Social anxiety and social cognition: the influence of sex.

Current theoretical models predict a negative relationship between social anxiety and performance on measures of social cognition, yet there appears to be relatively little research that directly examines this relationship and the potential interaction of sex. Two samples of undergraduates self-reporting either a high (n=27; 59% female) or low (n=29; 62% female) level of social anxiety on the abbreviated Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory completed two social cognition measures: the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (Eyes Test) and The Awareness of Social Inference Test-Parts 2 and 3). A mult

The pharmacologic and expectancy effects of alcohol on social anxiety in individuals with social phobia.

Individuals with social phobia are at an increased risk for alcohol problems. Individuals with social phobia could increase their risk for pathological alcohol use if they drink as a means of coping with anxiety-provoking social situations. Providing a circumscribed test of this view, we evaluate the effect of alcohol on the intensity of social phobia anxiety responses. Sixty-one individuals with social phobia gave two speech challenges in front of a group ('social anxiety challenge'), one occurring before and one after they consumed either: (a) an alcoholic drink they were told contained alco

Threat of shock increases excitability and connectivity of the intraparietal sulcus.

Anxiety disorders affect approximately 1 in 5 (18%) Americans within a given 1 year period, placing a substantial burden on the national health care system. Therefore, there is a critical need to understand the neural mechanisms mediating anxiety symptoms. We used unbiased, multimodal, data-driven, whole-brain measures of neural activity (magnetoencephalography) and connectivity (fMRI) to identify the regions of the brain that contribute most prominently to sustained anxiety. We report that a single brain region, the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), shows both elevated neural activity and global br

Brain activation during anticipatory anxiety in social anxiety disorder.

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety during expectation of performance-related situations is an important feature of the psychopathology of social anxiety disorder (SAD). The neural basis of anticipatory anxiety in SAD has not been investigated in controlled studies. The current study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural correlates during the anticipation of public and evaluated speaking vs a control condition in 17 SAD patients and 17 healthy control subjects. FMRI results show increased activation of the insula and decreased activation of the ventral striat

Cognitive style, alprazolam plasma levels, and treatment response in panic disorder.

This study investigated an anxiety-prone cognitive style (measured by the Anxious Thoughts and Tendencies Questionnaire, AT&T) as a predictor of the acute response to increasing alprazolam plasma levels in panic disorder. Panic disorder patients (n=26) were treated with escalating doses of alprazolam for 4 weeks, then a fixed dose of 1 mg four times a day for 4 weeks. At 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 weeks, trough alprazolam plasma levels; clinical, self-report, and performance measures; and vital signs were assessed. Panic attack data were from daily diaries. The repeated response measures were ana

The role of grit and resilience in children with reading disorder: a longitudinal cohort study.

Prior studies have suggested that grit and resilience predict both academic and career success. However, these qualities have not been examined in children with reading disorder (RD). We therefore investigated whether grit and resilience were associated with anxiety, depression, academic performance, and quality of life (QOL) in these students. This 3-year longitudinal cohort study included 163 participants with RD from 3 schools. Evaluations were completed by parents and/or teachers every 3 months. The Grit and Resilience Scale was adapted from the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and

The effects of anticipating a high-stress task on sleep and performance during simulated on-call work.

On-call work is used to manage around the clock working requirements in a variety of industries. Often, tasks that must be performed while on-call are highly important, difficult and/or stressful by nature and, as such, may impact the level of anxiety that is experienced by on-call workers. Heightened anxiety is associated with poor sleep, which affects next-day cognitive performance. Twenty-four male participants (20-35 years old) spent an adaptation, a control and two counterbalanced on-call nights in a time-isolated sleep laboratory. On one of the on-call nights they were told that they wou

The effects of impression management demands on heart rate, self-reported social anxiety, and social competence in undergraduate males.

The effects of self-presentation demands were evaluated through conversational probe (CP) role-play tasks. Participants (N = 29) were required to manage their self-presentations (i.e., the impression they made, in each of two conditions). During high impression management (IM) demand, participants were evaluated on their performance. During Low IM demand, participants evaluated a confederate's performance. The High IM demand condition produced significantly higher heart rate (HR) and self-reported anxiety. HR and self-reported anxiety accounted for a significant amount of the variance in crite

Post-event processing in social anxiety: A scoping review.

Graded exposure successfully reduces fear in specific phobias and anxiety disorders, yet social exposure in daily life often fails to mitigate social anxiety. Post-event processing, perseverative, negative, self-referential thinking that occurs following a social-evaluative event, may partly explain inhibited desensitization to social fears. Post-event processing has been studied extensively since its first description by Clark and Wells (1995) and previously reviewed (e.g., Brozovich & Heimberg, 2008; Wong, 2016). However, these reviews are now dated or limited in scope. In the present scopin

Dorsal anterior cingulate cortex activity during cognitive challenge in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with aberrant emotional information processing while little is known about non-emotional cognitive processing biases. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) has been implicated in SAD neuropathology and is activated both by emotional and non-affective cognitive challenges like the Multisource Interference Task (MSIT). METHODS: Here, we used fMRI to compare dACC activity and test performance during MSIT in 69 SAD patients and 38 healthy controls. In addition to patient-control comparisons, we examined whether neural activity in the d

The relation between social anxiety and audience perception: examining Clark and Wells' (1995) model among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Clark and Wells' cognitive model of social anxiety proposes that socially anxious individuals have negative expectations of performance prior to a social event, focus their attention predominantly on themselves and on their negative self-evaluations during an event, and use this negative self-processing to infer that other people are judging them harshly. AIMS: The present study tested these propositions. METHOD: The study used a community sample of 161 adolescents aged 14-18 years. The participants gave a speech in front of a pre-recorded audience acting neutrally, and participa

Trait anxiety affects decision-making differently in healthy men and women: towards gender-specific endophenotypes of anxiety.

Excessive levels of trait anxiety are a risk factor for psychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorders and substance abuse. High trait anxiety has been associated with altered cognitive functioning, in particular with an attentional bias towards aversive stimuli. Decision-making is a crucial aspect of cognitive functioning that relies on the correct processing and control of emotional stimuli. Interestingly, anxiety and decision-making share underlying neural substrates, involving cortico-limbic pathways, including the amygdala, striatum and medial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices. In

The role of psychological factors and food in improving athletic performance: an analytical study of a specific sports organization's society.

BACKGROUND: Athletic performance reflects the interplay of physical, psychological, and nutritional factors. Although the individual roles of mental and dietary factors are increasingly recognized, their combined relationship with performance within a defined sports organization has rarely been examined. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study examined the associations of psychological factors (motivation, anxiety, mental resilience, self-confidence) and self-reported nutritional practices with self-perceived athletic performance among athletes affiliated with a sports organization in Rizhao, S
