Gut microbes play a dynamic role in many metabolic and physiological activities in insects. Recent studies have shown the difference in the gut microbiota associated with both sex and geographical locations. Deciphering the gut microbiota hosted with respect to their function in an economic pest like pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella, is essential to understand the relationship between insect and its gut microbiome. In the present study, culturable midgut bacteria were isolated from Bt cotton resistant P. gossypiella larvae (male and female) collected from different cotton growing region

Biofilms pose major challenges to milk quality and safety, yet their composition in the dairy environment remains under-characterized. This study investigated the prevalence and composition of biofilms on milking system surfaces in commercial dairy farms, focusing on Pseudomonadota, a dominant phylum in raw milk. We sampled bulk tank raw milk (BTRM), tap water, and milking equipment surfaces after cleaning from 20 dairy farms in Québec, Canada, using S1 milk agar, specifically designed to target Pseudomonadota through a culturomics approach. A total of 474 colonies were selected and identified

The consortium inoculation with strains R1 and R4 modified the root system to boost seedling growth, increase the zinc content of French bean pods, and reduce salinity stress. The present study demonstrated the effect of two 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase-producing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (Pantoea agglomerans R1 and Pseudomonas fragi R4) alone and consortia on the root system development, French bean growth, and zinc content as well as salinity stress tolerance. Both the strains were characterized for ACC utilization activity (426.23 and 380.54 nmol α-ketobu

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is recognized as an emerging and growing public health problem worldwide. In Tunisia, knowledge is still limited to domestic animals and humans, and only few data are available regarding the role of wildlife. This research determined the antibiotic susceptibility profiles of Beta-lactamase producing Gram-negative bacteria isolated from the faeces of 110 wild boars (Sus scrofa) in northern Tunisia. Fecal samples, obtained post mortem from boar carcasses, were cultured on MacConkey agar and MacConkey agar containing 2 mg/L of cefotaxime. A total of 102 Enterobacter

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming an increasing global concern and the anaerobic digestion (AD) process represents a potential transmission route when digestates are used as fertilizing agents. AMR contaminants, e.g. antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and plasmid-mediated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been found in different substrates and AD systems, but not yet been investigated in plant-based substrates. AMR transfer from soils to vegetable microbiomes has been observed, and thus crop material potentially represents a so far neglected AMR load in agricultural AD processe

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is caused by Leishmania parasites and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected sand flies. Development of Leishmania to infective metacyclic promastigotes occurs within the sand fly gut where the gut microbiota influences development of the parasite. Paratransgenesis is a new control method in which symbiotic bacteria are isolated, transformed and reintroduced into the gut through their diet to express anti-parasitic molecules. In the present study, the midgut microbiota of three sand fly species from a steppe and a mountainous region of northern Iran, wh

Between September 2001 and March 2013, 62 bacterial cultures (37 aerobic and 25 anaerobic) were performed on 37 blood samples from 23 Antillean manatees ( Trichechus manatus manatus) that were kept in captivity at the Brazilian National Center for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammals (CMA) in Pernambuco (CMA-PE) and Alagoas (CMA-AL), Brazil. All of the animals sampled exhibited clinical signs at the time of sampling including abscesses (n = 8), debilitation and anorexia (n = 22), and profound lethargy-moribundity (n = 7). The 4 animals with profound lethargy-moribundity died shortly af

BACKGROUND: The natural interactions between plant roots and their rhizospheric microbiome are vital to plant fitness, modulating both growth promotion and disease suppression. In rice (Oryza sativa), a globally important food crop, as much as 30% of yields are lost due to blast disease caused by fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae. Capitalizing on the abilities of naturally occurring rice soil bacteria to reduce M. oryzae infections could provide a sustainable solution to reduce the amount of crops lost to blast disease.
RESULTS: Naturally occurring root-associated rhizospheric bacteria were

HIGHLIGHTS: To use Vitamin C during processing of homograft heart valve can reduce the amount of residual antibiotics and prevents its consequences.
OBJECTIVE: The removal of residual antibiotics from whole homograft tissues after disinfection is a matter of concern. To avoid bacteriostasis, which causes falsely negative culture results, we investigated the effectiveness of a novel method applicable to whole homografts.
METHODS: Thirty homografts, assessed as unsuitable for transplantation, were obtained from 24 deceased donors. Fourteen days after freezing, each homograft was thawed and div

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) present in animal feed represent a significant threat to human health via the food chain, and pesticide application in crop production may further accelerate the ARGs dissemination. Corn silage, a primary forage for herbivorous livestock, has been shown to harbor diverse ARGs; however, the impact of pesticide-induced stress and potential mitigation strategies on ARG proliferation remains poorly understood. This study investigated the mechanistic link between nicosulfuron exposure and ARG dynamics in corn silage, as well as the mitigating effects of zinc oxide

Members of the Erwiniaceae family, which can be found saprophytic in humans, have been identified several times as an infectious agent after their first identification in 1920. Erwinia persicina was first identified as a plant pathogen by being isolated from cucumber, tomato and banana in 1990, and it was shown to cause disease in many plant species in the following years. E.persicina was diagnosed as a urinary tract infection agent in an 88-year-old female patient in 1998. Our case, a 30-year-old male patient, was hospitalized for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma while being examined with the com

Recent reports have shown an increase in the rate of Gram-negative bacteremia in several settings, including catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI). To analyze if the epidemiology of CRBSI is also changing in hemodialysis patients, we revisited the etiology of CRBSIs in our renal unit over 8 years. During the observed periods, 149 episodes of CRBSIs were reported and the CRBSI incidence rate, ranged between 0.67 and 0.82 episodes/1000 tCVC days. Of these 149 episodes, 84 (56.3%) were due to Gram-positive bacteria, 62 (41.6%) to Gram-negative bacteria, and 3 (2.1%) to polymicrobial flo

Tularemia is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis. The disease can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected animals such as the European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) and ticks as vectors. The aim of this study was to isolate F. tularensis from ticks and hares in North Rhine-Westphalia using cysteine heart agar to determine their genetic relatedness and to identify other bacteria that grow on this medium. 848 European brown hares and 1556 questing ticks (all Ixodes ricinus) from forests were tested using cultivation and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry or p

The aim of this study was to elucidate whether and to what extent fresh produce from Germany plays a role as a carrier and reservoir of antibiotic resistant bacteria. For this purpose, 1001 vegetables (fruit, root, bulbous vegetables, salads and cereals) were collected from 13 farms and 11 supermarkets in Germany and examined bacteriologically. Phenotypic resistance of Enterobacter cloacae (n=172); Enterobacter gergoviae (n=92); Pantoea agglomerans (n=96); Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n=295); Pseudomonas putida (n=106) and Enterococcus faecalis (n=100) against up to 30 antibiotics was determined by

The microbiome is increasingly recognized as a key factor of the plasticity of host life-history traits. Using the Caenorhabditis elegans model system, we examined how naturally associated bacterial strains affect internal egg hatching, a stress-adaptive reproductive strategy in this species. Among the bacterial strains tested, four strains (Ochrobactrum BH3, Lelliottia JUb66, Pantoea BIGb0393, and Enterobacter CEent1) induced high levels of internal hatching (28-57%) in C. elegans during late adulthood, compared to <5% in animals grown on E. coli OP50. These effects were accompanied by extend

BACKGROUND: Parasitic plants are affected by various abiotic stressors including water and drought stress, fluctuations or extremes of temperature, salinity, mineral deficiencies or toxic concentrations of heavy metals in soils. While the molecular mechanisms and the ecological roles of these parasitic angiosperms have been well-studied, their responses to abiotic stress remain poorly understood. This study explores the relationship between environmental metal stress and the seed endophytic bacterial community of the holoparasitic plant Orobanche lutea Baumg. (Orobanchaceae). RESULTS: Our find
