Discovery of Respiratory Pathogens in People Living With HIV in the African Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory infection outbreaks pose a threat to the readiness of the United States and allied armed forces. Predicting and preventing such outbreaks requires understanding of the epidemiology of potential respiratory pathogens in communities where service members live and work. We conducted pan-viral surveillance of respiratory specimens from people living with HIV or without HIV but under the risk enrolled in the U.S. Military HIV Research Program's African Cohort Study to determine the prevalence and possible clinical presentation of viruses in this population. METHODS: The A

Occurrence of multiple respiratory viruses in wastewater in Queensland, Australia: Potential for community disease surveillance.

The early warning and tracking of COVID-19 prevalence in the community provided by wastewater surveillance has highlighted its potential for much broader viral disease surveillance. In this proof-of-concept study, 46 wastewater samples from four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Queensland, Australia, were analyzed for the presence and abundance of 13 respiratory viruses, and the results were compared with reported clinical cases. The viruses were concentrated using the adsorption-extraction (AE) method, and extracted nucleic acids were analyzed using qPCR and RT-qPCR. Among the viruses t

ACBD3 interaction with TBC1 domain 22 protein is differentially affected by enteroviral and kobuviral 3A protein binding.

UNLABELLED: Despite wide sequence divergence, multiple picornaviruses use the Golgi adaptor acyl coenzyme A (acyl-CoA) binding domain protein 3 (ACBD3/GCP60) to recruit phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase class III beta (PI4KIIIβ/PI4KB), a factor required for viral replication. The molecular basis of this convergent interaction and the cellular function of ACBD3 are not fully understood. Using affinity purification-mass spectrometry, we identified the putative Rab33 GTPase-activating proteins TBC1D22A and TBC1D22B as ACBD3-interacting factors. Fine-scale mapping of binding determinants within ACBD3

Association of Encephalitis With Viruses in Cerebrospinal Fluid in Children: A Case Series.

Introduction The application of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis has enabled the direct detection of neuropathogenic viruses in patients with meningitis or encephalitis. However, the presence of a virus in the CSF does not necessarily confirm a diagnosis of encephalitis. Clinical judgment is required to determine whether neurological follow-up is warranted. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of encephalitis among patients with viral detection in CSF and to evaluate the relationship between viral load and disease occurrence. Methods Patients under

Associations between pathogens in the upper respiratory tract of young children: interplay between viruses and bacteria.

BACKGROUND: High rates of potentially pathogenic bacteria and respiratory viruses can be detected in the upper respiratory tract of healthy children. Investigating presence of and associations between these pathogens in healthy individuals is still a rather unexplored field of research, but may have implications for interpreting findings during disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We selected 986 nasopharyngeal samples from 433 6- to 24-month-old healthy children that had participated in a randomized controlled trial. We determined the presence of 20 common respiratory viruses using real-

Association of zoonotic Ljungan virus with intrauterine fetal deaths.

BACKGROUND: It has recently been shown that Ljungan virus (LV) is associated with disease in its wild rodent reservoir. In addition, it has been demonstrated that LV causes malformations and perinatal death in a mouse model. The question was therefore raised whether LV is a zoonotic agent in humans. METHODS: Population fluctuations of native rodents in Sweden were compared to the incidence of intrauterine fetal deaths (IUFDs) using the Swedish national hospitalization database. Formalin-fixed tissues from cases of IUFD were investigated using LV-specific immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Variat

Bioinformatics-based screening tool identifies a wide variety of human and zoonotic viruses in Trujillo-Peru wastewater.

Peru was one of the most affected countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, multiple other viral diseases (enteric, respiratory, bloodborne, and vector-borne) are endemic and rising. According to Peru's Ministry of Health, various health facilities in the country were reallocated for the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby leading to reduced action to curb other diseases. Many viral diseases in the area are under-reported and not recognized. The One Health approach, in addition to clinical testing, incorporates environmental surveillance for detection of infectious disease outbreaks. The purpos
