Dimensional accuracy of computer-aided design/computer-assisted manufactured orbital prostheses.

PURPOSE: The aim of this research was to assess the dimensional accuracy of orbital prostheses based on reversed images generated by computer-aided design/computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM) using computed tomography (CT) scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT scans of the faces of 15 adults, men and women older than 25 years of age not bearing any congenital or acquired craniofacial defects, were processed using CAD software to produce 30 reversed three-dimensional models of the orbital region. These models were then processed using the CAM system by means of selective laser sintering to gen

Orbital hyperostosis following exenteration.

PURPOSE: To report the development of unilateral, diffuse hyperostosis of orbital bones in 3 postexenteration patients. METHODS: Three advanced cases of periorbital and orbital malignancies are presented, and their clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features are reviewed. RESULTS: Postexenteration CT showed thickened orbital walls in all 3 cases. The histopathology revealed necrotic destruction of the trabeculae mixed with randomly distributed chronic inflammatory cells and fibrosis and inflamed overlying granulation tissue. CONCLUSION: The delayed healing of the granulation tissue d

Palpebro-orbital myiasis in a patient with basal cell carcinoma.

PURPOSE: We report a patient with basal cell carcinoma presenting with severe myiasis in a large ulcer involving the upper and lower eyelid. METHODS: Myiasis is an infestation of vertebrate animals by larvae of certain fly species. About 70 larvae were removed manually. A biopsy of the tissue underneath demonstrated a basal cell carcinoma. The myiasis was produced by the fly Lucilia sericata, currently used for treating chronic nonhealing ulcers. Because of the stage of the carcinoma, an orbital exenteration was carried out. RESULTS: The patient died 2 days later because of cardiopulmonary f

Survival after rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis in an immunocompetent patient.

OBJECTIVE: Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis is usually associated with a poor prognosis and is almost exclusively seen in immunocompromised patients. We report the third documented case of rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis caused by Apophysomyces elegans (a new genus of the family Mucoraceae first isolated in 1979) in an immunocompetent individual. Orbital exenteration and radical debridement of involved adjacent structures combined with intravenous liposomal amphotericin resulted in patient survival. DESIGN: Interventional case report. METHOD: A 59-year-old immunocompetent white man su

Closure of sino-orbital fistula using glabellar rotation flap: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sino-orbital fistulas (SOF) are a well-reported complication of orbitalexenteration and sinonasal carcinoma resection. Despite repair, however, complete fistula closure may be difficult. CASE: A 79 -years-old man had undergone total exenteration of right orbit for spreading sqamous cell carcinoma of conjunctiva. Subsequently he developed two large sinoorbitalfistulae medially to the ethmoid sinus wall of the orbit. Post- operatively good socket hygiene was maintained but the fistulae increased in size. At 3 month follow-up, closure of the fistulae using glabellar rotation advancem

Integrated versus non-integrated orbital implants for treating anophthalmic sockets.

BACKGROUND: Anophthalmia is the absence of one or both eyes, and it can be congenital (i.e. a birth defect) or acquired later in life. There are two main types of orbital implant: integrated, whereby the implant receives a blood supply from the body that allows for the integration of the prosthesis within the tissue; and non-integrated, where the implant remains separate. Despite the remarkable progress in anophthalmic socket reconstruction and in the development of various types of implants, there are still uncertainties about the real roles of integrated (hydroxyapatite (HA), porous polyethy

Choroidal ganglioneuroma in a patient with orbitopalpebral neurofibromatosis.

Ganglioneuroma is a rare, benign tumor originating from the sympathetic ganglion cells. Choroidal ganglioneuroma in association with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) has been reported in a few cases. This study describes a 21-year-old woman with orbitopalpebral NF, who underwent evisceration for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy, intractable glaucoma, and absolute painful eyes and who was found to have choroidal ganglioneuroma and retrobulbar plexiform neurofibroma on histologic examination. This case, together with the previously described cases, suggests that eyes with choroidal ganglioneuroma

Anaplastology: changing appearances/changing lives.

This is a synopsis of the presentation delivered at the Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses' Annual Congress and Nursing Symposium, September 11, 2012 in Washington, DC. We all have imperfections in our faces and bodies that we would like to change. Consider, though, the cancer patient or the trauma victim who must deal with a facial disfigurement that completely changes their appearance, and often, their ability to function normally. Anaplastology, which combines art and science through creativity and functionality, can make monumental improvements in the quality of a person's

Retinoblastoma presenting with a cheek mass.

This is a report of a case of retinoblastoma that mimicked Burkitt's lymphoma by presenting with a left proptosis and a right cheek mass. With the aid of fine-needle aspiration cytology, the diagnosis was established as retinoblasstoma and a left modified exenteration was performed. The patient had adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy to the left orbit and the right maxilla with regression. At 12 months postoperatively, there was no evidence of recurrence, and the patient was still hale and hearty. In conclusion, this patient had left retinoblastoma with metastasis to the contralateral jaw.

Survival After Orbital Exenteration for Primary Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Locally advanced periorbital cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) may require orbital exenteration, which is highly morbid. As immunotherapy develops, orbit preservation may become widespread, and data benchmarking survival with current standard-of-care surgery and radiotherapy are essential to the integration of this emerging method into modern treatment paradigms. This study aimed to determine the survival of patients after orbital exenteration for cSCC and investigate contributing factors. It was hypothesized that postoperative radiotherapy would be associated with improved
