Fibrous Dysplasia With 99m Tc-FAPI Uptake in a Patient Under Long-term Antiresorptive Therapy.

We report a rare case of a 40-year-old woman with longstanding craniofacial fibrous dysplasia involving the right maxilla, orbital cavity, and fronto-parietal bones. The patient underwent partial maxillary debulking 7 years ago for cosmetic reasons and orbital decompression 3 years ago, and is currently on long-term antiresorptive therapy. Bone scintigraphy with 99mTc-MDP showed multiple sites of increased osteoblastic activity. 99mTc-FAPI SPECT/CT also revealed focal uptake in craniofacial and other lesions, indicating active fibroblast proliferation. This is the first reported case of 99mTc-

Facial asymmetry: an X-ray study.

On the basis of an assessment of cranial anteroposterior X-ray films in 38 normal adult males were analyzed facial asymmetries at the frontal plane. It was demonstrated that facial asymmetries are of a fluctuating type with the slightest asymmetries in the region of the upper face, somewhat larger deviations of mandibular characteristics and with most marked asymmetries in the region of the cranial vault. Thus neither of the two sides of the face predominates significantly over the other side. The differences are only of individual character.

Self-mutilation resulting in bacterial meningitis.

Self-mutilation and particularly self-destructive dermatoses are not usually life-threatening. This case involves a man who met the DSM-III R diagnostic criteria for delusional (paranoid) disorder, somatic type. His destructive behavior involving the face and scalp resulted in osteomyelitis and pneumococcal meningitis. He responded to treatment initially, but was later lost to follow-up. No similar case of self-mutilation has been reported.

[Growing skull fracture with rapid growth: a case report].

A case of growing skull fracture with rapid growth is presented. A 4-month-old male fell and struck the right side of his head. Skull X-ray just after injury showed a right parietotemporal linear skull fracture with the maximum width of 4 mm. The width of the fracture line increased to 9 mm 7 hours after injury. Serial CT scan demonstrated growth of contusional hematoma just beneath of the fracture. Six days later, a pulsatile mass was palpated beneath the scalp, although neurological state was normal. The width of the fracture line was demonstrated to increase up to 11 mm on X-ray at that tim

Altered bone growth dynamics prefigure craniosynostosis in a zebrafish model of Saethre-Chotzen syndrome.

Cranial sutures separate the skull bones and house stem cells for bone growth and repair. In Saethre-Chotzen syndrome, mutations in TCF12 or TWIST1 ablate a specific suture, the coronal. This suture forms at a neural-crest/mesoderm interface in mammals and a mesoderm/mesoderm interface in zebrafish. Despite this difference, we show that combinatorial loss of TCF12 and TWIST1 homologs in zebrafish also results in specific loss of the coronal suture. Sequential bone staining reveals an initial, directional acceleration of bone production in the mutant skull, with subsequent localized stalling of

Scanning electron microscope analysis of gunshot defects to bone: an underutilized source of information on ballistic trauma.

Recent years have seen increasing involvement by forensic anthropologists in the interpretation of skeletal trauma. With regard to ballistic injuries, there is now a large literature detailing gross features of such trauma; however, less attention has been given to microscopic characteristics. This article presents analysis of experimentally induced gunshot trauma in animal bone (Bos taurus scapulae) using full metal jacket (FMJ), soft point (SP), and captive bolt projectiles. The results were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additional analysis was conducted on a purported p

Strip ostectomy and radical ostectomy in the treatment of craniosynostosis. An experimental animal study.

In an experimental animal study using rabbits, growth phenomena were simulated which are comparable to craniosynostosis in humans. The radiological and histological findings after surgical management of these artificial craniosynostosis by means of strip ostectomy or radical ostectomy were compared with the findings obtained in control animals. Following strip ostectomy, bone defects were rapidly filled by the formation of suture-like structures. After radical ostectomy, structures consisting of connective tissue dispersed among islands of ossification were preserved over a considerable period

Bone Health ECHO Case Report: Is it Paget's Disease?

A 54-year-old woman was referred by her rheumatologist for evaluation of an elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the setting of polyarthritis. The metabolic work-up was significant for an elevated bone fraction of alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes, and high bone turnover markers, including fasting C- telopeptide (CTX). A diagnosis of Paget's disease of bone (PDB) was considered. A whole-body nuclear bone scan showed diffuse increased uptake in the calvarium, suggestive of PDB, with no other localizing areas of increased uptake. Skull X-rays show mild sclerosis and medullary expansion of

Aesthetic correction of a hypertrophic sinus frontalis: a long-term follow-up evaluation and refinement of the method.

Two cases treated for hypertrophy of the frontal sinus are presented. In both patients, the excised frontal bone was inverted, and the resultant cavity was filled with either bone dust from the parietal region or Medpor. The first patient is shown with an excellent result after a follow-up period of 16 years. The second patient, who also achieved an excellent result, is presented after a follow-up period of 5 years. Using Medpor instead of bone dust resulted in the advantage that the operation could be performed with the patient under local anesthesia with sedation and prevention of an additio

Establishment of artificial intelligence-driven fluorescence morphometry reveals involvement of osteocyte perilacunar remodeling specifically in mandibular bone of ovariectomized rats.

Bone dynamically changes its shape and structure in response to extra-tissue environments, so that bone morphometry has been a substantial method to evaluate pathophysiology of bone. Osteocytes embedded in mineralized bone matrix play key roles in systemic bone metabolism and characterize distinct bone sites. The jawbone has been described as a unique bone in the context of vertebrate evolution and function. Bone loss in the mandibular bone is less obvious in osteoporotic conditions than in other bones, such as vertebral and limb long bones, both in animal models and in clinical studies. Since

Destructive bone disease in early syphilis.

Although destructive bone disease is a well-known complication of tertiary syphilis, osteitis or osteomyelitis are not commonly recognized as complications of early (primary or secondary) syphillis. A patient with secondary syphilis characterized by generalized lymphadenopathy, perianal condyloma lata, and positive rapid plasma reagin (RPR) and fluorescent treponemal antibody-absorption (FTA-ABS) tests also complained of headache, right should pain, and right anterior chest pain and swelling. Roentgenograms showed mottled osteolytic lesions consistent with previously described luetic bone dise

Predictors of Middle Meningeal Artery-Related Vascular Diseases Associated with Blunt Head Trauma.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic middle meningeal artery (MMA)-middle meningeal vein (MMV) fistula (MMA-MMV fistula) and MMA pseudoaneurysm are the 2 main MMA-related vascular diseases occurring after blunt head trauma. These are rare but known causes of delayed intracranial hemorrhage. This study investigated predictors that may aid in the diagnosis of these diseases. METHODS: In our department, screening digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is performed for patients with blunt head trauma accompanied by intracranial hemorrhage and skull or facial bone fracture. This study included 87 patients who unde

Skull fracture during instrumental delivery using spatulas: A case report with CT-scan imaging.

Neonatal skull fracture is rare and instrumental delivery is one of the risk factors. We present a case of parietal bone fracture in a term newborn with Thierry's spatulas who benefited from a 3D brain scan. If many cases have been reported with the use of forceps whatever their type, our case is to our knowledge the first one described with spatulas.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp extending to the skull: A case report and review of the literature.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the scalp has increased prevalence in older patients and often presents later in life. Mohs micrographic surgery remains the most effective treatment in most cases. Delayed presentation may result in localized bony invasion or distant metastases. We present a case of an elderly woman presenting with extension of SCC into the parietal bone of the skull.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Scalp With Intracranial Extension: Challenging Case of Multidisciplinary Care.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the scalp is the second most common non-melanoma cancer of the skin. The incidence of squamous cell carcinoma on the scalp is on the rise, but the intracranial extension is rare. Cranial invasion is rare in SCC of the scalp, but when present, it is associated with a poor prognosis. A 62-year-old female presented with complaints of swelling over the back of her scalp for three months, which rapidly increased in size. She also had a throbbing headache, alopecia in that area, and multiple episodes of pustules in that area. On examination, she had an ulceroprolifer

Analysis of Craniomaxillofacial Malformations in Mice Using Three-dimensional Microcomputed Tomography.

To model craniofacial malformations caused by vitamin A deficiency (VAD), we expressed a dominant-negative retinoid receptor mutation in osteoblasts to specifically inhibit RAR transcriptional activity in mice. This approach allowed us to investigate the effects of VAD on cranial hypomineralization, mandibular deformity, and clavicular hypoplasia in clinical cases. In this study, microcomputed tomography (microCT) scanning of the craniomaxillofacial region of mice represented a valuable tool for studying the growth and development of this animal model. The manual estimation of images is both t

[Development and growth of the vault of the skull].

The vault of the skull is a region of the neurocranium formed by a process of membranous ossification. It consists of several bones: frontal bone, parietal bone, squamous part of the temporal bone, lamina ascendens of the sphenoid, and interparietal bone. The embryological origin of the bones of the skull vault is still the subject of controversy. This can be explained by the different animal models used for these purposes, but also by the various techniques applied to this problem. At all events, it seems that the cells of the neural crest generate some of the bones of the vault and that the

[Post-traumatic lumbar hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction technique. A case report].

INTRODUCTION: Little less than half of the occurrences acquired lumbar hernias are caused by traumatisms: direct parietal contusions, iliac crest biopsies or fractures. Regarding their frequency, they are rare but generally underdiagnosed. Abdominal wall reconstruction is motivated by the risk of hernia strangulation, but also aims to rebuild continent abdominal muscles, allowing the loss of discomfort or worsening risk as well as to resume physical activities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report a case of parietal reconstruction of a traumatism-induced lumbar hernia in a 59-year-old male patient
