric modulated arc therapy for patients with brain metastases: single- versus multi-isocentric technique.

To compare the dosimetric parameters of automated noncoplanar volumetric modulated arc therapy plans using single-isocentric (SIC) and multi-isocentric (MIC) techniques for patients with two brain metastases (BMs) in stereotactic irradiation and to evaluate the robustness of rotational errors. The SIC and MIC plans were retrospectively generated (35 Gy/five fractions) for 58 patients. Subsequently, a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis between the tumor surface distance (TSD) and V25Gy was performed to determine the thresholds for the brain tissue. The SIC and MIC plans were recal

Rotating a petavoxel reconstruction exposes the viewing angle bias inherent to Golgi-Cox and confocal dendritic spine classification.

Dendritic spines are the principal postsynaptic sites of excitatory transmission. For over a century, their shape has been sorted into discrete categories such as filopodia, thin, long-thin, stubby, mushroom, and branched, largely by Golgi-Cox impregnation and, more recently, confocal microscopy. Yet both approaches share a fundamental limitation. Here, using the human H01 petavoxel reconstruction imaged by electron microscopy, we show that spine shape classification depends strongly on viewing angle. A total of 445 spines on layer 4 basal dendrites of five pyramidal neurons were classified fr
