Modified radical mastoidectomy (MRM) provides relatively safe surgical access for the removal of chronic middle ear and mastoid disease and gives reproducible results. However, it had been suggested that hearing may not be as good as that after "intact canal wall mastoidectomy" (ICWM). This paper reviews 153 tertiary referrals suffering from extensive disease who underwent MRM and compares their hearing results with those obtained by other authors using ICWM and MRM and a variety of reconstructive techniques. In this study there were no dead ears and no significant changes in bone conduction d

Conductive, sensorineural and mixed hearing loss occur in osteogenesis imperfecta in autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. Hearing loss is generally due to the middle and inner ear pathology of osteogenesis imperfecta and only occasionally to the coincidental association of otosclerosis and osteogenesis imperfecta. Two lesions cause the conductive hearing loss of osteogenesis imperfecta: (1) functional ossicular discontinuity due either to stapes superstructure fracture or fibrous replacement, or (2) thick, crumbly, lightly fixed stapes footplate. Cochlear hair cell loss, stria vascularis at

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic effect that the titanium partial ossicular reconstruction prosthesis and autologous ossicles have on hearing loss after reconstruction of a damaged ossicular chain.
METHODS: Forty-two medical records of treatments carried out from 2013 to 2015 for ossicular chain damage with facial nerve paralysis due to temporal bone fractures were reviewed. The study assessed: causes of damage, pre-operative pure tone audiometry findings, types of intra-operative ossicular chain damage, intra-operative ossicular chain repair methods (titanium partial ossicular reconstr

OBJECTIVE: The titanium stapes footplate prosthesis (FPP) was designed to ensure a stable connection of a total ossicular replacement prosthesis (TORP) to the stapes footplate and maximize acoustic coupling by centering the footplate on the oval window. Our goal was to assess the impact of the FPP on TORP ossiculoplasty outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review.
SETTING: Tertiary care center.
SUBJECTS: Adult patients undergoing TORP ossiculoplasty with (n=53) or without (n=108) a stapes FPP.
METHODS: Rate of prosthesis displacement and audiologic outcomes were tabulated for sta

Middle ear neuroendocrine tumors (MeNETs) are an exceptionally rare occurrence. These benign tumors stem from the tympanic mucosa and can easily be misinterpreted by the clinician and the pathologist. Clinical characteristics, otoscopic findings and medical imaging in these cases are non-specific. We present a case of a 60-year-old male patient with bilateral hearing loss following recent coronavirus disease 2019 disease. Diagnostic work-up revealed a soft tissue neoplasm of the left middle ear. Surgical resection of the tumor mass with implantation of a partial ossicular replacement prosthesi

We report the case of a 9-years-old girl showing at examination facial asymmetry, right ear with II degree dysplasy and degree III in the left ear (according Marx classification), cleft palate, renal agenesy, scoliosis and hypoplasy of the left thumb. Otoscopically both external ear canals looked very narrow and very upright positioned. The drumhead image recalling that of chronic mucoid effusion. The measurement of hearing through pure-tone audiometry, PEATC, and tympanometry resulted in a pattern of bilateral transmissive pantonal hearing impairment accounting for 50-60 dB. Scoliosis was due

We evaluated 66 patients (72 ears) with auditory ossicle malformations, but with normal findings in the tympanic membrane, who underwent ossicular reconstruction and stapes surgery at our department between 1984 and 1997. There were 27 men (30 ears) and 39 women (42 ears). Classification of pathologic condition based on surgical findings showed separation of the incus-stapes joint in 43%, fixation of the malleus or incus in 16%, fixation of the stapes footplate in 26%, in incidence of fixation of the auditory oosicles that is higher than that previously reported. In 33% of the patients, conduc

OBJECTIVE: Otitis media is one of the most common illnesses which may cause ossicles destruction and conductive hearing loss. However, nowadays the damaged middle ear bones may be replaced by a partial or total ossicular replacement prosthesis. The main aim of this article was to confirm the proper functioning of the new middle ear prosthesis.
METHODS: This work describes first clinical trials conducted on a group of three patients with the case of interrupted ossicles continuity and chronic otitis media. The clinical trials were performed according to permission No. 157/KBL/OIL2016. The pati

BACKGROUND: Coupling of the prosthesis to the long process of the incus is a critical step in stapes surgery. We report first experiences with the NiTiFLEX® stapes prosthesis, a further development of the Soft CliP® stapes prosthesis (Kurz, Dusslingen, Germany). Instead of pure titanium, the CliP® now consists of nitinol, a superelastic nickel-titanium alloy. This further reduces the pressure exerted on the long process of the incus, aiming to improve coupling and minimize the risk of incus luxation.
METHODS: In a monocentric, retrospective cohort study, we evaluated air-bone gap reduction (4

INTRODUCTION: A partially or fully absent or largely perforated footplate is a challenging condition that may be encountered during middle ear surgery, especially in patients with a history of chronic ear problems or with previous tympanoplasties.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study on a limited number of cases undergoing revision tympanoplasty in which a new footplate was created from the cartilage, and the ossicular chain was reconstructed with a titanium prosthesis in 1 stage. Minimum follow-up was 24 months. Outcome measurements included the preoperative and postoperative bone cond

Despite the fact that cartilage, cortical bone and corneal homograft tissue is still widely used in South Africa and that there has never been a reported case of human immunodeficiency virus or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease infection transmission via this route, otolaryngologists are still reluctant to use homograft ossicles. In third world countries, such as South Africa, where ossicular prostheses are not always readily available due to financial constraints, the question arises as to whether we should be reconsidering the use of homograft ossicles. This review examines the risk of developing Cr

We report a unique case of an ossicular chain injury in a young man. Despite the fact that the patient's incus was dislocated into the external auditory canal while remaining attached to the stapes, his hearing was not affected and remained nearly normal. We discuss the patient's presenting features and our diagnostic and management strategy in this case.

The management of a unilateral congenital atresia of the external auditory canal is nonuniform and debated. Various surgical approaches, timing, coordination with microtia repair, and variable hearing improvements all contribute to the debate regarding management of this entity. This paper outlines our craniofacial team approach to the congenital unilateral atresia and microtia in children. Selection criteria, timing of repair, coordination with microtia repair, surgical results, and pitfalls will be discussed. The results of surgery in 16 patients with unilateral congenital atresia of the ext

In the present work, novel organic-inorganic hybrid materials containing boron, zirconium, and phosphorus were synthesized at different molar ratios, using the sol-gel method, starting from zirconyl chloride hexa-hydrate, triethyl borate, and phenyl phosphonic acid as the precursors. The sol-gel process is used for the first time in the present work in order to obtain organic-inorganic hybrids (or the so-called inorganic polymers) containing together boron, zirconium, and phosphorus. The sol-gel syntheses were performed at room temperature in ethanol. Zirconium containing compounds are already
