OBJECTIVE: The influence of physical and psychosocial variables on self-rated disability in patients with chronic mechanical neck pain has not been fully determined. This study examined the relationship of pain, physical impairment, and pain-related fear to disability in individuals with chronic mechanical neck pain.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Ninety-seven (n = 97) subjects (28 men, 69 women; mean age, 39.3 yrs) with chronic mechanical neck pain were prospectively recruited. Demographic information, duration of pain symptoms, pain intensity, pain-related fear, and cervical

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Differences exist between sexes in pain and pain-related outcomes, such as development of chronic pain. Previous studies suggested a higher risk for pain chronification in female patients. Furthermore, pain catastrophizing is an important risk factor for chronification of pain. However, it is unclear whether sex differences in catastrophic thinking could explain the sex differences in pain chronification.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine sex differences in pain catastrophizing. Additionally, we investigated pain catastrophizing as a potential mediato

Background and aims Psychological traits such as pain catastrophizing may play a role in the development of chronic pelvic pain (CPP). Pain catastrophizing is the tendency to amplify negative cognitive and emotional pain processes. The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) assesses elements of pain catastrophizing divided into three subgroups of factors (rumination, helplessness and magnification). Previous studies have shown associations between CPP and increased pain sensitivity, widespread generalized hyperalgesia, and decreased pain thresholds, but the relation between pain catastrophizing and

Chronic widespread pain (CWP) is common and associated with loss of functioning and health. Subjects with chronic nonwidespread pain (CnWP) are at increased risk of developing CWP, but few studies have described the nature of the development over time. We followed a random sample of 3105 participants from the population-based HUNT 3 study with 5 annual measurements of pain over 4 years. Although 29% reported CWP on at least 1 occasion, only 7% reported it consistently on 4 or 5 occasions. The average annual cumulative incidence was 5%, and the recovery rate was 38%. In mutual adjusted analysis

BACKGROUND: Despite enormous differences between acute and chronic pain, the numeric pain scale (NRS) is commonly used in pain research and clinical practice for assessing the intensity of both acute and chronic pain. The use of this scale has been challenged as it may fail to accurately reflect the pure intensity of chronic pain.
AIM: To compare the effect of anchoring the NRS on the intensity of pain reported by patients with acute vs. chronic pain.
METHODS: Patients with acute postoperative or chronic pain (n = 100/group) were requested to rate their: current clinical pain intensity on an

OBJECTIVE: Further research is needed to understand how pain frequency, localization of pain and the patient's conviction of the cause of pain effects long-term outcome after gallstone surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort study was conducted based on patients evaluated with SF-36 along with three single-items focusing on gallstone specific symptoms. The physical component summary (PCS) and bodily pain (BP) of SF-36 were used as main outcome measures. To assess the improvement from the procedure, the differences between the preoperative and postoperative ratings were tested with univariate

BACKGROUND: In healthy individuals slow temporal summation of pain or wind-up (WU) can be evoked by repetitive heat-pulses at frequencies of ≥.33 Hz. Previous WU studies have used various stimulus frequencies and intensities to characterize central sensitization of human subjects including fibromyalgia (FM) patients. However, many trials demonstrated considerable WU-variability including zero WU or even wind-down (WD) at stimulus intensities sufficient for activating C-nociceptors. Additionally, few WU-protocols have controlled for contributions of individual pain sensitivity to WU-magnitude,

BACKGROUND: It is commonly stated that nerve root pain should be expected to follow a specific dermatome and that this information is useful to make the diagnosis of radiculopathy. There is little evidence in the literature that confirms or denies this statement. The purpose of this study is to describe and discuss the diagnostic utility of the distribution of pain in patients with cervical and lumbar radicular pain.
METHODS: Pain drawings and descriptions were assessed in consecutive patients diagnosed with cervical or lumbar nerve root pain. These findings were compared with accepted dermat

CONTEXT: Pain is distressing for women with breast cancer. Pain medication may not provide full relief and can have negative side-effects. Cognitive-behavioral pain intervention protocols reduce pain severity and improve self-efficacy for pain management. These interventions' impact on pain medication use is less clear. Intervention length and coping skills use might play a role in pain outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: Secondary analysis to examine differences in pain severity, pain medication use, pain self-efficacy, and coping skill use after five- and one-session cognitive-behavioral pain interventio

PURPOSE: The pain beliefs and perceptions inventory (PBPI) and the pain catastrophizing scales (PCS) characterize beliefs or distress dimensions of the pain experience. It is relatively unknown, however, to what degree the PBPI and the PCS are well suited to classifying pain intensity.
METHODS: This study applied a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) approach to these instruments against the criterion of a visual analogue scale (VAS) of pain intensity with fibromyalgia and chronic back pain patients (n = 419).
RESULTS: The largest areas under the curve (AUC) were moderate and limited to

Background: The assessment of pain and its impact on quality of life is central to the evaluation of chronic pain syndromes. However, most available tools focus on the nociceptive experience of pain, and at best only consider the occurrence of anxious, depressive, or cognitive problems. Here is a new questionnaire aimed at measuring the multifaceted impact of pain in chronic pain syndromes, the Bodily and Emotional pErception of Pain (BEEP). Methods: All consecutive patients who accessed a center for the treatment of pain were invited to take part in the study. The sample included 222 particip

AIMS: To investigate the relationships between three pain parameters (duration, intensity, and frequency), the number of pain sites and comorbidities, and the risk of having coexisting pain and/or comorbidities in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 198 outpatients attending the Dental Hospital of Chulalongkorn University. TMD pain was determined using the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. Pain lasting 3 months or longer was defined as chronic pain. Pain intensity was reflected using a 0- to 10-point numeric rating scale, and pain frequency was ass

UNLABELLED: Considerable evidence has linked catastrophizing to pain responses, and recent experimental pain research has suggested that situational catastrophizing, measured during or immediately after laboratory pain procedures, is strongly related to pain ratings of standardized noxious stimuli. However, given that most experimental pain protocols involve "static" assessments of pain ratings and catastrophizing at a single time point, the direction by which these factors may affect each other remains unclear. Does catastrophizing influences one's subsequent pain responses or do individual d

Although sleep problems are common in patients with chronic pain, it is unclear whether pain mediates (causes) impaired sleep. The relationship between pain and sleep has been difficult to investigate because of the potential confounds of depression and somnolence. This report used clinical trials data for duloxetine in the management of diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP) to investigate the direction of this association. Data were pooled from three double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, 12-week trials of patients with DPNP without mood disorder (n=1,139). DPNP patients reportin

OBJECTIVES: To further explore the controversy as to whether childhood molestation is associated with chronic pain in adulthood.
DESIGN: Community nonpatients without pain (CNPWP), community patients with pain (CPWP), acute pain patients (APPs), and chronic pain patients (CPPs) were compared for endorsement of affirmation of childhood molestation by chi-square. Logistic regression was utilized to predict affirmation in male and female CPPs.
RESULTS: A significantly higher percentage of male APPs affirmed molestation versus CNPWP and CPWP. No other comparisons were statistically significant f

BACKGROUND: The NeuPSIG diagnostic algorithm is regarded as the reference framework for the diagnosis of neuropathic pain. It is based on a hierarchical model in which diagnostic certainty increases with the presumed objectivity of the evidence, progressing from patient-reported symptoms to clinical examination and, ultimately, to confirmatory tests demonstrating a neurological lesion.
METHODS: In this position paper, we critically examine the conceptual foundations of this framework. We argue that the distinction between subjective and objective evidence is less clear-cut than assumed, as so

to explore a paradigm shift in the definition of opioid-responsive cancer pain in this hypothesis-driven review. Opioid-responsive cancer pain may be misplaced within the definition of chronic pain, chronic pain takes three months to establish, early effective control is worthwhile to achieve. RECENT: findings, from a bench-to-bed perspective, debates the interpretation of results supporting the hypothesis that opioid-responsive cancer pain could remain 'constant acute pain', with explanations, best solutions, for tolerance and/or addiction, in cancer patients compared to those with chronic pa

Black Americans report more intense and disabling pain than White Americans, but differences in pain behavior have rarely been studied. The Structured Pain Behavior Test (SPBT), a standardized, video-recorded series of pain-inducing movements, assesses the behavioral expression of pain. We conducted the first test of whether Black Americans with chronic low back pain (CLBP) have greater pain behavior and increased self-reported pain intensity during the SPBT, compared to White Americans. Adults (N = 267) with CLBP (174 Black, 93 White; 57% female) rated their clinical pain severity and interfe
