Acute suppurative thyroiditis caused by Pasteurella multocida and associated with thyrotoxicosis.

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is an uncommon condition of the thyroid gland. Organisms of the staphylococcal and streptococcal species are the most commonly reported causative agents. Rarely, AST has been associated with transient hyperthyroidism. We report a unique case of AST that was caused by Pasteurella multocida and was associated with thyrotoxicosis in a previously healthy 51-year-old woman.

An outbreak of Pasteurella pneumotropica in genetically modified mice: treatment and elimination.

A closed breeding colony comprising genetically engineered, wild-type, and stock mice presented with varying degrees of bilateral mucopurulent conjunctivitis and panophthalmitis. The one mouse with unilateral corneal ulceration, a knockout animal, was submitted for necropsy, and bacterial culture samples were obtained from the affected eye and uterus. In addition, ocular swabs from another 12 clinically affected animals, consisting of knockout, transgenic, wild-type, and stock mice, were submitted for bacterial culture analysis. All samples revealed pure cultures of Pasteurella pneumotropica.

[Pasteurella spp: a new microorganism to the cause of acute suppurative thyroiditis].

Acute suppurative thyroiditis is an uncommon disease due to local resistance of the gland to infection. Preexisting gland pathology and local anatomic abnormalities are predisposing factors. We present the first case described in the medical literature caused by Pasteurella spp after upper respiratory infection with insidious manifestations resembling subacute thyroiditis. The course was benign after surgical drainage.

Pasteurella multocida meningitis in infancy - (a lick may be as bad as a bite).

UNLABELLED: Pasteurella multocida is the commonest cause of local infection after an animal bite, but is an unusual cause of meningitis. We report a case of P. multocida meningitis occurring in a 7-week-old infant which was contracted after non-traumatic contact with a household pet, that is, without any animal bite or scratch. The organism may be easily confused with more common Gram-negative pathogens. In this case, it was initially incorrectly diagnosed as Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib); a possibility which has important implications in the era of routine use of Hib vaccine in infant i

Comparison of the recombinant and authentic forms of the Pasteurella haemolytica A1 glycoprotease.

The O-sialoglycoprotein endopeptidase (glycoprotease, Gcp) is secreted by Pasteurella haemolytica A1, a Gram-negative pathogen associated with bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis. When the cloned gcp gene is expressed in Escherichia coli, the recombinant glycoprotease (rGcp) is exported to the periplasm but does not exhibit enzymatic activity. Polyclonal calf sera and murine monoclonal antibodies to rGcp were used for the further immunological and biochemical characterization of the authentic and recombinant Gcp. The results showed that the gcp gene product is the sole component of Gcp activity. H

The goat as a model for studies of pneumonic pasteurellosis caused by Pasteurella multocida.

A model of pneumonic pasteurellosis has been established in goats using Pasteurella multocida harvested from pneumonic lungs of goats (types A and D), rabbits (type A) and sheep (type D). The resultant infections were acute, subacute or chronic. The gross and histological lesions of the subacute and chronic infections were typical of pneumonic pasteurellosis. P. multocida type D produced significantly (P < 0.01) more severe lesions when compared with other isolates. There were strong correlations between the clinical signs and the severity of lesions.

Pasteurella multocida pneumonia in a man with AIDS and nontraumatic feline exposure.

A case of acute pneumonia due to Pasteurella multocida ssp multocida occurred in a young man with AIDS and chronic sinusitis. The pneumonia was diagnosed by bronchoscopy and responded to treatment with aztreonam. Epidemiologic investigation revealed the case was temporally related to nontraumatic exposure to cat secretions that the patient presumably had acquired via an aerosol. The cat's oral cavity was cultured and an isolate of P multocida ssp multocida with identical biochemical reactions, DNA restriction patterns, and nearly identical fatty acid profile to that of the patient's isolate wa

Cloning and expression of a 30 kDa surface antigen of Pasteurella haemolytica.

Pasteurella haemolytica biotype A serotype 1 is the principal etiologic agent of bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis. A clear understanding of the pathogenesis of this disease and the mechanisms of resistance to it has been limited by a lack of information on the important antigens of the organisms. Using recombinant DNA techniques we have cloned a segment of DNA from P. haemolytica A1 that encodes three proteins of 28, 30, and 32 kDa. Two of these proteins, 30 and 28 kDa, react strongly on a Western blot with a bovine serum raised against live cells of P. haemolytica A1. The gene for the 30 kDa p

Pasteurella multocida osteomyelitis of the cervical spine in a patient on chronic haemodialysis.

Osteomyelitis due to Pasteurella multocida has been frequently documented but virtually all previous cases have resulted from direct inoculation of the organism or contiguous spread of local infection, following animal bites or scratches. Infections often occur in patients with serious underlying illnesses. Haematogenous osteomyelitis due to P multocida has very rarely been reported particularly in patients with chronic renal failure. We describe a patient on chronic haemodialysis who developed an acute febrile illness, two months following a monkey bite, caused by haematogenous cervical verte

Pulmonary lesions induced by a Pasteurella haemolytica cytotoxin preparation in calves.

Intrabronchial instillation of a Pasteurella haemolytica type A1 crude cytotoxin preparation in calves resulted in pulmonary gross and microscopic lesions comparable to spontaneous and experimental pasteurellosis. In the acute stage of the lesion electronmicroscopy revealed intravascular accumulation, degeneration and fragmentation of leukocytes in the interalveolar septa. Secondary thrombus formation and increased vascular permeability resulted in alveolar flooding, fibrin deposition, extravasation of erythrocytes and loss of alveolar epithelium. No cytotoxicity was observed for the tracheal

Immunoperoxidase evaluation of pneumonic lesions induced by Pasteurella multocida in calves.

To evaluate the relationship between pneumonic lesions and distribution of bacteria, lungs from calves inoculated with Pasteurella multocida were examined histologically by use of immunoperoxidase technique. Pneumonic lesions fundamentally consisted of broncho-pneumonia with fibrinopurulent pleuritis. The lesions were confirmed to be associated with inoculated P multocida, using the immunoperoxidase technique. The P multocida antigen was detected not only in the bacterial clusters in the lesions, but also in the cytoplasm of infiltrating neutrophils and macrophages. Further, immunoelectron mic

Histological changes in lungs of calves exposed to an aerosol of Pasteurella haemolytica.

An experiment was designed to study the interaction of Pasteurella haemolytica with an attenuated bovine herpesvirus 1 in calves. Low titre of the virus culture used for aerosol exposure failed to produce measurable interaction. However, the experiment provided the first opportunity to study the light-microscopic changes in lungs of calves (n = 3) to a low-dose exposure (5-min aerosol) of P. haemolytica A1 from a fresh 5-h log-phase culture. The histopathological study was confined to tissue exposed to only P. haemolytica. A limited macroscopic pneumonia was produced in ventral parts of crania

Severe pleuritis associated with certain strains of Pasteurella multocida in swine.

Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 2 farms on which grower or finisher pigs had problems of severe emaciation and high death loss (greater than 5%). At necropsy, the pigs had extensive suppurative pleuritis and pericarditis, with adhesions over the lung surface. On one farm, the pigs also had multiple lung abscesses. Histologic findings included polymorphonuclear cell infiltration in bronchial and alveolar spaces, thickening of alveolar walls, pleuritis, and in some cases, abscesses. From all pigs, P multocida was isolated. The strains (A52, A59) were serotype A and were nontoxigenic. Exp

Infection of duck plague carriers with Pasteurella multocida and P. anatipestifer.

Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos) and white pekin ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) were infected with duck plague virus and challenged with LD20's of Pasteurella multocida and P. anatipestifer. There was no difference between mortality rates of duck plague-infected ducks and controls, suggesting that these organisms do not act synergistically under the conditions of our experiments. There was a difference of about 500-fold between the LD20 of P. multocida for mallards and that for white pekin ducks, indicating that mallards are much more susceptible to avian cholera than white p

Pasteurella multocida infections. Report of 34 cases and review of the literature.

Pasteurella multocida, a small, gram-negative coccobacillus , is part of the normal oral flora of many animals, including the dog and cat. P. multocida is the etiologic agent in a variety of infectious disease syndromes. We have reported 34 cases of infection caused by P. multocida and have reviewed the English literature. P. multocida infections may be divided into three broad groups: 1. Infections resulting from animal bites and scratches : The most common infections caused by P. multocida are local wound infections following animal bites or scratches . Cats are the source of infection in 60

RecO: a potential target for overcoming fluoroquinolone resistance in Pasteurella multocida.

AIMS: Pasteurella multocida (Pm) is one of the main pathogens causing bovine respiratory disease in China. The prevention and control measures against Pm are traditionally based on the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Previous studies have found that Pm is prone to developing antibiotic resistance and tolerance-related mutations when exposed to low concentrations of antibiotics, ultimately leading to challenges in the prevention and control of Pm. This study aimed to explore the role of the recO gene in Pm in mediating resistance and tolerance to fluoroquinolones. METHODS AND RESULTS: Highl

Pasteurella multocida Infection of an Aortic Endograft: A Rare Zoonotic Complication.

Pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic, encapsulated, and gram-negative coccobacillus frequently implicated in soft tissue infections following animal bites, particularly dogs and cats. Invasive infections, including bacteremia and endovascular involvement, are rare and typically occur in immunocompromised or elderly individuals. Vascular graft infections due to P. multocida are rare, with limited cases reported in the literature. We report the case of an 87-year-old man with a history of abdominal aortic aneurysm repair who presented with acute confusion, weakness, and dyspnea. Initial workup re
