Uncertainty analysis of MR-PET image registration for precision neuro-PET imaging.

Accurate regional brain quantitative PET measurements, particularly when using partial volume correction, rely on robust image registration between PET and MR images. We argue here that the precision, and hence the uncertainty, of MR-PET image registration is mainly driven by the registration implementation and the quality of PET images due to their lower resolution and higher noise compared to the structural MR images. We propose a dedicated uncertainty analysis for quantifying the precision of MR-PET registration, centred around the bootstrap resampling of PET list-mode events to generate mu

PET Imaging in Cardiac Sarcoidosis: A Narrative Review with Focus on Novel PET Tracers.

Sarcoidosis is a multi-system inflammatory disease characterized by the development of inflammation and noncaseating granulomas that can involve nearly every organ system, with a predilection for the pulmonary system. Cardiac involvement of sarcoidosis (CS) occurs in up to 70% of cases, and accounts for a significant share of sarcoid-related mortality. The clinical presentation of CS can range from absence of symptoms to conduction abnormalities, heart failure, arrhythmias, valvular disease, and sudden cardiac death. Given the significant morbidity and mortality associated with CS, timely diag

Quantitative assessment of human and pet exposure to Salmonella associated with dry pet foods.

Recent Salmonella outbreaks associated with dry pet foods and treats highlight the importance of these foods as previously overlooked exposure vehicles for both pets and humans. In the last decade efforts have been made to raise the safety of this class of products, for instance by upgrading production equipment, cleaning protocols, and finished product testing. However, no comprehensive or quantitative risk profile is available for pet foods, thus limiting the ability to establish safety standards and assess the effectiveness of current and proposed Salmonella control measures. This study sou

FDG PET for rheumatoid arthritis: basic considerations and whole-body PET/CT.

[(18) F]Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is a tracer for glucose metabolism. Its distribution is not specific to cancer cells but is also observed in inflammatory tissue, including macrophages, capillaries, and fibroblasts. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic, chronic inflammation of the joints resulting in synovitis. The disease is characterized by fibrovascular proliferation leading to the formation of a pannus and causing high FDG uptake. Several clinical studies of RA have demonstrated that FDG uptake in affected joints reflects the disease activity of RA, with strong correlations between upta

Imaging uterine cervical cancer with FDG-PET/CT: direct comparison with PET.

PURPOSE: To compare 2-deoxy-2-[F-18]fluoro-D-glucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) and PET/computed tomography (CT) for certainty of image interpretation and for diagnostic accuracy in patients with primary and metastatic uterine cervical cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Images of 13 patients with cervical cancer having PET/CT examinations were reviewed retrospectively. PET and PET/CT images of all cases were read blindly and randomly by two readers. Foci of increased FDG uptake on PET or PET/CT were classified using a scoring system regarding lesion localization and characterization.

PET Imaging of Leg Arteries for Determining the Input Function in PET/MRI Brain Studies Using a Compact, MRI-compatible PET System.

In this study, we used a compact, high-resolution, and MRI-compatible PET camera (VersaPET) to assess the feasibility of measuring the image-derived input function (IDIF) from arteries in the leg with the ultimate goal of enabling fully quantitative PET brain imaging without blood sampling. We used this approach in five 18F-FDG PET/MRI brain studies in which the input function was also acquired using the gold standard of serial arterial blood sampling. After accounting for partial volume, dispersion, and calibration effects, we compared the metabolic rates of glucose (MRglu) quantified from Ve

Diagnostic accuracy of 13N-ammonia PET, 11C-methionine PET and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET: a comparative study in patients with suspected cerebral glioma.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of patients with glioma depended on the nature of the lesion and on histological grade of the tumor. Positron emission tomography (PET) using 13N-ammonia (NH3), 11C-methionine (MET) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) have been used to assess brain tumors. Our aim was to compare their diagnostic accuracies in patients with suspected cerebral glioma. METHODS: Ninety patients with suspicion of glioma based on previous CT/MRI, who underwent NH3 PET, MET PET and FDG PET, were prospectively enrolled in the study. The reference standard was established by histology or clinica

Torsional Malalignment Syndrome: The Hidden Role of Medial Tibial Slope in Knee Varus and the Potential of PETS Treatment for Correction.

BACKGROUND: In torsional malalignment syndrome (TMS), knee varus is observed when feet are neutral but disappears with external foot rotation. The underlying cause of this phenomenon-whether it results from visual alterations from limb rotation or reflects an additional structural abnormality in the lower extremity-along with the potential for simpler treatment options beyond rotational osteotomy, has not been previously investigated. METHODS: Eighteen subjects with TMS and ten control subjects had weight-bearing orthoroentgenograms and non-weight-bearing 3D CT scans of the lower limb. Mechan

Genomic features of mecA-positive methicillin-resistant Mammaliicoccus sciuri causing fatal infections in pets admitted to a veterinary intensive care unit.

Methicillin-resistant staphylococci have become leading cause of infectious diseases in humans and animals, being categorized as high priority pathogens by the World Health Organization. Although methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus sciuri (recently moved to Mammaliicoccus sciuri) has been widely reported in companion animals, there is scarce information regarding their clinical impact and genomic features. Herein, we reported the occurrence and genomic characteristics of methicillin-resistant M. sciuri recovered from fatal infections in pets admitted to an intensive care unit of a veterinary

Risk factors for antimicrobial resistance among Staphylococcus isolated from pets living with a patient diagnosed with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection.

It has been suggested that pets play a critical role in the maintenance of methicillin-resistant (MR) and multidrug-resistant (MDR) Staphylococcus spp. in the household. We examined risk factors for carriage of antimicrobial-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci, with particular attention to Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius isolated from pets living in households of people diagnosed with methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) skin or soft-tissue infection. We analyzed data collected cross-sectionally from a study conducted in 2012 that evaluated the transmission o

18F-FDG-PET/CT for polymyalgia rheumatica: agreement and diagnostic accuracy of routine PET scan report vs. standardized PMR PET scores.

BACKGROUND: 18F-FDG-PET/CT may reveal widespread inflammation of musculoskeletal structures in polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). Currently, scans are subjectively analysed based on the overall gestalt of the scan. Standardized PET scores may potentially aid the interpretation of the scans for suspected PMR. Here, we compared the agreement and diagnostic accuracy of routine PET scan reports vs. the most validated PET scores for PMR. METHODS: 68 consecutive patients with suspected PMR (treatment-naïve, n = 29; already treated, n = 39) undergoing 18F-FDG-PET/CT were included. In glucocorticoid-treat
