Masked auditory thresholds in sciaenid fishes: a comparative study.

Western Atlantic sciaenids comprise a taxonomically diverse teleost family with significant variations in the relationship between the swim bladder and the otic capsule. In this study, the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was used to test the hypothesis that fishes with different peripheral auditory structures (black drum, Pogonias chromis and Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus) show differences in frequency selectivity. In a black drum the swim bladder is relatively distant from the otic capsule while the swim bladder in Atlantic croaker possesses anteriorly-directed diverticulas that

Torsional vestibulo-ocular reflex during whole-body oscillation in the upright and the supine position: II. Responses in patients after vestibular neuritis.

In a recent study we demonstrated that otolith input modifies the torsional angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (torVOR) of healthy human subjects: Compared to turntable oscillations in supine position, oscillations in upright position increased the gain of torVOR by 0.1 and cancelled the phase lead originating from low-frequency semicircular canal signals. We asked whether these otolith-related changes of torVOR are still present in patients after vestibular neuritis (VN). Eight patients were sinusoidally oscillated about their naso-occipital axis in supine (canal-only stimulation) and upright (c

Space motion sickness preflight adaptation training: preliminary studies with prototype trainers.

Preflight training frequently has been proposed as a potential solution to the problem of space motion sickness. The paper considers successively the otolith reinterpretation, the concept for a preflight adaptation trainer and the research with the Miami University Seesaw, the Wright Patterson Air-Force Base Dynamic Environment Simulator and the Visually Coupled Airborne Systems Simulator prototype adaptation trainers.

Otolith tilt-translation reinterpretation following prolonged weightlessness: implications for preflight training.

Observations with three astronauts yielded two major findings. First, perceived self-motion during sinusoidal roll differed immediately postflight from preflight. Between 70 and 150 min after landing, roll was perceived primarily as linear translation. Secondly, more horizontal eye movement was elicited by roll stimulation immediately postflight relative to both preflight and later postflight observations. These results support an "otolith tilt-translation reinterpretation" hypothesis, which has clear implications for understanding astronaut reports of space motion sickness during the early pe

The transmastoid partial labyrinthectomy approach to medial skull base lesions.

INTRODUCTION: It has long been thought that surgical disruption of the membranous labyrinth invariably results in sensorineural hearing loss and balance dysfunction. Recent evidence suggests that the inner ear can withstand such manipulation without loss of function. The technique of transmastoid partial labyrinthectomy has recently been described as a means of providing access to lesions of the medial skull base by removing part of the labyrinth and at the same time attempting to preserve hearing and vestibular function of the lateral semicircular canal (LSCC) and otolithic organs. PROCEDURE

An hypoxia-tolerant flatfish: consequences of sustained stress on the slender sole Lyopsetta exilis (Pleuronectidae) in the context of a changing ocean.

Slender sole Lyopsetta exilis is an abundant groundfish on the continental shelf and inner waters of British Columbia, Canada, where it reaches a maximum standard length of 44 cm. Benthic image surveys coupled with oxygen measurements in Saanich Inlet document a dense population in bottom conditions near anoxia (0.03 ml l-1 oxygen) where diel migrating zooplankton intersect the bottom; we confirm this species is a planktivore, which limits its depth range to the base of the migration layer. In a comparison with slender sole from a nearby well-oxygenated habitat, several probable effects of liv

Veterans have greater variability in their perception of binocular alignment.

INTRODUCTION: A significant population of our wounded veterans suffer long-term functional consequences of visual deficit, disorientation, dizziness, and an impaired ability to read. These symptoms may be related to damage within the otolith pathways that contribute to ocular alignment. The purpose of this study was to compare perception of vertical and torsional ocular alignment between veterans and healthy controls in an upright and supine test position. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Veterans (n = 26) with reports of dizziness were recruited from the East Orange Veterans Administration Hospital. H

Normal pressure hydrocephalus: Increase of utricular input in responders to spinal tap test.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether there is a change in ocular (oVEMP) and cervical (cVEMP) vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) before and after spinal tap test (STT). METHODS: In 25 patients (6 females, age 62-83years) c/oVEMP were measured before and after STT. Patients with an increase of >20% of walking velocity were classified as responders (n=10). VEMP were also measured in a control group of 13 non-NPH patients. RESULTS: All patients had reproducible oVEMP; 68% had cVEMP. There was a significant increase of the peak-to-peak (pp) oV

The first attack of Ménière's disease: a study through SVV perception, clinical and pathogenetic implications.

This is a study of Subjective Visual Vertical (SVV) perception during acute attacks of Ménière's disease (MD) with comparative evaluation of concurrent nystagmus. We studied 21 patients with unilateral MD during the acute phase and 7 days later. Of the nine patients with an initial attack of MD, seven had an alteration of SVV perception and of these, three indicated a match with canal functional signs, while four patients showed an opposite trend of SVV perception relative to the spontaneous nystagmus. Nine of the 12 patients with definite MD had a pathological SVV perception always in corresp

Detection of human utricular otoconia degeneration in vital specimen and implications for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Otoconia are assumed to be involved in inner ear disorders such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Up to now, the distinct structure and morphology of intact and degenerate human utricular otoconia has been only poorly investigated on vital specimen. In this study, human otoconia were obtained from the utricle in five patients undergoing translabyrinthine vestibular schwannoma surgery. Specimens were examined by environmental scanning electron microscopy. Intact and degenerate otoconia as well as fracture particles of otoconia and bone were analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray micr

Patients with migraine correctly estimate the visual verticality.

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to study otolith function by measuring the static subjective visual vertical (SVV) in migraine patients and in controls with and without kinetosis (motion sickness). METHODS AND MATERIAL: Forty-seven patients with moderately severe migraine and 96 healthy controls were enrolled. Using a questionnaire, persons with kinetosis were identified. The SVV test was performed in a totally dark room. Subjects wore a stiffneck to stabilize the head in an erect position. They were required to adjust an infrared line to the gravitational vertical with a hand-held infrared remote contr

The cerebellar nodulus/uvula integrates otolith signals for the translational vestibulo-ocular reflex.

BACKGROUND: The otolith-driven translational vestibulo-ocular reflex (tVOR) generates compensatory eye movements to linear head accelerations. Studies in humans indicate that the cerebellum plays a critical role in the neural control of the tVOR, but little is known about mechanisms of this control or the functions of specific cerebellar structures. Here, we chose to investigate the contribution of the nodulus and uvula, which have been shown by prior studies to be involved in the processing of otolith signals in other contexts. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We recorded eye movements in two

Vestibular control of skeletal geometry in the guinea pig: a problem of good trim?

Motor control of different segments of the body with multiple degrees of freedom appears to be coordinated by utilizing preferred axes of motor activity. This hypothesis may also be applied to vestibular control of posture. To explore this question we studied the anatomical relationship between the head and the cervical vertebral column by taking radiographs of the head-neck region in unrestrained alert guinea pigs. We determined that biomechanical constraints contribute to the stereotypical skeletal geometry observed in the resting animal and to a functional segmentation of the head-neck move

Clinical verification of a unilateral otolith test.

In a previous study we reported promising results for a new test to differentiate in vivo unilateral otolith functions. That study pointed to a need for further validation on known pathological cases. In this presentation we will detail the results gathered on a group of clinically verified vestibular defectives (verum) and a normal (control) group. The subjects in the verum group were former patients of the ENT clinic of the university hospital. These subjects had usually suffered from neurinoma of the VIIth cranial nerve or inner ear infections. All had reguired surgical intervention includi

Integrating multiple bioassays to detect and assess impacts of sublethal exposure to metal mixtures in an estuarine fish.

Estuaries are natural sinks for a wide range of urban, industrial and agricultural contaminants that accumulate at potentially toxic but non-lethal concentrations, yet we know relatively little about the long-term impacts of toxicants at these levels on aquatic organisms. In this study, we present an integrated, multi-pronged approach to detect and assess the impacts to estuarine fish of exposure to sublethal concentrations of metal mixtures. Our aims were to (1) examine the effects of sublethal metal exposure on the embryonic development of Galaxias maculatus, an estuarine spawning fish nativ

Assessment of the otolith-ocular reflex using ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in patients with episodic lateral tilt sensation.

The otolith-ocular reflex in patients with episodic lateral tilt sensation without any other vestibular symptoms was assessed using ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP). Ten patients (6 men and 4 women, mean age=53.5) were enrolled. All patients had episodic lateral tilt sensation. Patients with a medical history of rotatory vertigo, loss of consciousness, head trauma, or symptoms or signs of central nervous dysfunction or proprioceptive dysfunction and those who had been definitely diagnosed with a disease that causes disequilibrium were excluded. All of the 10 patients had oV
