Zygomatic Arch Parosteal Osteosarcoma in Dogs and a Cat.

Parosteal osteosarcoma is a rare, slow-growing tumor most commonly arising from the surface of long bones. Tissue or histological sections from 5 dogs and 1 cat with zygomatic arch masses were examined. Clinical presentations varied from chronic sneezing to facial swelling. Imaging consistently demonstrated osseous proliferation in the area of the zygomatic arch. Histologically, the masses were characterized by well-differentiated fibro-osseous and chondroid components that radiated outward from the periosteum of the zygomatic bone. Cellular atypia and mitotic figures were uncommon. Parosteal

ERCC polymorphisms and risk of osteosarcoma: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The association between excision repair cross-complementation (ERCC) gene family (ERCC1 and ERCC2) and osteosarcoma risk was controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between ERCC1 or ERCC2 and osteosarcoma risk by systematic meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relative studies were retrieved from electronic databases without language restriction. The last search was updated on March 2017. Quality assessment was analyzed by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) score, which was recommended by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Meta-analys

Subcutaneous extraskeletal osteosarcoma in a metatarsal footpad in a cat.

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal osteosarcomas (ESOSAs) are rare neoplasms in humans and animals. In cats, ESOSA has been reported to arise from orbital, ocular, intestinal, mammary and subcutaneous locations. Subcutaneous ESOSA occurs most commonly at sites used for vaccination including interscapular, dorsal lumbar or thigh areas. Previous reports of feline cases have not documented the use of advanced diagnostic imaging to exclude a primary bone tumour. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinicopathological and advanced imaging findings of a subcutaneous ESOSA occurring in a metatarsal footpad of a cat a

Rapamycin inhibits tumor growth of human osteosarcomas.

PURPOSE: Treatment options for osteosarcoma are limited due to its resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Signaling through the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway contributes to cell proliferation and chemoresistance of many cancers. Rapamycin, as an inhibitor of mTOR, has been developed as potentially valuable therapeutic agent. In this report, we evaluated the effects of rapamycin on human osteosarcoma cells' growth in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: Proliferation of osteosarcoma cells treated with rapamycin at different time periods was detected and changes in the cell cycle we

Primary osteosarcoma of the clavicle and the perils of bone biopsy.

We present a rare case of delayed diagnosis of osteosarcoma of the medial clavicle in a young man. He presented following a pathological fracture with a falsely reassuring core and fine-needle aspiration biopsy. The initial biopsy was suggestive of an aneurysmal bone cyst and was therefore treated conservatively without further follow-up. The rapid increase in size over the next 8 months triggered a repeat presentation and subsequent repeat biopsy. The open biopsy confirmed high-grade osteosarcoma and the patient underwent claviculectomy with neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Biological reconstruction for children with osteosarcoma around the knee.

INTRODUCTION: Limb salvage in children with primary malignant bone tumours around the knee is challenging, with considerations such as shortening, bone and joint remodeling and high functional demands of active children. The ultimate aim for reconstruction is restoring a stable, painless and mobile joint. With improved survival rates from chemotherapy, reconstructive techniques should ideally last the child's lifespan. We adopted a biological approach by preserving the patients' native joint, with bony defects bridged by fibula grafts supplemented by autoclaved bone grafts infused with bone ma

Pathological fracture in osteosarcoma: is it always an indication for amputation?

BACKGROUND: The presence of a pathological fracture due to osteosarcoma (OS) has been considered a high risk factor for dissemination and an indication for immediate amputation. With current neoadjuvant chemotherapy regimens there is a trend towards limb salvage procedures in selected cases. The aim of this study is to assess the outcome of patients treated with amputation versus patients treated with limb salvage surgery focusing on local recurrence, mortality rates and metastatic dissemination. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of patients with OS treated at our institution was pe

Clinicopathologic features and prognosis of osteosarcoma in Turkish adults.

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcomas are the most common solid malignancies of bone. In the last two decades there have been no concrete developments in their systemic treatment. In this trial we aimed to present our osteosarcoma patient clinical and demographic outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients treated and followed up for osteosarcoma in Ankara Numune Education and Research Hospital from 2002 to 2012 were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: A total of 21 patients (15 male, 6 female) were diagnosed with osteosarcoma. The disease was located at extremities in 76% and in 14% was metastatic at the

Primary Osteosarcoma of the Skull Base in a Pregnant Patient.

An 18-year-old female who was 14 weeks pregnant first noted vision loss in her left eye six days prior to admission. Ophthalmologic examination revealed 20/20 vision in the right eye and count fingers vision in the left eye. A marked relative afferent pupillary defect was present in the left eye. Ophthalmoscopic examination revealed a trace optic nerve pallor temporally in the left eye without associated disc oedema or haemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain demonstrated a heterogeneous mass of the left sphenoid sinus extending superiorly causing compression of the intracranial po

Pure primary osteosarcoma of the breast: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Mammary sarcomas are relatively uncommon and they represent less than one percent of all primary breast malignancies. Osteosarcoma of the breast, unassociated with other tumors, is distinctly rare, with published references generally limited to case reports and occasional cases in several series encompassing a heterogeneous group of mammary sarcomas and extraosseous osteosarcomas at various sites. The authors present a patient with pure osteosarcoma of the breast, osteoblastic type, with biologically aggressive pattern. CASE REPORT: A 79-year-old lady became aware of a rapidly e

Extra osseous osteosarcoma of the retroperitoneum: an unusual entity.

Extra-osseous osteosarcomas constitute about 1-1.2% of all osteosarcomas. The most common sites are the extremities, thorax, and the abdomen. Retroperitoneal osteosarcomas are rare and very few cases have been reported. They are similar in their biology to high grade soft tissue sarcomas. R0 resection appears to be the best possible treatment for these tumors. All three variants of conventional osteosarcoma--osteoblastic, chondroblastic, and fibroblastic have been described in these tumors. Chemotherapy has been attempted with adriamycin-based regimens with poor results. Unlike extremity osteo

A Rare Case of Primary osteosarcoma of urinary bladder.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal soft tissue tumor without attachment to the bone, and is able to produce osteoid or cartilaginous matrix. This entity accounts for 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Thus far, less than 35 cases of bladder osteosarcomas have been reported in the literature. These tumors are associated with very poor prognosis. We report a case of primary osteosarcoma of the urinary bladder presenting with intermittent hematuria, dysuria, and right flank pain. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan of the abdomen, pelvis, and chest revealed a bladder mass a

Pathological fracture as the presenting feature in pediatric osteosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Pathological fracture is an uncommon presentation in patients with long bone osteosarcoma. PROCEDURES: We retrospectively reviewed the database of all patients with histologically proven osteosarcoma under the age of 18 years from 1991 to 2011 in a tertiary pediatric oncology referral center. Five patients with pathological fractures as the first presentation of osteosarcoma were identified. The treatment strategies and complications were evaluated. Ten sex-, age-, and site- matched osteosarcoma patients without pathological fracture were selected as controls. The incidence of dis

Osteosarcoma with atypical location in an elderly female patient.

Osteosarcoma most frequently affects long bones, particularly around the knee, and is therefore rare in the forearm. We report the case of a 67-year-old woman presenting with progressive lesion of the distal radius. A pathological diagnosis of osteoblastic osteosarcoma was suspected and was confirmed by needle biopsy. There had been two other cases of osteosarcoma in the same family. The patient was treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by amputation of the arm below the elbow.

Osteosarcoma of maxilla with unusual image findings in child.

Osteosarcoma of the head and neck is relatively rare and accounts for less than 10 percent of all osteosarcomas in general. We report a case of osteosarcoma in which imaging and histopathology of the hard palate of an 11-year-old boy yielded atypical findings. An approximately 8×15mm lesion found in the center of the palate was hard and healthy in color. Subsequent biopsy resulted in a diagnosis of nonepithelial malignant tumor. No abnormalities were observed in the maxillary bone or tooth on panoramic or occlusal radiographs. Computed tomography images revealed a mass lesion approximately 7×9

[An autopsy case of extraskeletal osteosarcoma arising in the mediastinum].

A 90-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with dyspnea and palpitation. A chest X-ray film showed an enlarged cardiac outline. An enhanced chest CT scan showed a 35-mm tumor in the superior portion of the mediastinum, a large amount of pericardial effusion, and bilateral lung nodules. She showed progressive deterioration and died 2 weeks after admission. At autopsy, there was a solid tumor measuring 35 mm in the anterior mediastinum between the aortic arch and trachea. The tumor invaded the left subclavian artery. The pathological autopsy finding was extraskeletal osteosarcoma arising f

Moyamoya in a child treated with interferon for recurrent osteosarcoma.

Moyamoya is a cerebral vasculopathy of unknown etiology rarely described as a late effect after the treatment of childhood cancer. We describe a 12-year-old female who developed moyamoya after the completion of systemic chemotherapy, surgery, and adjuvant interferon alpha for osteosarcoma with pulmonary metastases. Given the importance of characterizing late effects after the treatment of childhood cancer, the potential role of interferon alpha in the development of moyamoya is discussed.

The spectrum of gnathic osteosarcoma: caveats for the clinician and the pathologist.

Seven expansile jaw lesions in patients ranging from 7 to 63 years are presented to illustrate diagnostic and management issues pertaining to cases ultimately proven to be gnathic osteosarcoma (GO). Six of the cases in our series were low-grade osteoblastic and one high-grade chondroblastic. None of our cases exhibited the characteristic "sunburst" radiopaque appearance described for GO. All of our cases displayed cortical expansion and one showed development of diastema. Two occurred in the maxilla and five in the mandible. Two of the patients with mandibular lesions presented initially with

Osteosarcoma of the jaw. A brief review and a case report.

Osteosarcoma of the jaws accounts for 6-13% of all osteosarcomata. If not diagnosed early, it spreads extensively through the jaw and contiguous soft tissues into the nasal cavity, the maxillary sinus, the orbit and the infratemporal fossa, and may invade the oral soft tissues. A clinical finding of tooth displacement and tooth mobility associated with radiolucency/radiopacity should alert the practitioner to the possibility of osteosarcoma or some other malignancy.

A case of primary vertebral osteosarcoma metastasizing to pancreas.

CONTEXT: Osteosarcoma is the most common malignant bone tumor in children and adolescents and possesses a high potential for metastasis. The most common sites of osteosarcomatous metastases are the lungs, pleurae, and bone; the pancreas being extremely rare. CASE REPORT: We report the computed tomography findings of a rare case of pancreatic metastasis in a 14-year-old boy with primary vertebral osteosarcoma being followed-up for 6 years. On abdominal CT, a huge mass containing necrotic and calcified areas and causing bone destruction was seen between thoracic vertebra 7 and sacral vertebra 1
