Barriers and facilitators to condom use among People Who Inject Drugs in Georgia: A qualitative study guided by the COM-B model.

People who inject drugs (PWID) are at a heightened risk of contracting and transmitting HIV due to shared needles and unsafe sexual practices. Evidence on what shapes condom use among PWID in Georgia is limited. We conducted qualitative study among PWID recruited from two harm-reduction organizations in Tbilisi and Samegrelo between June-August 2025. Interviews were guided by the COM-B framework and analyzed thematically. Reduced sexual pleasure emerged as a dominant capability-related barrier to condom use. Knowledge of risks, benefits, and where to obtain condoms supported condom use, althou

Online patient education and risk assessment: project OPERA from Cancerbackup. Putting inherited breast cancer risk information into context using argumentation theory.

OBJECTIVE: Many people are concerned about their family history of breast cancer, and are anxious about the possibility of developing breast cancer themselves. The majority of these people are likely not to be at significantly increased risk of developing inherited breast cancer. All women are at risk of developing sporadic breast cancer, and this risk increases with age. This project aims to aid people's understanding of these issues using an interactive online computer programme. METHODS: The UK National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence has published guidance for the National Hea

Effect of a national 4C antibiotic stewardship intervention on the clinical and molecular epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infections in a region of Scotland: a non-linear time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Whereas many antibiotics increase risk of Clostridium difficile infection through dysbiosis, epidemic C difficile ribotypes characterised by multidrug resistance might depend on antibiotic selection pressures arising from population use of specific drugs. We examined the effect of a national antibiotic stewardship intervention limiting the use of 4C antibiotics (fluoroquinolones, clindamycin, co-amoxiclav, and cephalosporins) and other infection prevention and control strategies on the clinical and molecular epidemiology of C difficile infections in northeast Scotland. METHODS: We

[Changes in vitamin A intake following the social marketing of red palm oil among children and women in Burkina Faso].

This paper focuses on changes in vitamin A (VA) intakes as part of the evaluation of a pilot project on social marketing of red palm oil (RPO) as a VA supplement for mothers and children in central-north Burkina Faso. The objectives of the 30-month project are to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of introducing RPO in non-consuming areas. RPO is collected from women in the South-West region and it is sold in project sites by village volunteers. RPO is promoted by community workers trained in persuasive communication and social marketing. The target population is free to buy and con

Social Role-Based Training Using a Computer Graphics Avatar in a Real-World Commercial Setting for Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The lack of social role-based behaviors, such as guiding and assisting others, is a barrier to employment success and community participation for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Enhancing self-efficacy is essential for improving these behaviors. To enhance self-efficacy in social role-based behaviors, we developed a training system that enables users to perform social role-based behaviors, including guiding and assisting others, called TCR (a training system that enables users to perform role-based behaviors using a computer graphics avatar in a real, bustling comm

Barriers and facilitators to resistance and aerobic exercise among older adults with sarcopenic obesity: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenic obesity (SO), characterized by the coexistence of excess adiposity and diminished muscle mass and function, represents an increasing health concern among the older adults. Resistance and aerobic exercises are effective strategies for managing this condition. However, due to low exercise adherence among older adults, the current state of prevention and control of SO remains challenging. Moreover, qualitative insights into the specific exercise experiences of this population, particularly in the Chinese context, are lacking. This study seeks to elucidate the barriers and f

Integrating the behavior change wheel and co-design approach in selecting strategies for improving cervical cancer screening literacy among rural women living with HIV in Eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) require more frequent cervical cancer screening than HIV negative women. However, uptake of cervical cancer screening services integrated into HIV care at most rural public health facilities in Eastern Uganda is low, below 50%. This is attributed to low cervical cancer screening literacy among rural WLHIV: limited ability to access, understand, and apply cervical cancer screening information. There is a need for evidence-based, context-specific, theory-informed strategies that target multi-level barriers and facilitators of cervical cancer literacy amo

Strategies to promote treatment compliance: a grounded theory study with relatives of people with a serious mental health condition.

BACKGROUND: Treatment pressures encompass communicative strategies that influence mental healthcare service users' decision-making to increase their compliance with recommended treatment. Persuasion, interpersonal leverage, inducements, and threats have been described as examples of treatment pressures. Research indicates that treatment pressures are exerted not only by mental healthcare professionals but also by relatives. While relatives play a crucial role in their family member's pathway to care, research on the use of treatment pressures by relatives is still scarce. Likewise, little is k

A new 'advanced' test of theory of mind: evidence from children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to assess the ability of children and adolescents with Asperger syndrome (AS) (N = 21) to infer physical versus mental states on a new 'advanced' test of theory-of-mind - Stories from Everyday Life. The participants in the AS group were of normal intelligence and were compared with an age-matched control group (N = 20) of normally developing children and adolescents. METHOD: The test materials comprised 26 short stories or 13 pairs of different types of stories. This contextually complex theory-of-mind battery aimed to record the participants' abil

Correlates of HIV infection among transgender women in two Chinese cities.

BACKGROUND: In an era when HIV transmission has been on the rise among men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender women may play a considerable role in China's current HIV epidemic as a potential "bridge" of HIV transmission between homosexual and heterosexual populations. We sought to understand the risk behaviours and factors associated with HIV infection among transgender women in two cities in China. METHODS: From January to December 2016, we recruited transgender women with the help of community-based organizations (CBOs) through a wide range of methods, including snowball sampling. Af

Comparison of HIV-related vulnerabilities between former child soldiers and children never abducted by the LRA in northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Thousands of former child soldiers who were abducted during the prolonged conflict in northern Uganda have returned to their home communities. Programmes that facilitate their successful reintegration continue to face a number of challenges. Although there is increasing knowledge of the dynamics of HIV infection during conflict, far less is known about its prevalence and implications for population health in the post-conflict period. This study investigated the effects of abduction on the prevalence of HIV and HIV-risk behaviours among young people in Gulu District, northern Uganda

Barriers to and enablers of prophylactic compression use by people at risk of venous leg ulcer recurrence: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are complex, chronic wounds that often recur after healing. The ongoing use of compression hosiery is the primary strategy to reduce the risk of VLU recurrence. However, adherence to this prophylactic treatment is low, undermining treatment effectiveness and placing a substantial burden on individuals with a history of VLUs and on healthcare systems. Understanding the factors influencing people's adherence to compression hosiery for secondary VLU prevention is essential to support approaches to promote uptake. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to (1) draw on the

Uncanny scripts: understanding pharmaceutical emplotment in the aboriginal context.

This article outlines a new social reality of global psycho-pharmaceutical prescribing: the pharmaceutical family, or ;phamily.' Ethnographic case studies from Manitoba, Canada (2002 to 2004) show how pharmaceutical emplotment, involving a synergy between cultural and drug scripts, can have uncanny consequences for vulnerable groups, such as Aboriginal children. Observations and interview transcripts of high prescribing doctors are analyzed to understand the prescribing logic of using psychoactive medication, such as methylphenidate, in young Aboriginal children diagnosed with FASD and/or ADHD

Collaborative Gameplay for Children's Self-Efficacy in Computational Thinking: Qualitative Cross-Sectional Design Science Research Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields driving socioeconomic development and career prospects, they continue to struggle with low enrollment and high dropout rates. An important predictor of academic performance and career persistence is self-efficacy, which is the belief in one's ability to succeed. Research indicates that collaboration improves learning outcomes and is associated with improved STEM motivation. Computational thinking (CT) is also increasingly valued in STEM education due to its reliance on computational tools and problem-solving pr

Mobile Health-Based Motivational Interviewing to Promote SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination in Rural Adults: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite documented effectiveness, the public health impact of vaccinations is severely limited by misperceptions, hesitancy, and poor acceptance. Messaging from health care providers has not yet been optimized to overcome these barriers and has not been tailored to groups that face health disparities, such as rural Americans. Because vaccines have become controversial, as illustrated by the public response to the SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, traditional approaches that use persuasive education or advice to change perspectives are unlikely to have long-term effects and may even be counterpr

The Influence of Social Media Messaging on Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Attitudes and Confidence Among Adolescent Males: Group Discussion Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine being available to males for the past 12 years, adolescent males continue to lag in HPV vaccine uptake due to a variety of factors. With the ubiquitous nature of social media use among this population, further research is needed to improve HPV vaccine confidence among young adolescent males using these platforms. OBJECTIVE: Using the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM), this study sought to better understand knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about HPV and HPV vaccination among male adolescents aged 14-17 years and examine how social me
