[Diffusion- and perfusion-weighted MR imaging during the hyperacute phase of stroke].

The sensitivity of diffusion-weighted MR imaging to detect a lesion within 6 hours of stroke onset was approximately 90%. The false negative results were usually small lesions (1 ml), were seen early, and were usually located in the brain stem. The specificity of this technique was nearly 100% when it was used correctly. The volume and the value of the apparent diffusion coefficient of the detected lesions provided prognostic information. After injection of a contrast agent (perfusion imaging), a time series of volumes were obtained using a T2* sensitive gradient echo EPI sequence. Hemodynamic

Evaluation of carotid endarterectomy with sequential MR perfusion imaging: a preliminary report.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Current indications for carotid endarterectomy are determined by balancing the relative risks of surgery with the benefits of reduced risk of subsequent stroke. Our purpose was to use MR perfusion imaging to assess patients being considered for carotid endarterectomy and to monitor sequential changes in MR perfusion characteristics after surgery. In particular, we wished to determine whether this technique could be used to detect changes that might be related to post-carotid endarterectomy hyperemia. METHODS: We used a single-section gradient-recalled echo sequence to

Atraumatic quantitation of cerebral perfusion in cats by 19F magnetic resonance imaging.

We have noninvasively produced low-resolution, quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance images of cerebral blood flow in 2-ml voxels in eight cats. Typical signal-to-noise of 4 to 1 was obtained in cerebral voxels in 16.5-s epochs. Mean flow during normocapnia (paCO2 = 39 +/- 4 mm Hg) and hypercapnia (paCO2 = 62 +/- 4 mm Hg) was 53 +/- 20 ml/100 g-min and 140 +/- 36 ml/100 g-min, respectively. Fast flows in normocapnia were 94 +/- 13 and 182 +/- 39 ml/100 g-min in hypercapnia. These results suggest that an atraumatic quantitative imaging assessment of cerebral perfusion may be possible in human

Pancreatic grafts. Nuclear perfusion imaging to detect vascular complications and rejection crises.

Perfusion studies with 99m-Tc-DTPA were used routinely to investigate renal grafts. Efforts were made to employ this technique in monitoring the perfusion of pancreatic grafts. A total perfusion failure is as reliably detectable as in renal grafts. Smaller perfusion alterations could be demonstrated by follow up studies. It appears to be feasible to differentiate the salivary edema, well known from animal experiments, from a rejection reaction with the help of other parameters (e.g. creatinine). Further clinical studies, however, are necessary to confirm these results.

Perfusion imaging findings, and outcomes between computed tomography perfusion selected basilar artery occlusion and anterior circulation stroke patients undergoing endovascular treatment.

BACKGROUND: Basilar artery occlusion (BAO) is a severe form of ischemic stroke associated with high morbidity and mortality. Whether BAO patients derive similar benefits from CT perfusion (CTP)-guided endovascular treatment (EVT) as those with anterior circulation stroke (ACS) remains unclear. AIM: This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of EVT based on computed tomography (CT) perfusion between patients with BAO and those with ACS. METHODS: This analysis was conducted using data from a prospective multicenter Registry on International Stroke Perfusion Imaging. A total of 256 pat

Attenuation of adenosine-induced myocardial perfusion heterogeneity by atenolol and other cardioselective beta-adrenoceptor blockers: a crossover myocardial perfusion imaging study.

UNLABELLED: Little is known about the effect of chronic beta-blockade on adenosine actions. We sought to investigate the effect of oral beta-blockers on the presence, extent, and severity of myocardial perfusion abnormality induced by adenosine in patients with coronary artery disease. METHODS: In this crossover study, 45 male patients with coronary artery disease on beta-blocker therapy with atenolol, bisoprolol, or metoprolol underwent adenosine myocardial perfusion imaging both on and off beta-blockade in a random order on separate days. Myocardial perfusion was assessed both qualitatively

Arterial spin labeling imaging findings in transient ischemic attack patients: comparison with diffusion- and bolus perfusion-weighted imaging.

BACKGROUND: Since transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) can predict future stroke, it is important to distinguish true vascular events from non-vascular etiologies. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a non-contrast magnetic resonance (MR) method that is sensitive to cerebral perfusion and arterial arrival delays. Due to its high sensitivity to minor perfusion alterations, we hypothesized that ASL abnormalities would be identified frequently in TIA patients, and could therefore help increase clinicians' confidence in the diagnosis. METHODS: We acquired diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), intracranial M

Detecting Changes in Tissue Perfusion With Hyperspectral Imaging and Thermal Imaging Following Endovascular Treatment for Peripheral Arterial Disease.

PURPOSE: Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and thermal imaging allow contact-free tissue perfusion measurements and may help determine the effect of endovascular treatment (EVT) in patients with peripheral arterial disease. This study aimed to detect changes in perfusion with HSI and thermal imaging peri-procedurally and determine whether these changes can identify limbs that show clinical improvement after 6 weeks. METHODS: Patients with Rutherford class 2-6 scheduled for EVT were included prospectively. Hyperspectral imaging and thermal imaging were performed directly before and after EVT. Images

Tomographic myocardial perfusion imaging with technetium-99m teboroxime during adenosine-induced coronary hyperemia: correlation with thallium-201 imaging.

Single-photon emission computed tomographic imaging with technetium-99m teboroxime during exercise has been found to be feasible and the results correlate with those obtained with thallium-201. This study examined the feasibility of this technique and compared tomographic imaging with technetium-99m teboroxime during adenosine-induced coronary hyperemia with thallium-201 imaging. With the patient positioned on the imaging table, adenosine was infused at a rate of 140 micrograms/kg per min for 6 min. At 4 min, 20 to 25 mCi (740 to 925 MBq) of technetium-99m teboroxime was injected intravenously

Adenosine stress CMR perfusion imaging of the temporal evolution of perfusion defects in a porcine model of progressive obstructive coronary artery occlusion.

Adenosine stress CMR perfusion imaging can quantify absolute perfusion and myocardial perfusion reserve (MPR) in coronary artery disease (CAD) with higher spatial resolution than positron emission tomography, the only clinically available technique for quantitative myocardial perfusion imaging. While porcine models of CAD are excellent for studying perfusion abnormalities in chronic CAD, to date there are a limited number of studies that use quantitative perfusion for evaluation. Therefore, we developed an adenosine stress CMR protocol to evaluate the temporal evolution of perfusion defects in

Comparing changes in severe versus mild perfusion defect size in patients who underwent serial rubidium-82 positron emission tomography myocardial perfusion imaging.

Serial myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is valuable for assessing coronary disease progression and treatment efficacy. Previous serial MPI studies emphasized severe perfusion defects, with no attention given to milder perfusion defects. Thus, this study sought to compare and identify predictors of change in severe versus mild perfusion defect size in patients who underwent serial positron emission tomography (PET) MPI. Serial PET MPI was performed in 551 patients with an average of 1.9 years between scans. Severe and mild perfusion defect size at both PETs were derived from automated softwar

Fragmented QRS on surface electrocardiogram as a predictor of perfusion defect in patients with suspected coronary artery disease undergoing myocardial perfusion imaging.

BACKGROUND: Fragmented QRS (FQRS) on surface electrocardiogram (ECG) is associated with the presence of myocardial scar tissue and may have prognostic value after certain ischemic events. We aimed to examine the anatomical correlation of FQRS with the presence of perfusion abnormalities in patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: Patients without a known history of CAD, who were referred for myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) between January 2016 and May 2016, were enrolled. The presence of FQRS on surface ECG was evaluated. The presence of FQRS, number of leads with FQ

The Effect of Monitored Walking on Extracardiac Intestinal Activity in Myocardial Perfusion Imaging.

Various techniques have been used in attempts to reduce interfering gastrointestinal activity in myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI); however, these approaches have yielded inconsistent results. The goal of this study was to investigate the efficacy of monitored walking, a previously unexplored technique, in reducing subdiaphragmatic activity-related artifacts during pharmacologic stress 99mTc-tetrofosmin MPI with SPECT to improve the overall image quality. Methods: The study included patients who underwent MPI with pharmacologic stress. They were given a step counter immediately after the radi

Infrared Thermography Imaging for Assessment of Peripheral Perfusion in Patients with Septic Shock.

Skin temperature changes can be used to assess peripheral perfusion in circulatory shock patients. However, research has been limited to point measurements from acral parts of the body. Infrared thermography allows non-invasive evaluation of temperature distribution over a larger surface. Our study aimed to map thermographic patterns in the knee and upper thigh of 81 septic shock patients within 24 h of admission and determine the relationship between skin temperature patterns, mottling, and 28-day mortality. We extracted skin temperature measurements from zones corresponding to mottling score

Perfusion Imaging of Fatigue and Time-on-Task Effects in Patients With Parkinson's Disease.

Fatigue is a highly prevalent and debilitating non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), yet its' neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here we combined arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with a sustained mental workload paradigm to examine the neural correlates of fatigue and time-on-task effects in PD patients. Twenty-one PD patients were scanned at rest and during continuous performance of a 20-min psychomotor vigilance test (PVT). Time-on-task effects were measured by the reaction time changes during the PVT and by self-reported f

Hyperspectral imaging for early detection of oxygenation and perfusion changes in irradiated skin.

Studies examining acute oxygenation and perfusion changes in irradiated skin are limited. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), a method of wide-field, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, provides noninvasive, quantified measurements of cutaneous oxygenation and perfusion. This study examines whether HSI can assess acute changes in oxygenation and perfusion following irradiation. Skin on both flanks of nude mice (n=20) was exposed to 50 Gy of beta radiation from a strontium-90 source. Hyperspectral images were obtained before irradiation and on selected days for three weeks. Skin reaction assessment was
