We present a case of spinal and iliac fossa infection caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum in a 52-year-old male patient with unexplained back pain. Notably, the patient had no history of periodontal infections.Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed abscesses at the L3-4 vertebrae and hip, with dura mater and cauda equina compression.Next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the aspirate confirmed the presence of Fusobacterium nucleatum. The patient was treated with antibiotics (carbapenems, and metronidazole) and underwent surgical procedures for abscess drainage and internal fixation, resulting in

A 22-year-old female patient consulted the Odontology Department of the Mohammed V Military Hospital in Rabat, Morocco, for a recurrent abscess in relation to the left maxillary central incisor (#21). The dental history of the tooth began with necrosis following trauma a few years before. A conventional endodontic root canal treatment was performed, but several infectious episodes occurred, treated only with antibiotics. The radiographic examination showed an adequate root filling and a large apical lesion in Tooth #21. Tooth #21 was diagnosed as chronic apical periodontitis. After orthograde

In general dental conditions such as dental caries and periodontal disease, a combination of adverse conditions can cause potentially life-threatening periodontal abscess. We treated a patient in whom an oral infection developed into septic shock, resulting in patient death. A 78-year-old woman experienced spontaneous pain around a moving tooth. Pus discharge was observed, the area was sterilized, and an analgesic was prescribed. A few days later, the swelling spread to the buccal region leading to difficulty while eating. Upon systemic status and blood examination at our dental hospital, depr

BACKGROUND: Deep periodontal defects (probing depths: 10-15 mm) are traditionally considered hopeless and are frequently recommended for extraction. This report describes two patients demonstrating substantial periodontal tissue healing using a minimally invasive, nonsurgical approach combining piezoelectric instrumentation with Nd:YAG laser therapy, without bone grafts or biologic adjuncts.
METHODS: Two systemically healthy, nonsmoking adults with periodontally hopeless teeth underwent subgingival scaling with chlorhexidine irrigation, followed by Nd:YAG laser therapy. Case 1 received delaye

The Treponema denticola FhbB protein contributes to immune evasion by binding factor H (FH). Cleavage of FH by the T. denticola protease, dentilisin, may contribute to the local immune dysregulation that is characteristic of periodontal disease (PD). Although three FhbB phyletic types have been defined (FhbB1, FhbB2, and FhbB3), the in vivo expression patterns and antigenic heterogeneity of FhbB have not been assessed. Here, we demonstrate that FhbB is a dominant early antigen that elicits FhbB type-specific antibody (Ab) responses. Using the murine skin abscess model, we demonstrate that the

Three cases, one each of native valve, prosthetic valve and composite graft endocarditis caused by Rothia dentocariosa are described. The first patient presented with multiple brain abscesses and severe congestive heart failure due to destructive endocarditis with large vegetations on the mitral valve. He died shortly after emergency valve replacement. Gram-positive coccoid rods were identified in the vegetations of the excised mitral valve. The second patient had a R. dentocariosa endocarditis of a prosthetic aortic valve that was treated empirically with netilmicin and teicoplanin, due to an

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease impacting the supporting structures of teeth, with significant global pervasiveness and systemic health implications. Current treatments, such as scaling and root planning (SRP) and adjunctive antibiotics, face challenges including antibiotic resistance, infection recurrence, and incomplete tissue regeneration. Bestatin, a dipeptide aminopeptidase inhibitor, has shown potential as a novel therapeutic agent due to its targeted antimicrobial effects against Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), biofilm modulation, and anti-inflammatory properti

BACKGROUND: Inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of diabetes. A reciprocal relationship exists between diabetes and chronic periodontitis. This report describes the effects of an acute focal dental inflammation and subsequent endodontic treatment on the required insulin dosage of a 70-year-old man who had moderately controlled diabetes.
METHODS: Following an exacerbation of a combined endodontic-periodontic (endo-perio) lesion of tooth #3, the patient noticed a sudden increase in his insulin demand. After 3 weeks, the required dosage was approximately 100% greater. In association with

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recent evidence from molecular genetic studies has revealed that oral Treponema species are involved in infections of endodontic origin. This study assessed the occurrence of two newly named oral treponemes - Treponema parvum and Treponema putidum - in primary endodontic infections using a culture-independent identification technique.
METHODS: Genomic DNA was isolated directly from clinical samples, and a 16S rRNA gene-based nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was used to determine the presence of T. parvum and T. putidum. Species-specific primer pairs were developed

The incidence of dental disease among people in developing countries today raises questions about the variation in the oral health of prehistoric populations. Considering these questions, we offer observations describing several types of dental disease which occurred among certain prehistoric populations of Hungary. The dental remains of 162 individuals recovered from seven sites of the Neolithic, Copper, and Bronze Age periods were examined for evidence of caries, hypoplasia, and periodontal disease. Appropriate methods were used to describe and record these dental lesions. The incidence of d

Citric acid conditioning of dentine has been proposed as an efficacious treatment for promoting re-attachment after periodontal surgery. This study investigated the pulpal reactions to periodontal surgery combined with citric acid (pH 1) demineralization of exposed dentine for 3 min. 9 cats were used as the experimental animals, with each cat providing 1 negative and 1 positive control and 2 experimental canine teeth. Evaluation was over 3 observation periods, with 3 cats in each period being sacrificed at 4, 21 and 83 days. Positive control teeth, which underwent periodontal surgery combining

Dialister pneumosintes and Slackia exigua are both obligatory anaerobe and known to be associated with periodontal diseases and other oral infection. We report a case of blood stream infection caused by D. pneumosintes and S. exigua. This occurred in a 78-year-old female patient that presented with general weakness and fever. We revealed that she had a periapical abscess. The blood culture was positive for D. pneumosintes and S. exigua; however, identifying them was challenging. Ultimately, 16S rRNA sequencing was used to identify the organisms. The patient recovered after being treated with c

This case report describes the procedure and outcome of regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) in a tooth with incomplete root apex and posttreatment apical periodontitis. A 44-year-old patient was referred to the endodontist because of a periapical lesion on tooth #21 and a recent episode of acute periapical abscess. On clinical and radiographic examination, this tooth presented with tenderness to percussion and palpation, periapical radiolucent lesion, external apical resorption, and incomplete apex formation. After coronal access, the filling material was removed, and the canal was gently

OBJECTIVE: This study intended to examine samples from primary endodontic infections for the presence of Catonella morbi and Granulicatella adiacens, 2 species that have been recently suggested to be involved with infections in other oral sites.
STUDY DESIGN: Genomic DNA was isolated directly from samples taken from teeth with different forms of apical periodontitis, and a devised culture-independent 16S rRNA gene-based heminested PCR assay was used to determine the prevalence of these 2 target species. Species-specific primers were developed by aligning closely related 16S rRNA gene sequence

Bone loss in the oral cavity may occur due to many causes, including infection, systemic or local alterations in the host response, or multifactorial causes. The purpose of this article is to review our present understanding of the major causes of oral bone loss in adults, with special emphasis on two major oral diseases: periodontitis and residual ridge resorption. Periodontitis is characterized by resorption of the alveolar bone as well as loss of the soft tissue attachment to the tooth. Progressive periodontitis will result in continued alveolar bone loss and may result in tooth mobility, a
