Controlled preparation of Au/Ag/SnO2 core-shell nanoparticles using a photochemical method and applications in LSPR based sensing.

A photochemical method for the controlled preparation of core-shell Au/Ag/SnO2 nanorods (NRs) and nanospheres (NSs) has been developed based on photo-induced electron transfer processes in the plasmonic metal-semiconductor system. Au/AgNR/SnO2 and Au/AgNS/SnO2 were prepared by the UV irradiation of a mixture of mesoporous SnO2 coated AuNRs, or AuNSs, and AgNO3, in which AgNO3 was reduced by electrons transferred from the photo-excited mesoporous SnO2 (semiconductor) to the gold (metal). This method allows precise control over the composition and optical properties of the obtained nanoparticles

Photon Management in Photochemical Synthesis and Reactor Scale-Up.

ConspectusPhotochemical methods have become indispensable in modern organic synthesis by enabling unique reactivities under mild conditions through electron transfer, energy transfer, and other radical-based pathways. In contrast to thermally driven reactions, however, photochemical processes are fundamentally governed by the delivery and utilization of photons. Wavelength, light intensity, photon flux, optical path length, and reactor geometry collectively determine how efficiently photons are absorbed and translated into chemical reactivity. Importantly, increasing light intensity does not n

Silicon differentially protects PSII and PSI photochemistry and preserves fatty acid metabolism in salt-stressed Sorghum bicolor (L.).

BACKGROUND: Silicon (Si) has been demonstrated to be an important element to enhance crop tolerance against salinity. Nevertheless, mechanisms underlying Si's mitigation of salt stress remains insufficiently explored and understood. This study aims to provide new insights into Si's impact on salt-stressed Sorghum bicolor (L.) supplied or not with 0.5 mmol L-1 of sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) by combining the assessment of photosystems performance, fatty acid metabolism as linked to membrane integrity, and molecule's chemical structure stability. RESULTS: Relative to sodium chloride (NaCl) treatme

Photochemically Induced Hydrogen Atom Transfer and Intramolecular Radical Cyclization Reactions with Oxazolones.

Photochemically induced intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer in oxazolones is reported. An acetal or thioacetal function at the side chain acts as a hydrogen donor while the photochemical exited oxazolone is the acceptor. A one-step process─the electron and the proton are simultaneously transferred─is productive, while electron transfer followed by proton transfer is inefficient. Radical combination then takes place, leading to the formation of a C-C or C-N bond. The regioselectivity of the reaction is explained by the diradical/zwitterion dichotomy of radical intermediates at the singlet sta

From Protohypericin to Hypericin: Photoconversion Analysis Using a Time-Resolved Thermal Lens Technique.

Hypericin (Hyp) is a natural compound with interesting photophysical and pharmacological properties, which has been used in photodynamic therapy and photodynamic inactivation of microorganisms. Its synthesis is based on a series of chemical processes that ends with a light-drug interaction by the photoconversion of protohypericin (pHyp) to Hyp. Although this photosensitizer is used in a variety of medical applications, the photophysical and photochemical mechanisms involved in the final step related to the photo production of Hyp are not completely understood at the molecular level. Aerosols from fires: an examination of the effects on ozone photochemistry in the Western United States.

This study presents a first attempt to investigate the roles of fire aerosols in ozone (O(3)) photochemistry using an online coupled meteorology-chemistry model, the Weather Research and Foresting model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem). Four 1-month WRF-Chem simulations for August 2007, with and without fire emissions, were carried out to assess the sensitivity of O(3) predictions to the emissions and subsequent radiative feedbacks associated with large-scale fires in the Western United States (U.S.). Results show that decreases in planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) resulting from the radiative e

Soil and litter emission sources as important contributors to ozone production from volatile organic compounds in island tropical forests.

While studies have confirmed that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted directly by tropical island forest vegetation significantly influence ozone (O3) production and climate change through atmospheric oxidation processes, the environmental effects of long-neglected soil and litter emission sources as key potential contributors to VOCs, particularly their driving mechanisms in near-surface O3 pollution formation, remain understudied. This investigation combines field observations with machine learning models to investigate the emission characteristics, sources, and contributions of VOCs f

Blinded by the light: Increased chlorophyll fluorescence of herbicide-exposed periphyton masks unfavorable structural responses during exposure and recovery.

In surface waters within agricultural catchments, periphyton - i.e., biofilms containing algae, heterotrophs, and associated detritus - is subjected to multiple stressors including herbicides. Although herbicide effects on periphyton are frequently studied, the focus has been on photosynthesis-inhibiting herbicides while other modes of toxic action have received little attention. Against this background, a 21-days-lasting bioassay was conducted, during which mature periphytic communities were exposed to the carotenoid-biosynthesis-inhibiting herbicide diflufenican for 12 days (up to 10 μg/L; n

Porphyrin-Peptide Bioconjugates: Photophysical Properties and Targeted Singlet Oxygen-Mediated Photooxidation of Amyloid-β.

The aberrant self-assembly of amyloid β (Aβ) peptides into toxic oligomers is a central event in Alzheimer's disease, motivating the development of molecular systems capable of modulating or degrading these species. Porphyrins and porphyrin-peptide bioconjugates have emerged as promising photoactive platforms due to their known ability to generate the highly oxidant singlet oxygen (1O2) upon light excitation. Still, the mechanisms underlying their oxidative effects on Aβ remain unclear. Here, we investigate the photophysical properties and the 1O2-mediated oxidation capability of two porphyrin

Comparative analysis of photocatalytic, enzymatic, and chemical approaches to identify canonical and noncanonical surfaceomes.

The cell surface is a critical nexus in cellular communication and a rich landscape yielding the majority of current therapeutic targets, yet only a small fraction of cell surface proteins have been targeted therapeutically. The cell surface proteome (surfaceome) comprises only ~1% of the human proteome by mass, motivating enrichment strategies to detect surfaceome alterations in disease for drug target discovery. Developments in photocatalytic technology have revolutionized the study of protein neighborhoods around specific targets of interest, but photocatalysis has been underutilized for gl

In Vivo Imaging of a Photoactivatable Platinum Prodrug by Metal-Centered Radiolabeling.

The in vivo fate of metal-based photoactivatable prodrugs is often unknown or inferred from structurally modified analogues rather than the drug candidates themselves, which may lack suitable spectroscopic reporters. New methods are needed to reveal authentic biological behavior. We report the multistep radiosynthesis of a photoactivatable platinum(IV) prodrug and new insights into its biomolecular properties from single-photon emission computed tomography imaging using (metastable) platinum-195m. Metal-centered radiolabeling preserves both the chemical identity and photoreactivity of the non-

Synthesis of Macrocyclic Peptides via Photochemical Radical Thiol-yne Reaction.

Peptide macrocyclization offers a versatile method for enhancing peptide stability, cell permeability, and biological activity. Herein, we report a radical-mediated, thiol-yne process for peptide macrocyclization, furnishing vinyl sulfide products. Our robust methodology enables the formation of cyclic peptides under mild conditions, generating a disulfide bioisostere to a range of biologically relevant neuropeptides, identifying a novel vinyl sulfide analogue of oxytocin with enhanced potency and redox stability over the parent compound. Cyclization was achieved using UV-A or blue LED irradia

Self-assembled perylene diimide/CuO p-n heterojunction-enhanced photoelectrochemical platform for sensitive dopamine detection.

The development of a highly efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) platform for the sensitive and selective detection of dopamine (DA) is of significant importance. In this study, an amine-propyl-functionalized perylene diimide (PA-PDI) self-assembly block material was fabricated and demonstrated a pronounced photoanodic current response under visible-light irradiation at 630 nm. Upon introduction of Cu2+, PA-PDI underwent structural reorganization from nanoflakes into nanobelts, leading to the in situ formation of a PA-PDI/CuO p-n heterojunction. This heterojunction markedly enhanced charge sep

Confinement-Induced Charge Branching in Bioinspired Vesicles Enables Self-Validated Photoelectrochemical Sensing.

A fundamental challenge in artificial photosynthesis and sensing is replicating nature's ability to direct energy flow away from destructive pathways. Here, we show that spatial confinement within bioinspired vesicles induces a deterministic charge-branching process between co-assembled porphyrin and carotenoid chromophores. This decouples the excited-state manifold, directing electrons toward the semiconductor for photoelectrochemical conversion while channeling radiative relaxation into a complementary fluorescence pathway. The two orthogonal signals, originating from a single binding event,

Detection of the Carcinogen Benzo[a]pyrene through Photochemically Induced Dynamic Nuclear Polarization: Linking Liquid-State 1H NMR with Spatially Resolved Imaging.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) with significant environmental prevalence and toxicological implications, is classified as a group 1 carcinogen. Nonetheless, the noninvasive in vivo traceability of BaP in biological systems faces a major challenge. In this study, we introduce a novel noninvasive NMR and MRI detection method for BaP utilizing light-induced signal enhancement through the photochemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (photo-CIDNP) effect to achieve new limits in sensitivity, contrast, and spatial resolution. TiO2 nanoengineering for high-performance photoelectrochemical biosensors: From fundamental strategies to frontier applications.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2), owing to its high stability, low cost, and good biocompatibility, has become a key material in the field of Photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors. However, its inherently wide bandgap and severe photogenerated charge carrier recombination fundamentally limit its photoelectric conversion efficiency, confining its light absorption primarily to the ultraviolet region. This review systematically summarizes recent advanced nanoengineering strategies developed to address these bottlenecks, including element doping, heterojunction construction, defect engineering, and multico

Suppression of NO2 Generation During One-Step Deep Oxidation of NO at a Semi-Artificial Photoenzyme Based on Cytochrome c.

Solar-driven catalysis holds promise in molecular oxygen activation and low-concentration NOx elimination but achieving highly selective conversion of NO to nontoxic nitrate (NO3 -), while suppressing toxic NO2 formation remains challenging. Here, we report a semi-artificial photoenzyme catalyst constructed by immobilizing mono-heme cytochrome c (cyt c) on carbon nitride (CN) to refine reactive species generation for deep NO oxidation. The hybrid photoenzyme catalyst establishes localized internal electric fields (IEF) between cyt c and CN that promote exciton dissociation, and creates polariz

Layer-by-Layer Assembled Polyelectrolytes on Ta3N5 Pyramid Arrays for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting.

Ta3N5 is a promising material for overall water splitting due to its suitable band positions and high theoretical photocurrent (12.9 mA cm-2). However, pristine Ta3N5 suffers from significant optical, recombination, and resistive losses, resulting in photocurrents and efficiencies far below theoretical expectations. To address these limitations, this work focuses on enhancing photocurrent and overall performance through structural and morphological engineering and surface functionalization. We investigated the potential of polyelectrolytes, poly(sodium-p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) with anionic gr
