Comparison of the Effects of Postoperative Arm Restraints and Mittens on Cleft Lip Scar Quality after Primary Repair.

Introduction: Postoperative management following primary cleft lip repair varies across institutions, cleft care teams, and individual surgeons. Postoperative precautions employed after cleft lip repair include dietary restrictions, pacifier limitations, and immobilization, with arm restraints long being used. Yet, restraint distress has led to the exploration of other forms of immobilization. Thus, this study aims to assess cleft lip scar quality and complication rates after postoperative immobilization with arm restraints versus hand mittens. Methods: A retrospective review of patients with

Engineered IL13 variants direct specificity of IL13Rα2-targeted CAR T cell therapy.

IL13Rα2 is an attractive target due to its overexpression in a variety of cancers and rare expression in healthy tissue, motivating expansion of interleukin 13 (IL13)-based chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy from glioblastoma into systemic malignancies. IL13Rα1, the other binding partner of IL13, is ubiquitously expressed in healthy tissue, raising concerns about the therapeutic window of systemic administration. IL13 mutants with diminished binding affinity to IL13Rα1 were previously generated by structure-guided protein engineering. In this study, two such variants, termed C4 and

Aerosolized Calfactant for Newborns With Respiratory Distress: A Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Exogenous surfactants to treat respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) are approved for tracheal instillation only; this requires intubation, often followed by positive pressure ventilation to promote distribution. Aerosol delivery offers a safer alternative, but clinical studies have had mixed results. We hypothesized that efficient aerosolization of a surfactant with low viscosity, early in the course of RDS, could reduce the need for intubation and instillation of liquid surfactant. METHODS: A prospective, multicenter, randomized, unblinded comparison trial of aerosolized calfactan

Clinical efficacy of Amalaki Rasayana in the management of Pandu (Iron deficiency anemia).

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide, which can be correlated to Pandu described in ayurvedic classics. Poor absorption of iron is one of the main reasons of IDA. Amalaki (Phyllanthus emblica L.) has Tridoshahara, especially Pittashamaka (pacifying Pitta) and Rasayana (rejuvenative) properties, thus nourishes the Dhatus and is also known to enhance the absorption of iron. AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of Amalaki Rasayana in the management of Pandu w.s.r. IDA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized controlled open clinical trial

Comparison of tongue muscle characteristics of preterm and full term infants during nutritive and nonnutritive sucking.

BACKGROUND: Independent oral feeding requires coordination of suck, swallow and breathe and the lingual musculature plays a significant role in this coordinative action. However, clinical benchmarks of lingual function fundamental to successful feeding have not been explored. AIMS: The present study tests our model for quantifying infant lingual force and size and compares the muscle measures of interest in two cohorts: healthy full-term infants (FT) (N=5) and healthy preterm infants (PT) (N=6). METHOD: Using an instrumented pacifier and bottle nipple, we determined the resultant compressive

A longitudinal study comparing mutans streptococci and lactobacilli colonisation in dentate children aged 6 to 24 months.

This longitudinal study aimed to investigate variables associated with colonisation of mutans streptococci (MS) compared with lactobacilli (LB) colonisation in a cohort of children (n = 214) from the time of first tooth eruption at approximately 6 months until 24 months of age. Repeated plaque and salivary samples were collected from the same infants at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months and assayed for MS and LB using a microbiological culture kit. Children having both MS and LB increased from 4% at 6 months to 13% at 12 and 18 months to 20% at 24 months (p = 0.004). LB presence at 6 months was correlat

[Failure of sublingual immunotherapy to treat latex allergy. A report of a case].

Natural rubber latex has been in widespread use for over a century. Reports of immediate hypersensitivity to latex have increased dramatically since the first case was reported in 1979, specially in persons with cumulative latex exposure. A 13 year old male was referred to our office. He had been wearing orthodontic rubber bands for two years. The previous year he started having itchy, red and watery eyes, with sneezing and runny nose when he was exposed to rubber products. Then he developed oral edema and lip ulcers. Finally, he experienced cough, wheezing, chest tightness and dyspnea. The pa

The effect of high-pass filtering on TEOAE in 2-month-old infants.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of high-pass filtering on TEOAE obtained from 2-month-old infants as a function of filter cut-off frequency, activity states and pass/fail status of infants. Two experiments were performed. In Experiment 1, 100 2-month-old infants (200 ears) in five activity states (asleep, awake but peaceful, sucking a pacifier, feeding, restless) were tested by use of TEOAE technology. Five different filter conditions were applied to the TEOAE responses post hoc. The filter conditions were set at 781 Hz (default setting), 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 kHz. R

Blocking of the hepatic vein outflow by neointima covering a wallstent across a membranous stenosis of the inferior vena cava.

INTRODUCTION: By definition, the cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is not known. Observational studies have found an association between SIDS and several risk factors, including prone sleeping position, prenatal or postnatal exposure to tobacco smoke, soft sleeping surfaces, hyperthermia/overwrapping, bed sharing (particularly with mothers who smoke), lack of breastfeeding, and lack of soother use. The risk of SIDS is increased in families in which there has been a prior sudden infant death. METHODS AND OUTCOMES: We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following cl

Comparative Efficacy of Fixed Versus Removable Habit-Breaking Appliances for the Management of Non-nutritive Sucking Habits: A Systematic Review.

Non-nutritive sucking habits, including thumb, finger, and pacifier sucking, are common self-soothing behaviors in early childhood, and persistence beyond the preschool years is associated with anterior open bite, increased overjet, and altered orofacial function. Interceptive management often involves habit-breaking appliances that may be fixed or removable, yet their relative effectiveness remains debated. This systematic review compared the clinical efficacy of fixed versus removable habit-breaking appliances in achieving habit cessation and correcting associated dentoalveolar discrepancies

Morphogenetic Expression of Genes in Class II Division 2 Malocclusion: A Pedigree Study.

Introduction The etiology of malocclusion is multifactorial, involving both genetic and environmental influences. The literature has shown that neither a single entity, hereditary or genetic factors, nor ecological factors alone are responsible for causing malocclusion; furthermore, constant thumb-sucking and pacifier use, bony anomalies, congenitally missing teeth, oral injury, mouth breathing, etc., often cause malocclusion. Participants were selected from those who reported to the outpatient department of the Karnavati School of Dentistry in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, indicating a clinic-

Misconceptions and traditional practices towards infant teething symptoms among mothers in Southwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The assumption of a link between common symptoms such as febrile illness, diarrhea and the eruption of primary teeth has been established over many centuries. According to traditional beliefs in Ethiopia, diarrhea and fever at the time of milk teeth eruption may be due to a worm in the child's gums. Current medical observations show little more than restlessness, drooling, and finger sucking resulting from teething. The purpose of this research was to assess mothers' traditional beliefs and practices towards teething symptoms. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study design wa
