IMPORTANCE: Research studies often group Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander individuals together with Asian individuals despite being consistently identified as having worse health outcomes and higher rates of comorbidities and mortality. Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander individuals also have high incidence rates of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer compared with the general population; however, disparities in clinical presentation and survival outcomes of head and neck cancer squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) among this population have not been investigated nor compared with t

BACKGROUND: Lack of guidelines on control of pediculosis in the Solomon Islands led to a search for relevant evidence on head lice in the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs). The aim of this search was to systematically evaluate evidence in the peer reviewed literature on pediculosis due to head lice (Pediculus humanus var capitis) in the 22 PICTs from the perspective of its value in informing national guidelines and control strategies.
METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL and Scopus were searched using the terms (pediculosis OR head lice) AND each of the 22 PICTs individually

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies suggest that exposure to racist online interactions and content may be associated with depressive symptoms and suicide risk among racially minoritized individuals. Despite the hate and violence easily encountered online, individuals use social media platforms to engage with their mental health concerns and seek support. Hence, the current study aimed to explore whether online mental health engagement would buffer the depressive symptoms and suicide risk associated with online racism among Black and Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) emerging adults (18-29) who

BACKGROUND: Asian Pacific Islanders (APIs) represent one of the fastest-growing racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Yet, national data on temporal trends and in-hospital outcomes of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in this population remain limited.
METHODS: Using the National Inpatient Sample, we conducted a retrospective analysis of AMI hospitalizations from 2003 to 2022. Hospitalizations were stratified into two groups based on race/ethnicity: APIs and non-APIs. Propensity score matching was used to match both study groups, and in-hospital outcomes were then analyzed.
RESULTS:

Purpose: This study examined differences in self-reported physical violence and psychological distress among Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) sexual minority men (SMM) before and during the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic (2019 vs. 2020). Methods: We used data from 1127 AAPI SMM who completed the 2019 (August 2019-December 2019) and 2020 (August 2020-January 2021) cycles of the American Men's Internet Survey (AMIS). We assessed differences in experiencing physical violence and serious psychological distress by year of survey completion. We used Poisson regression with robu

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is one of the leading cancer sites diagnosed among Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians (AANHPI). To better understand the patterns of lung cancer incidence among AANHPIs, we examined the incidence trends of five histologic cell types of lung cancer across ten AANHPI populations in comparison with non-Hispanic Whites.
METHODS: Lung cancer incidence data from 1990 through 2010 were obtained from 13 U.S. population-based cancer registries. Age-adjusted histologic cell-type-specific incidence rates and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Joinpoin

OBJECTIVES: Prenatal health care (PNC) is associated with positive maternal and infant health outcomes. There is limited knowledge regarding Native Hawaiians/Other Pacific Islanders (NHOPI) and Asian women's access to PNC especially among those with partner abuse (PA) experience. The objectives of this paper were to (1) describe and examine factors associated with PNC access barriers among mothers, by race; and, (2) determine the association between PA and PNC access, by race.
METHODS: We analyzed 2004-2007 data from Hawai'i's Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (n = 7,158). The outco

Successful communicable disease surveillance depends on effective bidirectional information flow between clinicians at the periphery and communicable disease control units at regional, national and global levels. Resource-poor countries often struggle to establish and maintain the crucial link with the periphery. A simple syndrome-based outbreak surveillance system initially developed and evaluated in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa was adapted for the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu. Eight syndromes were identified for surveillance: acute flaccid paralysis (poliomyelitis), profuse watery di

BACKGROUND: Among Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders (ANHPI) in the United States, cancer and cardiovascular disease are the leading causes of death. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer among ANHPIs, with improving survival rates. However, the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events among ANHPI CRC survivors is unknown, especially within disaggregated ANHPI race and ethnicity groups.
METHODS: We estimated the risk of CVD events among ANHPI CRC survivors within the SEER-Medicare database. Composite CVD, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, and stroke/transi

Stigmatization, hostility, and violence towards the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community have increased sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to conduct research to promote understanding of the effects of such stigmatization on the AAPI community. Accordingly, the present study used a combined minority stress and integrated threat framework to examine whether factors related to AAPI identity would moderate the relationship between stigmatization/threat associated with AAPI identity and increased psychological distress and behavioral vigilance. AAPI individuals w

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection worldwide with some of the highest prevalence rates among Pacific Island Countries where syndromic management is practiced. However, little is known about the true prevalence and risk indicators for infection among neglected populations in these countries that suffer from health disparities.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Consecutive sampling was used to enroll sexually active females, aged 18-40 years, attending 12 Fijian Ministry of Health and Medical Services Health Centers and outreach locations

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is a foodborne disease caused by the consumption of seafood (fish and marine invertebrates) contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs) produced by dinoflagellates in the genus Gambierdiscus. The report of a CFP-like mass-poisoning outbreak following the consumption of Tectus niloticus (Tegulidae, Gastropod) from Anaho Bay on Nuku Hiva Island (Marquesas archipelago, French Polynesia) prompted field investigations to assess the presence of CTXs in T. niloticus. Samples were collected from Anaho Bay, 1, 6 and 28 months after this poisoning outbreak, as well as in Taiohae

BACKGROUND: A 32-base pair (bp) deletion mutation in the beta-chemokine receptor CCR5 gene has been associated with resistance against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection and disease. Large-scale studies conducted among Caucasians indicate that individuals who are homozygous for this deletion mutation (D32/D32) are protected against HIV-1 infection despite multiple high-risk exposures, whereas CCR5/ D32 heterozygotes have a slower progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
OBJECTIVE: To determine the genotype and allele frequencies of the CCR5 gene 32-bp delet

The small Pacific island nation of Niue was validated by the WHO in 2016 as having eliminated lymphatic filariasis (LF) as a public health problem; however, no post-validation surveillance (PVS) has been conducted since. In 2025, LF-PVS was integrated into a near-census national WHO STEPwise non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factor survey, a cost-effective approach for estimating LF prevalence and assessing whether elimination had been sustained. Finger-prick blood samples were tested for LF antigen and antibodies; antigen-positive samples were screened for microfilariae. One participant was

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) disparities exist in the rapidly growing and extremely heterogeneous Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NH/PI) ageing populations in the United States. Limited community-clinical resources supporting culturally competent and timely diagnosis exacerbate barriers to existing care services in these populations. Community-based participatory research or community-engaged research are proven community-academic research approaches that can support the development and implementation of community-focused programmes to maximise c

The research aim was to investigate associations between objectively-assessed built environment attributes and metabolic risk in adolescents of Pacific Islands ethnicity, and to consider the possible mediating effect of physical activity and sedentary time. Youth (n = 204) undertook a suite of physical assessments including body composition, blood sampling, and blood pressure measurements, and seven day accelerometry. Objective measures of the neighbourhood built environment were generated around individual addresses. Logistic regression and linear modelling were used to assess associations be

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2024eng
UNLABELLED: We studied factors affecting osteoporotic hip fracture mortality in Hawai'i, a region with unique geography and racial composition. Men, older adults, higher ASA score, lower BMI, and NHPI race were associated with higher mortality. This is the first study demonstrating increased mortality risk after hip fracture in NHPI patients.
PURPOSE: To estimate mortality rates and identify specific risk factors associated with 1-year mortality after osteoporotic hip fracture in Hawai'i.
METHODS: A retrospective review of adults (≥ 50 years) hospitalized with an osteoporotic hip fracture at
