Plasma is overused as a blood product worldwide; however, data supporting appropriate use of plasma is scant. Its most common utilization is for treatment of coagulopathy in actively bleeding patients; it is also used for coagulation optimization prior to procedures with specific coagulation profile targets. A baseline literature review in PUBMED and Google Scholar was done (1 January 2000 to 1 June 2023), utilizing the following search terms: plasma, fresh frozen plasma, lyophilized plasma, indications, massive transfusion protocol, liver disease, warfarin reversal, cardiothoracic surgery, IN

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) has traditionally been used to selectively remove pathologic contents including autoantibodies, abnormal proteins, immune complexes, or toxins from a patient's plasma. In addition to the removal of molecular contributors to disease, fluid replacement and infusion of beneficial plasma constituents including albumin can be tapered based on the pathophysiologic mechanisms of the offending disease. This treatment modality has shown efficacy in symptomatic relief and slowing of disease progression for various neurologic, immunologic, and hematologic diseases. This

Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a scarring alopecia that is characterized by a lichenoid interface infiltrate with follicular extension. We present a case of LPP composed predominantly of plasma cells in a 52-year-old man. The patient was originally diagnosed with scalp psoriasis 30 years before presentation. Punch biopsies performed at an outside institution 2 years before presentation revealed lymphocyte-predominant LPP. After referral to the senior author's institution due to inadequate response to therapy, biopsies demonstrated a robust, superficial, and deep lichenoid interface dermatitis co

Plasma exchange is a highly efficient technique to remove circulating autoantibodies and other humoral factors rapidly from the vascular compartment. It was the first effective acute treatment for peripheral disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and myasthenia gravis before intravenous immunoglobulin became available. The recent recognition of rapidly progressive severe antibody-mediated central nervous system disorders, such as neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders and anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate-receptor encephalitis, has renewed interest in using plasma exchange for their acute treatmen

Expansion of extracellular volume is a treatment traditionally proposed to correct abnormalities of renal perfusion and prevent ischemic injury. However, vascular filling is not at risk for tissue oxygenation and renal function. The use of synthetic colloids exposes the patient to the risk of developing lesions such as osmotic nephrosis. Hyperoncotic colloids reduce glomerular filtration pressure. The nephrotoxicity of hydroxyethyl starches is now clearly established regardless of their characteristics. Colloids have never demonstrated their superiority as plasma volume expanders, they should

BACKGROUND: Platelet-rich plasma is a novel material that is being used more frequently in many surgical specialties.
METHODS: A literature review on the current and potential uses of platelet-rich plasma in otolaryngology was performed.
RESULTS: There is limited evidence on the use of platelet-rich plasma in otolaryngology compared with other specialties: only 11 studies on various subspecialties (otology, rhinology and laryngology) were included in the final review.
CONCLUSION: Based on the limited number of studies, we cannot draw safe conclusions about the value of platelet-rich plasma

Unlike macroscopic and micrometer-sized solid electrodes whose surface can be reproducibly cleaned by mechanical polishing, cleaning the nanoelectrode surface is challenging because of its small size and extreme fragility. Even very gentle polishing typically changes the nanoelectrode size and geometry, thus, complicating the replication of nanoelectrochemical experiments. In this letter, we show the possibility of cleaning nanoelectrode surfaces nondestructively by using an air plasma cleaner. The effects of plasma cleaning have been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging, volt

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic disease with variable rate of progression. It is associated with inter- and intra-familial variability. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) has been implicated in pathological conditions and it is proposed as a biomarker for CKD progression. Our aim was to evaluate whether NGAL could be a good marker for progression of ADPKD, as we hypothesized. ADPKD patients with confirmed mutations (PKD1 n=33; PKD2 n=17) were enrolled and followed in a prospective study. Creatinine (sCr) and NGAL values were measured at baseline

Retinoids and rexinoids are prescribed for conditions ranging from acne vulgaris to hyperkeratosis to cutaneous T cell lymphoma. Dyslipidemia is a frequent consequence of the use of these drugs, with more than one-third of patients manifesting aberrations in triglyceride (TG) levels. The efficacy of retinoic acid derivatives is linked to their influence on lipid metabolism in the skin, which can impair systemic lipid trafficking and metabolism in some patients. Thus, baseline screening for preexisting dyslipidemia and regular follow-up lipid panels are mandated, especially when powerful agents

The use of therapeutic plasma has increased in France by more than 40% since 2002. This growth may be explained by the improvement in transfusion safety, the diminution of the risk of transmission of pathogens and the regained confidence of the physicians in blood products. Therapeutic plasma also benefits from additional procedures to reduce infectious (securisation) or immunological risks (selection of blood donors). Its application in massive transfusions has undergone a significant evolution over the last few years. A proactive attitude favouring early and important use of plasma on the ba

Plasma cells are medium-sized round-to-oval cells with eccentrically placed nuclei, usually found in the red pulp of the spleen, tonsils, medulla of the lymph nodes, nasal mucosa, upper airway, lamina propria of the gastrointestinal tract, and sites of inflammation. Plasma cell granuloma is a rare reactive tumor-like proliferation composed chiefly of plasmacytic infiltrate. Here, we present a case of plasma cell granuloma of lip in a female patient.

Hypovolemia is the most common cause of circulatory failure in children and may lead to critical tissue perfusion and eventually multiple-organ failure. Administration of fluids to maintain or restore intravascular volume represents a common intervention after hemorrhagic shock occurring during surgical procedures or in patients with trauma. Notwithstanding, there is uncertainty whether the type of fluid may significantly influence the outcome, especially in pediatrics. Both human albumin and crystalloids are usually administered: the advantages of crystalloids include low cost, lack of effect

Plasma utilization has increased over the past two decades, and there is a growing concern that many plasma transfusions are inappropriate. Plasma transfusion is not without risk, and certain complications are more likely with plasma than other blood components. Clinical and laboratory investigations of the patients suffering reactions after infusion of fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) define the etiology and pathogenesis of the panoply of adverse effects. We review here the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of the risks associated with plasma transfusion. Risks commonly associated with FFP inc

New methods for analysing both platelet and plasma forms of the platelet-specific collagen receptor, glycoprotein VI (GPVI) in experimental models or human clinical samples, and the development of the first therapeutic compounds based on dimeric soluble GPVI-Fc or anti-GPVI antibody-based constructs, coincide with increased understanding of the potential pathophysiological role of GPVI ligand binding and shedding. Platelet GPVI not only mediates platelet activation at the site of vascular injury where collagen is exposed, but is also implicated in the pathogenesis of other diseases, such as at

Plasma exchange (PE) is an extracorporeal blood purification technique designed for the removal of large molecular weight substances from plasma. Data regarding the use of PE in elderly patients is lacking, so this study analyzes the database of the Department of Dialysis at the University Hospital Center Zagreb (634 patients, 6237 procedures) for indications and complications in patients aged 65 years or older who were submitted to PE during the period from 1982 to 2007. A total of 50 patients in this age group were submitted to PE; their median age was 69 years (range 65-83). This population

Hypovolemia from a range of etiologies can lead to severe morbidity and mortality unless blood volume and tissue perfusion are restored. The treatment of hypovolemia has included the improvement and restoration of blood volume loss by the intravenous infusion of plasma expanding therapeutic agents. These have included crystalloid and/or colloid solutions, and a brisk controversy as to which modality is better has engaged therapeutics for the past 30 years. In addition, those favoring either modality have debated which crystalloid, and which colloid, is better. This area was given a dramatic tu
