Influence of Different Acids on the Transport of CdSe Quantum Dots from Polymer Nanocomposites to Food Simulants.

We fabricated polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) from low-density polyethylene and CdSe quantum dots (QDs) and used these materials to explore potential exposure after long-term storage in different acidic media that could be encountered in food contact applications. While the low-level release of QD-associated mass into all the food simulants was observed, exposure to dilute acetic acid resulted in more than double the mass transfer compared to that which occurred during exposure to dilute hydrochloric acid at the same pH. Conversely, exposure to citric acid resulted in a suppression of QD release

Lessons of leprosy: the emergence of TH17 cytokines during type II reactions (ENL) is teaching us about T-cell plasticity.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy was the first disease classified according to the thymus derived T-cell in the 1960s and the first disease classified by the cytokine profile as intact interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and interleukin-2 (IL2) or TH1 (tuberculoid) and deficient IFN-γ and IL2 or TH2 (lepromatous), in the 1980s. OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we set out to explore the T helper 17 (TH17) lymphocyte subset, the hallmark of T-cell plasticity, in skin biopsies from patients with erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) who were treated with thalidomide. METHOD: RNA was extracted from paraffin embedded tissue befor

The bZIP Transcription Factor PERIANTHIA: A Multifunctional Hub for Meristem Control.

As sessile organisms, plants are exposed to extreme variations in environmental conditions over the course of their lives. Since plants grow and initiate new organs continuously, they have to modulate the underlying developmental program accordingly to cope with this challenge. At the heart of this extraordinary developmental plasticity are pluripotent stem cells, which are maintained during the entire life-cycle of the plant and that are embedded within dynamic stem cell niches. While the complex regulatory principles of plant stem cell control under artificial constant growth conditions begi

Computed tomographic anatomy of the canine temporal bone.

This study aims to identify and describe structures of the temporal bone in normal dogs that can be depicted using computed tomography (CT). Five normal dogs of different breeds and both sexes ranging from 0.5 to 8 years were used as the study material. CT images of 2 mm thickness without abnormalities in the temporal bone were reviewed and analysed in bone and soft tissue settings. All images were compared with corresponding E 12 plastic-embedded cross sections of 3 mm thickness, which were acquired from anatomic cross sections of frozen beagles. The sections were provided from the Department

The vascularization of the os calcaneum and the clinical consequences.

This study was conducted to analyze extraosseous and intraosseous vascularization of the os calcaneum and to elucidate possible clinical manifestations. The arteries of 13 lower leg and foot specimens of human cadavers were injected with a polymer and subjected to maceration or were embedded in plastic. The examination revealed that 45% of the bone is vascularized via medial arteries and 45% via lateral arteries, whereas the remaining 10% is supplied by the sinus tarsi artery. From the medial side, two or three vessels branch off the posterior tibial artery, penetrate the calcaneus below the s

Glutamate immunoreactivity is enriched over pinealocytes of the gerbil pineal gland.

Mammalian pinealocytes have been shown to contain synaptic-like microvesicles with putative secretory functions. As a first step to elucidate the possibility that pinealocyte microvesicles store messenger molecules, such as neuroactive amino acids, we have studied the distributional pattern of glutamate immunoreactivity in the pineal gland of the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) at both light- and electron-microscopic levels. In semithin sections of plastic-embedded pineals, strong glutamate immunoreactivity could be detected in pinealocytes throughout the pineal gland. The density of

Circulating Sézary cells in the diagnosis of Sézary syndrome (quantitative and morphometric analyses).

Plastic-embedded circulating Sézary cells were examined in semithin and thin sections (assisted by the nuclear contour index-NCI). Eight cases of Sézary syndrome were analyzed as well as 11 controls (3 cases of widespread eczemas and 8 cases of erythroderma), 7 cases of mycosis fungoides, and 3 healthy individuals. Discriminating criteria between Sézary syndrome and benign diseases were sought: in addition to Sézary cells (NCI greater than 6.5) intermediate lymphocytes (5.0 less than NCI less than or equal to 6.5) proved to be helpful. Cases with Sézary syndrome were clearly differentiated whe

Long-term effects of a lumbosacral ventral root avulsion injury on axotomized motor neurons and avulsed ventral roots in a non-human primate model of cauda equina injury.

Here, we have translated from the rat to the non-human primate a unilateral lumbosacral injury as a model for cauda equina injury. In this morphological study, we have investigated retrograde effects of a unilateral L6-S2 ventral root avulsion (VRA) injury as well as the long-term effects of Wallerian degeneration on avulsed ventral roots at 6-10 months post-operatively in four adult male rhesus monkeys. Immunohistochemistry for choline acetyl transferase and glial fibrillary acidic protein demonstrated a significant loss of the majority of the axotomized motoneurons in the affected L6-S2 segm

Histopathological differences between temporary and permanent threshold shift.

The structural changes associated with noise-induced temporary threshold shift (TTS) were compared to the damage associated with permanent threshold shift (PTS). A within-animal paradigm involving survival-fixation was used to minimize problems with data interpretation from interanimal variability in response to noise. Auditory brainstem response thresholds for clicks and tone pips were determined pre- and 1-2 h post-exposure in 11 chinchillas. The animals were exposed for 24 h to an octave band of noise with a center frequency of 4 kHz and a sound pressure level of 86 dB. Three animals (0/0-d

KeratoDynamics of transdifferentiation and dyskeratosis in odontogenic keratocysts.

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) exhibit paradoxical biological behavior, displaying both cystic architecture and neoplastic potential. Their recurrence and local aggressiveness are believed to stem from epithelial plasticity and aberrant keratinization. This study introduces the concept of KeratoDynamics, a molecular framework integrating the processes of transdifferentiation and dyskeratosis in OKCs, through the analysis of three key biomarkers-Ki-67, c-Myc, and CK19. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples of recurrent and non-recurrent OKCs were examined histologically and immunohistochemi

Fractured Paths, Unrealised Potentials: Teacher Education and Equality of Challenge.

Gifted Education remains a contested and unevenly integrated domain within Initial Teacher Education (ITE). Its position is further complicated by conceptual instability surrounding identification, classification, and educational equity. Despite substantial contributions across psychology, neuroscience, and education, its translation into practice is constrained by conceptual instability, fragmented disciplinary accounts, and institutional pressures toward standardisation. This paper argues that the marginalisation of diverse Highly Able learners is not primarily due to insufficient knowledge,

Emergence of outbreak-driving high-risk Pseudomonas aeruginosa lineages in Taiwan: phylogenomic insights into ST292 and the ST235* sublineage.

The global rise of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) poses a significant threat to public health. Through active surveillance conducted between 2021 and 2022, we collected 92 distinct CRPA isolates and identified a clonal shift toward high-risk lineages ST235* and ST292. Whole-genome sequencing and phylogenomic analysis revealed that ST235*, a single-locus variant of epidemic ST235, exhibited broader antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and carried a nalD loss-of-function mutation, resulting in MexAB-OprM overexpression. Two ST235* isolates contained a hybrid resistance cassette wit

Bridging the Bond: High-Sensitivity External Printed Strain Sensors for Condition Monitoring of Adhesive Joints.

Adhesive joints typically require high safety factors, as their mechanical performance is highly sensitive to environmental and manufacturing variations. Health monitoring can reduce these safety factors by continuously assessing the condition of the joint. While intrinsic and extrinsic sensing approaches exist, they are often based on periodic inspection or manual sensor integration, which limits their suitability for continuous in-service monitoring. This study investigates a novel sensor placement using additively manufactured strain sensors deposited by jet dispensing across the adhesive g

Social buffering in domestic dogs: Are the owners able to decrease dogs' frustration during a non-social task?

The presence of a familiar human reduces the stress responses of domestic dogs to different stimuli, a phenomenon known as social buffering. Recently, it was observed that this attenuating effect could also occur in relation to frustration generated by the omission of an expected reward in a social task. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of social buffering on frustration induced during extinction in a non-social problem-solving task. Dogs were exposed to an apparatus in which they had to remove embedded plastic bones to obtain the food underneath them. Three phases were carrie

Cross-Night Modulation of Change Detection ERPs to Foreign Speech Sound Features During N2 Sleep.

The sleeping brain can discriminate speech sounds, but evidence for cross-night changes in neural responses to foreign speech in adults remains limited. Here, Finnish-speaking adults naïve to tonal languages were exposed during Stage N2 of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep to small and large deviations in tone (pitch contour) embedded in vowel /a/ across four consecutive nights, while electroencephalography was recorded. Event-related potentials (ERPs) P2 and P450 revealed robust change detection responses to tone deviations during sleep, and importantly, P450 amplitude decreased from night

Using a non-surgical transcutaneous intraglandular injection technique to deliver cell and cell-free therapies to murine submandibular salivary glands.

Salivary Glands (SGs) are vital organs that are particularly prone to damage due to head and neck cancer radiation treatment, as well as other autoimmune disorders. SG hypofunction often impairs the production of saliva, which causes a significant loss of functioning for the oral cavity. There are a multitude of treatments for rescuing SG hypofunction; however, they are usually administered systemically, causing adverse effects and requiring higher doses of the agents. More localised approaches have demonstrated adequate potential as alternative treatments but are still in their initial stages

Investigation of chimeric transcripts derived from LINE-1 and Alu retrotransposons in cerebellar tissues of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

LINE-1 and Alu retrotransposons are components of the human genome and have been implicated in many human diseases. These elements can influence human transcriptome plasticity in various mechanisms. Chimeric transcripts derived from LINE-1 and Alu can also impact the human transcriptome, such as exonization and post-transcriptional modification. However, its specific role in ASD neuropathology remains unclear, particularly in the cerebellum tissues. We performed RNA-sequencing of post-mortem cerebellum tissues from ASD and unaffected individuals for transposable elements profiling and chimeric

De novo stem cell establishment in meristems requires repression of organ boundary cell fate.

Stem cells play important roles in animal and plant biology, as they sustain morphogenesis and tissue replenishment following aging or injury. In plants, stem cells are embedded in multicellular structures called meristems. The formation of new meristems is essential for the plastic expansion of the highly branched shoot and root systems. In particular, axillary meristems (AMs) that produce lateral shoots arise from the division of boundary domain cells at the leaf base. The CUP-SHAPED COTYLEDON (CUC) genes are major determinants of the boundary domain and are required for AM initiation. Howev
