How is ozone pollution reducing our food supply?

Ground-level ozone pollution is already decreasing global crop yields (from ∼2.2-5.5% for maize to 3.9-15% and 8.5-14% for wheat and soybean, respectively), to differing extents depending on genotype and environmental conditions, and this problem is predicted to escalate given climate change and increasing ozone precursor emissions in many areas. Here a summary is provided of how ozone pollution affects yield in a variety of crops, thus impacting global food security. Ozone causes visible injury symptoms to foliage; it induces early senescence and abscission of leaves; it can reduce stomatal a

Methyl esterase 1 (StMES1) is required for systemic acquired resistance in potato.

Whether salicylic acid (SA) plays a role in systemic acquired resistance (SAR) signaling in potato is currently unclear because potato, unlike tobacco and Arabidopsis, contains highly elevated levels of endogenous SA. Recent studies have indicated that the SA derivative methyl salicylate (MeSA) serves as a long-distance phloem-mobile SAR signal in tobacco and Arabidopsis. Once in the distal, uninfected tissue of these plant species, MeSA must be converted into biologically active SA by the esterase activity of SA-binding protein 2 (SABP2) in tobacco or members of the AtMES family in Arabidopsi

Cytohistological and phytochemical study of madder root extracts obtained by ultrasonic and classical extractions.

INTRODUCTION: Madder (Rubia tinctorum) has been used since ancient times as a source of pigments for dyeing and painting. Madder dyes are localised in roots and the native chemical population is composed of glycosiled and aglycone compounds. The aim of this study is to elaborate an efficient extraction process without any chemical denaturation of dyes. OBJECTIVE: To compare an optimised ultrasonic process, using for madder dye extraction, with two conventional procedures and to determine the efficiency of ultrasound on these vegetable matrix. METHODOLOGY: Madder roots were extract in a metha

Lotus japonicus gene Ljsbp is highly conserved among plants and animals and encodes a homologue to the mammalian selenium-binding proteins.

We have isolated and characterized a Lotus japonicus gene (Ljsbp) encoding a putative polypeptide with striking homology to the mammalian 56-kDa selenium-binding protein (SBP). cDNA clones homologous to LjSBP were also isolated from soybean, Medicago sativa, and Arabidopsis thaliana. Comparative expression studies in L japonicus and A. thaliana showed that sbp transcripts are present in various tissues and at different levels. Especially in L japonicus nodules and seedpods and A. thaliana siliques, sbp expression appears to be developmentally up-regulated. sbp Gene transcripts were localized b

Expression patterns conferred by tyrosine/dihydroxyphenylalanine decarboxylase promoters from opium poppy are conserved in transgenic tobacco.

Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) contains a large family of tyrosine/dihydroxyphenylalanine decarboxylase (tydc) genes involved in the biosynthesis of benzylisoquinoline alkaloids and cell wall-bound hydroxycinnamic acid amides. Eight members from two distinct gene subfamilies have been isolated, tydc1, tydc4, tydc6, tydc8, and tydc9 in one group and tydc2, tydc3, and tydc7 in the other. The tydc8 and tydc9 genes were located 3.2 kb apart on one genomic clone, suggesting that the family is clustered. Transcripts for most tydc genes were detected only in roots. Only tydc2 and tydc7 revealed exp

Localization, conjugation, and function of salicylic acid in tobacco during the hypersensitive reaction to tobacco mosaic virus.

Salicylic acid (SA) is hypothesized to be a natural signal that triggers the systemic induction of pathogenesis-related proteins and disease resistance in tobacco. When Xanthi-nc (NN genotype) tobacco was inoculated with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) there was an increase in endogenous SA in both inoculated and virus-free leaves. The highest levels of SA were detected in and around necrotic lesions that formed in response to TMV. Chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis of extracts from TMV-inoculated leaves demonstrated the presence of a SA conjugate tentatively identified as O-beta-D-glucosyl-SA. The

Manganese enrichment in rice seedlings shifts cadmium accumulation from inhibition to promotion during growth via transcriptomic mechanisms.

Manganese (Mn)-rich seedling cultivation may reduce cadmium (Cd) uptake in rice; however, its stage-dependent effects and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Mn-rich seedlings were cultivated in a hydroponic system. Biomass, Cd and Mn accumulation, and transcriptomic profiles were subsequently assessed at different growth stages. The results demonstrated that Mn enrichment increased Mn accumulation in the seedlings by 18.9-76.0-fold. On day 26 after transplantation, Cd concentrations in roots and shoots were reduced by 79.9% and 89.2%, respectively, in Mn-rich seedlings. However, this effect

Cellular remodeling of ovarian follicular epithelial cells transmits an obligate nutritional endosymbiont in a scale insect.

Many insects show complex associations with vertically transmitted endosymbionts. Here, we describe unique cellular remodeling of the oocyte's follicular epithelial cells into endosymbiont-bearing tubular structures in the ensign scale insect Insignorthezia insignis (Hemiptera: Ortheziidae). Vitellogenic oocytes develop a bulge-like distension at the posterior pole. Here, follicular epithelial cells undergo extensive cellular reorganization, remodeling their actin cytoskeleton and plasma membrane to produce cellular protrusions. These tubular protrusions, which are densely packed with the endo

Host-Associated Occurrence of Wolbachia in Natural Populations of the Pyriform Scale Protopulvinaria pyriformis (Cockerell, 1894) in Moroccan Orchards.

Scale insects are a highly diverse group of phloem-feeding pest insects that cause economic losses in a wide range of cultivated crops worldwide. Among these pests, Protopulvinaria pyriformis (Cockerell, 1894), recently reported in Morocco, represents an emerging threat to citrus (Citrus spp.) and avocado (Persea americana) production, two strategically important crops in the country. Like other hemipterans, P. pyriformis maintains close associations with prokaryotic endosymbionts, particularly Wolbachia, a facultative intracellular bacterium capable of influencing host reproduction, populatio

Analysis of gut microbiota of ladybug beetle (Harmonia axyridis) after feeding on different artificial diets.

BACKGROUND: Harmonia axyridis is an effective natural enemy insect to a variety of phloem-sucking pests and Lepidopteran larvae, such as aphids, scabies, and phylloxera, while its industrial production is limited due to unmature artificial diet. Insect intestinal microbiota affect host development and reproduction. The aim of this study is to understand intestinal microbiota composition of H. axyridis and screen effective probiotics on artificial diet. Considering the role of the components and composition of the diet on the structure and composition of the intestinal microbiome, four kinds of

Changes in SWEET-mediated sugar partitioning affect photosynthesis performance and plant response to drought.

Sugars, produced through photosynthesis, are at the core of all organic compounds synthesized and used for plant growth and their response to environmental changes. Their production, transport, and utilization are highly regulated and integrated throughout the plant life cycle. The maintenance of sugar partitioning between the different subcellular compartments and between cells is important in adjusting the photosynthesis performance and response to abiotic constraints. We investigated the consequences of the disruption of four genes coding for SWEET sugar transporters in Arabidopsis (SWEET11

Plant jasmonic acid mediated contrasting effects of two citrus aphid species on Diaphorina citri Kuwayama.

BACKGROUND: Herbivores may influence each other directly and through plant mediated inter-specific interactions. The Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri Kuwayama) and citrus aphids are key pests that can co-exist on citrus, but their plant-mediated interaction between them is unknown. Here we investigated plant-mediated effect of two citrus aphid species, the polyphagous Aphis spiraecola Patch and the oligophagous Aphis (Toxoptera) citricidus (Kirkaldy) on the feeding behavior and reproduction of Diaphorina citri, and explored the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS: In comparison with those on

Effects of iron oxide nanoparticles on Fe and heavy metal accumulation in castor (Ricinus communis L.) plants and the soil aggregate.

In this study, the effects of iron (Fe) nanoparticles (NPs) on Fe and heavy metal accumulations by castor (Ricinus communis L.) plants were investigated. The castor cultivar was planted in the soil contaminated with Pb and Zn for 48 days with Fe2O3 NPs treatments. The Fe and heavy metal concentrations in the plant tissues, the plant tissues' ultrastructures, and the Fe and heavy metal distributions in the soil aggregate were analyzed. The results of this study indicate that there is a mutual promotion relationship between Fe and heavy metals (Pb and Zn). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

Tomato SD1, encoding a kinase-interacting protein, is a major locus controlling stem development.

Stems serve as key determinants of plant development by connecting and supporting parts of the plant body, transporting nutrients important for long-distance communication that affect crop yield, and producing new organs. Nonetheless, studies on the regulation of stem development in crops are rather limited. Here, we found a significant correlation (P<0.001) between stem diameter (SD) and fruit size in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). We performed a genome-wide association study and identified a novel quantitative trait locus (QTL), SDR9 (stem diameter regulator on CHROMOSOME 9), that co-localiz

Effects of bud-flushing strategies on tree growth.

Allocation of carbohydrates between competing organs is fundamental to plant development, growth and productivity. Carbohydrates are synthesized in mature leaves and distributed via the phloem vasculature to developing buds where they are consumed to produce new biomass. The distribution and mass-allocation processes within the plant remain poorly understood and may involve complex feedbacks between different plant functions, with implications for the emergent structure of the plant. Here, we investigate how the order in which dormant buds are flushed affects the development of tree size and r

Autophagy controls resource allocation and protein storage accumulation in Arabidopsis seeds.

Autophagy is essential for nutrient recycling and plays a fundamental role in seed production and grain filling in plants. Autophagy participates in nitrogen remobilization at the whole-plant level, and the seeds of autophagy mutants present abnormal C and N contents relative to wild-type (WT) plants. It is well known that autophagy (ATG) genes are induced in leaves during senescence; however, expression of such genes in seeds has not yet been reported. In this study we show that most of the ATG genes are induced during seed maturation in Arabidopsis siliques. Promoter-ATG8f::UIDA and promoter

The ethylene response factor Pti5 contributes to potato aphid resistance in tomato independent of ethylene signalling.

Ethylene response factors (ERFs) comprise a large family of transcription factors that regulate numerous biological processes including growth, development, and response to environmental stresses. Here, we report that Pti5, an ERF in tomato [Solanum lycopersicum (Linnaeus)] was transcriptionally upregulated in response to the potato aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), and contributed to plant defences that limited the population growth of this phloem-feeding insect. Virus-induced gene silencing of Pti5 enhanced aphid population growth on tomato, both on an aphid-susceptible cultivar and on

Parameter estimation of a plant uptake model for cyanide: application to hydroponic data.

A plant uptake model is applied to describe free cyanide and ferrocyanide transport and fate in willow (Salix eriocephala var. Michaux) grown in hydroponics. The model is applied to experimental data to determine best-fit parameter values, their associated uncertainty, and their relative importance to field-scale phytoremediation applications. The fitted model results, using least-squares optimization of the observed log concentrations, indicate that free cyanide volatilization from leaf tissue and free cyanide cell wall adsorption were negligible. The free cyanide maximum uptake rate and assi

A genomic perspective on nutrient provisioning by bacterial symbionts of insects.

Many animals show intimate interactions with bacterial symbionts that provision hosts with limiting nutrients. The best studied such association is that between aphids and Buchnera aphidicola, which produces essential amino acids that are rare in the phloem sap diet. Genomic studies of Buchnera have provided a new means for inferring metabolic capabilities of the symbionts and their likely contributions to hosts. Despite evolutionary reduction of genome size, involving loss of most ancestral genes, Buchnera retains capabilities for biosynthesis of all essential amino acids. In contrast, most g

Magnesium deficiency results in accumulation of carbohydrates and amino acids in source and sink leaves of spinach.

Accumulation of assimilates in source leaves of magnesium-deficient plants is a well-known feature. We had wished to determine whether metabolite concentrations in sink leaves and roots are affected by magnesium nutrition. Eight-week-old spinach plants were supplied either with a complete nutrient solution (control plants) or with one lacking Mg (deficient plants) for 12 days. Shoot and root fresh weights and dry weights were lower in deficient than in control plants. Mg concentrations in deficient plants were 11% of controls in source leaves, 12% in sink leaves and 26% in roots, respectively.
