Tuberculous pericarditis (TBP) is an uncommon but serious form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis that remains diagnostically challenging due to its nonspecific clinical features and the limited sensitivity of conventional methods such as smear microscopy, culture, and histopathology. We describe an 80-year-old man presenting with recurrent fever and weakness, found to have a large pericardial effusion with tamponade physiology requiring emergent pericardial window drainage. Pericardial fluid analysis demonstrated an exudative, lymphocyte-predominant effusion with elevated lactate dehydrogenase an

Introduction Severe postintubation tracheal stenosis (PITS) is a rare iatrogenic complication after endotracheal intubation.Case presentation A case of PITS in a 51-year-old male undergoing partial pericardiectomy with a principal diagnosis of tuberculous constrictive pericarditis. Within 6 hours of extubation, a second emergency intubation lasting 120 hours was performed. The patient reported exertional dyspnea 30 days after discharge. High-resolution tracheobronchial tree computed tomography with three-dimensional reconstruction revealed constriction of the tracheal lumen of more than 80% at

Twenty-six patients with constrictive pericarditis have been investigated and treated—by surgical in addition to medical methods in 22, and by medical management alone in four. A tuberculous aetiology was proved in only two patients but was probable in 10 others. One patient developed constriction of the heart following a stab wound, which caused a haemopericardium, and one after organization of a pericardial cyst. In the remainder no cause was found. The clinical features and diagnostic criteria are described, with emphasis on cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography. Operative results a

Diagnosing and monitoring of constrictive pericarditis (CP) is challenging. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) offers superior visualization of pericardial thickness, inflammation, and fibrosis, helping assess disease progression and treatment response. This case series explores the role of CMR in monitoring CP, tracking disease progression, assessing treatment response, and guiding clinical decisions. This case series included six patients with CP who underwent serial CMR imaging. Clinical data and CMR findings—such as pericardial thickness, late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), T2 STIR si

BACKGROUND: Pericardial effusion (PE) indicates the build-up of fluid within the pericardial sac, which encases the heart. The present study was undertaken to assess the clinical profile, etiology of pericardial effusion and to determine the correlation of cardiac tamponade and constrictive pericarditis with etiology.
METHODS: A prospective observational hospital based longitudinal study was undertaken among the 88 newly diagnosed and known patients of pericardial effusion who are above 18 years. The clinical profile of pericardial effusion including history, examination, standard lab paramet

Thirty-six consecutive patients with cancer who met the classical criteria for fever of unexplained origin (FUO) were identified. A total of 18 patients had infections including all 12 with leukemia, four of 12 with Hodgkin's disease, and two with solid tumors. Fungal infections were found in nine: histoplasmosis, three; candidiasis, three; and aspergillosis, systemic sporotrichosis, or cryptococcal meningitis, one each. Six patients had unresolved pyogenic infections and one had tuberculous pericarditis. Two others had viral etiologies. Granulocytopenia was significantly more common in the FU

We describe 2 cases of IgG4-related disease with pleural effusion in elderly men. Both patients had elevated serum IgG4 levels, and the characteristics of their pleural effusion were similar. Patient 1 had pericardial effusion and retroperitoneal fibrosis, and a biopsy specimen from the pericardium showed infiltration of abundant IgG4-positive plasma cells with fibrosis. Because his pleurisy, pericarditis and retroperitoneal fibrosis responded to steroid therapy, we diagnosed pleurisy associated with IgG4-related disease. Patient 2 had been treated with steroids because of IgG4-related sialade

In the actual context of an increased TB endemia (notification rate of 90.5 per thousand, meaning 21457 cases in 2010, but with a constant decreasing trend in the last 8 years), we wanted to see what is the share and structure of extra-respiratory tuberculosis in the period 2007-2010. In the interval 2007-2010 have been registered annually between 1252-1267 extra-respiratory TB cases. Extra-respiratory TB have been between 30% and 42,1% from all TB cases registered annually with the extra-pulmonary TB. In the descending order of cases recorded with TB extra respiratory in 2010, the first was e

We reviewed the records of 45 patients (mean age, 46.6 ± 14.9 yr; range, 21-84 yr) with a diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis who had undergone pericardiectomy from 1994 through 2006. Preoperatively, 2 of the patients (4.4%) were in New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class I, 20 (44.4%) in class II, 22 (48.9%) in class III, and 1 (2.2%) in class IV. Pericardial calcification was detected in 20% of plain chest radiographs. Constrictive pericarditis was caused by tuberculosis in 22.2%, chronic renal failure in 8.9%, a history of sternotomy in 4.4%, and malignancy in 4.4%. The cause

A group of sixteen children suffering from osteoarticular tuberculosis were seen over the past five years in the Belgrade Paediatric Surgery Clinic. This disease is now extremely rare and effects chiefly children born outside maternity departments and not receiving BCG vaccination at birth for different reasons. The osteoarticular tuberculosis rate in the Socialist Republic of Serbia over this period was thus one in 500,000 children. The disease is three times as common in male children, most often affecting the hip and presenting above all at about the age of nine. At the time of admission, e

Pericardial effusion complicated by cardiac tamponade is a medical emergency. Large pericardial effusion and tamponade are rare in childhood. Tuberculosis remains a major cause of pericardial effusion in endemic areas. A 16-year-old adolescent with no significant past history was admitted to the medical unit of the Buea Regional hospital in the South West region of Cameroon for heart failure after presenting with abdominal distension, shortness of breath and fever of two weeks duration. Echocardiographic study during admission revealed a large pericardial effusion (27mm in thickness) with echo

In this report we describe the case of a 22-year-old female who presented to our hospital with a 2 week history of chest tightness and easy fatigability. Examination and chest ultrasound revealed a massive pericardial effusion with evidence of tamponade. A rapid test for HIV was positive. Diagnostic and therapeutic pericardiocentesis was performed with good clinical response and revealed serosanguinous, exudative fluid. According to national guidelines, the patient was empirically treated for tuberculous pericarditis. Recurrence of the pericardial effusion occurred after 2 weeks and the cardio

The repertoire of CD4+ T-lymphocytes was investigated in six patients affected by tuberculosis, who had a negative PPD skin test at diagnosis. Polyclonal CD4+ T-cell lines from the peripheral blood failed to proliferate to PPD and to the 16- or 38-kDa proteins of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, while CD4+ T-cell lines from the site of disease responded to PPD, and to the 16- and 38-kDa proteins, and derived epitopes in vitro. The repertoire of CD4+ T-cells accumulating at the site of disease was found to be widely heterogeneous as demonstrated by the finding that at least seven different peptides

Constrictive pericarditis is a rare and severe disease. Timely and correct differential diagnosis of this pathology facilitates choice of necessary tactics of treatment and thus improve prognosis and quality of life. In this paper we present clinical case report of a patient with constrictive pericarditis. The disease was diagnosed on the basis of clinical picture, data of X-ray and echocardiographic investigation, and confirmed by multispiral computed tomography (MSCT). The patient was subjected to pericardioectomy with positive clinical effect and results of repeated echocardiography and MSC

BACKGROUND: It is becoming increasingly clear that, during successful highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), a proportion of treated patients develop opportunistic infections (OIs), referred to in this setting as immune restoration disease (IRD). We examined the risk of developing IRD in HAART-treated HIV-infected patients.
METHODS: A retrospective study of a cohort including all 389 patients treated with HAART between 1 January 1998 and 31 May 2004 in our HIV unit was performed to evaluate the occurrence of and risk factors for IRD during HAART. Baseline and follow-up values of CD4 T-

Pulmonary tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis when droplet nuclei laden with bacilli are inhaled. In accordance with the virulence of the organism and the defenses of the host, tuberculosis can occur in the lungs and in extrapulmonary organs. A variety of sequelae and complications can occur in the pulmonary and extrapulmonary portions of the thorax in treated or untreated patients. These can be categorized as follows: (a) parenchymal lesions, which include tuberculoma, thin-walled cavity, cicatrization, end-stage lung destruction, aspergilloma, and bronchogenic carcinoma; (b)

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous pericardial effusion (TPE) presents significant diagnostic challenges due to its nonspecific clinical presentation and similarities with other types of pericardial effusion. The available data on the use of artificial intelligence for predicting TPE is minimal and needs further expansion. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of various machine learning algorithms (MLAs) in identifying TPE among patients with pericardial effusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted at Cho Ray Hospital in Vietnam from 2010 to 2020. Eight MLAs-lo
