Globally optimal co-segmentation of three-dimensional pulmonary ¹H and hyperpolarized ³He MRI with spatial consistence prior.

Pulmonary imaging using hyperpolarized (3)He/(129)Xe gas is emerging as a new way to understand the regional nature of pulmonary ventilation abnormalities in obstructive lung diseases. However, the quantitative information derived is completely dependent on robust methods to segment both functional and structural/anatomical data. Here, we propose an approach to jointly segment the lung cavity from (1)H and (3)He pulmonary magnetic resonance images (MRI) by constraining the spatial consistency of the two segmentation regions, which simultaneously employs the image features from both modalities.

A generic approach to pathological lung segmentation.

In this study, we propose a novel pathological lung segmentation method that takes into account neighbor prior constraints and a novel pathology recognition system. Our proposed framework has two stages; during stage one, we adapted the fuzzy connectedness (FC) image segmentation algorithm to perform initial lung parenchyma extraction. In parallel, we estimate the lung volume using rib-cage information without explicitly delineating lungs. This rudimentary, but intelligent lung volume estimation system allows comparison of volume differences between rib cage and FC based lung volume measuremen

Development of a Low-Cost Portable Exhaled Breath Ammonia Detector for Supplementary Five-Stage CKD Classification Using Embedded Threshold Logic.

Conventional diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) relies predominantly on invasive blood-based examinations, limiting the scalability of kidney health screening in resource-constrained environments. This study presents embedded engineering framework for non-invasive, breath-based CKD staging framework supported by machine learning and implemented on a low-cost embedded platform. To account for physiological sex differences in baseline creatinine production, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values and breath ammonia concentrations were derived from two independent clinical cohor

A new method based on deep learning and image processing for detection of strabismus with the Hirschberg test.

Strabismus is a condition in which one or both eyes do not work in parallel or in harmony. People with strabismus have one eye looking straight ahead while the other eye looks inwards, outwards, upwards or downwards. This condition can affect both eyes. Strabismus is a common eye condition that affects about 4 % of the world's population. Tests such as Hirschberg, Cover and Krimsky are used to detect strabismus. In the Hirschberg test, a light source is held at a distance of 50 cm so that it falls on the centre of each eye. The horizontal and vertical distance between the centre of gravity of

Distinct phenotype of primary sclerosing cholangitis-associated inflammatory bowel disease.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is frequently accompanied by colitis with clinicopathologic features that differ from conventional inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Accumulating evidence indicates that PSC-associated IBD (PSC-IBD) often presents as extensive colitis with a right-sided predominant distribution and characteristic endoscopic features, such as rectal sparing and backwash ileitis. Beyond endoscopic appearance, PSC-IBD also appears to have distinct biological underpinnings, including shared genetic susceptibility, dysregulated bile acid signaling, altered gut microbial communit

Assessing the impact of batch effect associated missing values on downstream analysis in high-throughput biomedical data.

Batch effect associated missing values (BEAMs) are batch-wide missingness induced from the integration of data with different coverage of biomedical features. BEAMs can present substantial challenges in data analysis. This study investigates how BEAMs impact missing value imputation (MVI) and batch effect (BE) correction algorithms (BECAs). Through simulations and analyses of real-world datasets including the Clinical Proteomic Tumour Analysis Consortium (CPTAC), we evaluated six MVI methods: K-nearest neighbors (KNN), Mean, MinProb, Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), Multivariate Imputation

Serological proteomic characterization for monitoring liver fibrosis regression in chronic hepatitis B patients on treatment.

Longitudinal serological proteomic dynamics during antiviral therapy (AVT) in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with liver fibrosis remain poorly characterized. Here, using four-dimensional data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry (4D-DIA-MS), paired liver biopsy (LBx)-proven serum samples from 130 CHB liver fibrosis patients undergoing short-term (78 weeks) or long-term (260 weeks) AVT are analyzed. Our findings show that prolonged AVT drives progressive serological proteomic remodeling in fibrosis regressors, characterized by a temporal inversion in the activation of the complement an

Treating Primary Aldosteronism-Induced Hypertension: Novel Approaches and Future Outlooks.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the most common cause of secondary hypertension and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality when compared with blood pressure-matched cases of primary hypertension. Current limitations in patient care stem from delayed recognition of the condition, limited access to key diagnostic procedures, and lack of a definitive therapy option for nonsurgical candidates. However, several recent advances have the potential to address these barriers to optimal care. From a diagnostic perspective, machine-learning algorithms have shown promise in the prediction of P

Metaproteomic Analysis of Nasopharyngeal Swab Samples to Identify Microbial Peptides in COVID-19 Patients.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, impaired immunity and medical interventions resulted in cases of secondary infections. The clinical difficulties and dangers associated with secondary infections in patients necessitate the exploration of their microbiome. Metaproteomics is a powerful approach to study the taxonomic composition and functional status of the microbiome under study. In this study, the mass spectrometry (MS)-based data of nasopharyngeal swab samples from COVID-19 patients was used to investigate the metaproteome. We have established a robust bioinformatics workflow within the Galaxy p

Magnetic Resonance Current Density Imaging (MR-CDI).

Current density imaging (CDI) was developed with the aim of determining the three-dimensional distribution of externally applied electric current pathways inside a conductive medium, using measurements of magnetic flux density [Formula: see text] data. While the B field may be measurable using instruments such as a magnetometer, in magnetic resonance current density imaging (MR-CDI), an MRI scanner is used to measure the magnetic flux density data induced by current flow. In MR-CDI, the object must be rotated inside the MRI machine to find all three components of the B-field, as only the compo

TF-Test Quantified: a new technique for diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni eggs.

OBJECTIVES: Laboratory diagnosis of Schistosoma mansoni eggs is routinely performed by conventional quantitative techniques through the parasitological examination of human faeces. However, the diagnostic sensitivity of this type of exam varies from low to moderate. We aimed to develop a new parasitological technique called TF-Test Quantified (TFT-Quant), for the quantitative detection of S. mansoni eggs in human faeces. METHODS: Four study stages were performed using 43 mice infected by S. mansoni cercariae. These experiments allowed the definition of an operational protocol for TFT-Quant an

A cellular nonlinear network: real-time technology for the analysis of microfluidic phenomena in blood vessels.

A new approach to the observation and analysis of dynamic structural and functional parameters in the microcirculation is described. The new non-invasive optical system is based on cellular nonlinear networks (CNNs), highly integrated analogue processor arrays whose processing elements, the cells, interact directly within a finite local neighbourhood. CNNs, thanks to their parallel processing feature and spatially distributed structure, are widely used to solve high-speed image processing and recognition problems and in the description and modelling of biological dynamics through the solution

Current Management of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2-Positive Breast Cancer in a Changing Landscape.

Over the past three decades, the treatment of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once associated with poor outcomes and a median survival of <2 years in the metastatic setting, HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer is at present increasingly managed for years, with long-term survival beyond 5 years becoming common. Parallel advances in early-stage therapy have substantially reduced recurrence rates and altered the clinical landscape of metastatic disease, with a growing proportion of patients currently presenting w

Treatment strategies for postoperative locoregional recurrent esophageal squamous cell carcinoma after curative resection: a narrative review.

Recurrence following curative esophagectomy remains a major clinical challenge and is associated with poor prognosis. Treatment strategies for postoperative recurrent esophageal squamous cell carcinoma must be individualized based on recurrence patterns, prior treatment history, and patient-related factors. Locoregional recurrence and oligo-recurrence in some non-regional lymph nodes may still be amenable to curative-intent therapy, including salvage surgery and definitive chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Selection of optimal treatment should consider tumor burden, performance status, and prior radiat

Infrared and Visible Image Fusion Using Bimodal Neuron and Dynamic Receptive Field Mechanisms.

Infrared and visible image fusion (IVIF) significantly enhances scene interpretation by integrating broad-spectrum information. Drawing inspiration from specific snakes that possess an evolutionarily optimized bimodal sensory system capable of parallel processing infrared and visible radiation, we propose a novel IVIF framework incorporating two key elements: nonlinear cross-modal interactions across six distinct classes of snake bimodal neurons and dynamic center-surround receptive field organization. These biological principles are mathematically formalized and integrated within a deep neura
