Is the Frequency of a Targeted Neuromuscular Training Program a Factor in Modifying Knee Joint Loading During Typical Netball Landing Tasks?

BACKGROUND: Unplanned sidestep cutting and forward single-leg jump-landing contribute to non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in netball. Neuromuscular training programs (NMTPs) have shown promising results in reducing injury risk in certain populations when compliance is high. Compliance is easier to achieve when NMTPs are effective yet require minimal time for completion. HYPOTHESIS: Once- and thrice-weekly intervention groups would be equally effective in reducing knee abduction and internal rotation moments during forward single-leg jump landing and unplanned sidestep cut

Greater explosive quadriceps strength is associated with greater knee flexion at initial contact during landing in females.

This study investigated the influences of explosive quadriceps strength and landing task on sagittal plane knee biomechanics. Forty female participants performed isometric knee extensions on a dynamometer and had lower extremity biomechanics assessed during double-leg jump-landings (DLJL) and single-leg jump-cuts (SLJC). Explosive quadriceps strength was quantified by calculating rate of torque development (RTD) between torque onset and 100 ms after onset on a dynamometer. Participants were stratified into high and low RTD groups. Landing biomechanics were compared using 2 (Group) × 2 (Task) m

Step-Down Task Identifies Differences in Ankle Biomechanics Across Functional Activities.

Currently, there is no clinical exam to evaluate ankle frontal plane kinematics. The purpose of this study was to determine whether individuals identified as "lateral" landing during a video-recorded step-down task have differences in ankle inversion as measured with 3-dimensional motion capture during walking, step-down, and jump-landing tasks compared to individuals identified as "non-lateral". Fifty-seven recreationally active adults completed the descriptive laboratory study. During walking, step-down, and jump-landing tasks, participants had their ankle frontal plane kinematics measured u

Inter-Segmental Timing as A Contributing Factor to Knee Loading in Stop-Jump Landings.

Landing tasks are a major contributor to knee injuries in sport. While biomechanical determinants of knee joint loading have already been studied, less attention has been given to the role of inter-segmental timing during sport-specific landings. This study aimed to examine both biomechanical and temporal predictors of knee joint loading during horizontal and vertical phases of stop-jump landings. Thirty-three male volleyball and basketball players performed stop-jump tasks while lower-limb kinematics, kinetics, patellar tendon forces, and anterior tibial shear forces were calculated. Inertial Sensors are a Valid Tool to Detect and Consistently Quantify Jumping.

Considering the large and repetitive loads associated with jumping in team sports, automatic detection and quantification of jumping may show promise in reducing injury risks. The aim of this study was to validate commercially available inertial-movement analysis software to detect and quantify jumping in team sports. In addition, the test-retest reliability of the software to quantify jumping was assessed. Seventy-six healthy male participants completed a team sport circuit six times containing seven common movements (including three countermovement and two single-leg jumps) whilst wearing an

Sport-specific biomechanical responses to an ACL injury prevention programme: A randomised controlled trial.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention programmes have not been as successful at reducing injury rates in women's basketball as in soccer. This randomised controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov #NCT02530333) compared biomechanical adaptations in basketball and soccer players during jump-landing activities after an ACL injury prevention programme. Eighty-seven athletes were cluster randomised into intervention (6-week programme) and control groups. Three-dimensional biomechanical analyses of drop vertical jump (DVJ), double- (SAG-DL) and single-leg (SAG-SL) sagittal, and double- (FRON

Strain Response of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament to Uniplanar and Multiplanar Loads During Simulated Landings: Implications for Injury Mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Despite basic characterization of the loading factors that strain the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the interrelationship(s) and additive nature of these loads that occur during noncontact ACL injuries remain incompletely characterized. HYPOTHESIS: In the presence of an impulsive axial compression, simulating vertical ground-reaction force during landing (1) both knee abduction and internal tibial rotation moments would result in increased peak ACL strain, and (2) a combined multiplanar loading condition, including both knee abduction and internal tibial rotation moments, woul

Applying Differential Learning During Rehabilitation After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: A Basketball Single-Case Study.

Background/Objectives: Differential learning (DL) amplifies natural fluctuations in movement execution and, in its more extreme forms, facilitates repetition-free training with minimal external feedback. While increasingly recognized in the field of skill acquisition, its application in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rehabilitation remains underexplored. Methods: This study examined the application of DL in the rehabilitation of an 18-year-old trained basketball player following left-ACL reconstruction. The athlete completed a 42-week rehabilitation program in which DL principles were incorp

Pull-Up Performance Is Affected Differently by the Muscle Contraction Regimens Practiced during Training among Climbers.

Sport climbing performance is highly related to upper limb strength and endurance. Although finger-specific methods are widely analyzed in the literature, no study has yet quantified the effects of arm-specific training. This study aims to compare the effects of three types of training involving different muscle contraction regimens on climbers' pull-up capabilities. Thirty advanced to high-elite climbers were randomly divided into four groups: eccentric (ECC; n = 8), isometric (ISO; n = 7), plyometric (PLYO; n = 6), and no specific training (CTRL; n = 9), and they participated in a 5-week tra

Biceps femoris long head stiffens after 2 weeks of training cessation in highly trained sprinters.

PURPOSE: Most athletes experience short-term training cessation because of illness, injury, post-season vacation, or other reasons. Passive muscle stiffness is a potential risk factor for a sprint-type hamstring strain injury, but limited information is available about the effect of short-term training cessation on passive muscle stiffness. The present study aimed to identify whether and how passive muscle stiffness of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) would vary due to 2 weeks of training cessation in sprinters. METHODS: Passive BFlh shear-wave speed (a proxy for stiffness) was measured us

M. biceps femoris - A wolf in sheep's clothing: The downside of a lower limb injury prevention training.

Both, hamstring and ACL injuries are among the most typical injuries, particularly in change of direction and high speed running sports. They're also difficult to treat. Therefore, in the past few years, sports medicine practitioners and exercise scientists have mainly been focusing on the development and implementation of preventive programs in order to reduce the number of lower limb injuries, mainly by improving knee alignment. A number of studies have been able to prove the success of these training interventions, which are mainly addressing sensorimotor abilities and plyometric activities

Could targeted exercise programmes prevent lower limb injury in community Australian football?

BACKGROUND: Australian football is a popular sport in Australia, at both the community and elite levels. It is a high-speed contact sport with a higher incidence of medically treated injuries when compared with most other organized sports. Hamstring injuries, ligament injuries to the knee or ankle, hip/groin injuries and tendinopathies are particularly common and often result in considerable time lost from sport. Consequently, the prevention of lower limb injuries is a priority for both community and elite Australian football organizations. There is considerable literature available on exercis
