Ornithophily in the trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans).

The diversification of hummingbirds (Trochilidae) has shaped the pollination strategies and floral trait evolution in at least 68 families of flowering plants in the Western Hemisphere. The trumpet creeper (Bignoniaceae) is the quintessential example of ornithophily in eastern North America. The mutualistic relationship between this orange-flowered liana and the ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) was illustrated as early as 1731. However, neither historical nor modern accounts accurately describe the feeding behavior of ruby-throats at trumpet creeper flowers or the floral adapta

The antennal transcriptome analysis and characterizations of odorant-binding proteins in Megachile saussurei (Hymenoptera, Megachilidae).

BACKGROUND: Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) are essential in insect's daily behaviors mediated by olfactory perception. Megachile saussurei Radoszkowski (Hymenoptera, Megachilidae) is a principal insect pollinating alfalfa (Medicago sativa) in Northwestern China. The olfactory function have been less conducted, which provides a lot of possibilities for our research. RESULTS: Our results showed that 20 OBPs were identified in total. Multiple sequence alignment analysis indicated MsauOBPs were highly conserved with a 6-cysteine motif pattern and all belonged to the classic subfamily, coding 113

Comparative transcriptomic analysis of loquat floral fragrance and hormone synthesis regulation across developmental stages in petals and stamens.

INTRODUCTION: Loquat Eriobotrya japonica is a native plant in China that blooms at low temperatures in early winter, and the floral fragrance volatiles from the petals and stamens of loquats' flowers are attractive to wild pollinators like Chinese honeybees. Thus, it was necessary to reveal the biosynthesis of floral fragrance and hormone regulation involved in the insect pollination of loquats' flowers. METHODS: Here, the volatile contents of petals and stamens were significantly higher than those of other parts of the loquat flower through the analysis of GC, and a key loquat flowers' compo

Two LEAFY homologs regulate floral patterning and development without affecting flowering time in kiwifruit.

Actinidia chinensis (kiwifruit) are economically important fruit-bearing woody perennial vines but with a long juvenile phase, which slows plant breeding efforts. LEAFY (LFY) encodes a plant-specific transcription factor central to the reproductive pathway in many plants and its overexpression can accelerate flowering, including in some trees. We identified two kiwifruit LFY genes that are expressed in actively growing apical buds. Overexpression of AcLFY1 or AcLFY2 promoted flowering in Arabidopsis, but did not accelerate flowering in kiwifruit. Instead, branching at the lower nodes and chang

Alq mutation increases fruit set rate and allows the maintenance of fruit yield under moderate saline conditions.

Arlequin (Alq) is a gain-of-function mutant whose most relevant feature is that sepals are able to become fruit-like organs due to the ectopic expression of the ALQ-TAGL1 gene. The role of this gene in tomato fruit ripening was previously demonstrated. To discover new functional roles for ALQ-TAGL1, and most particularly its involvement in the fruit set process, a detailed characterization of Alq yield-related traits was performed. Under standard conditions, the Alq mutant showed a much higher fruit set rate than the wild type. A significant percentage of Alq fruits were seedless. The results

Rhinitis symptoms caused by grass pollen are associated with elevated basophile allergen sensitivity and a larger grass-specific immunoglobulin E fraction.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms responsible for the difference between clinically irrelevant IgE-sensitization and allergic rhinitis are not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the humoral and cellular mechanisms that may be associated with the presence of allergic rhinitis symptoms. METHODS: We selected 26 subjects with positive grass pollen skin tests and IgE antibodies to Timothy (g6) and the major grass allergens rPhl p 1, 5b. Fourteen of those patients reported a history of allergic rhinitis. During winter, we performed a grass pollen CD63 basophile activation test using four log aller

Local Trade-Offs Shape Flower Size Evolution Across Arabidopsis thaliana Distribution.

The remarkable variation in floral form and size is thought to have driven the evolutionary radiation of angiosperms and has traditionally been attributed to pollinator-mediated selection on floral displays, yet emerging evidence indicates that abiotic environmental factors can also generate and filter variation in flower size. Here, we investigate the geographic variation in reproductive organ growth in the self-fertilising species Arabidopsis thaliana, where the loss of pollinator dependence is predicted to favour reduced floral investment through resource reallocation. We find extensive var

Assessing the relative contributions of different Arabidopsis thaliana stigma factors to pollen hydration.

Following pollination, Arabidopsis pollen grains rapidly hydrate through the transfer of water from the stigma to the pollen. Several stigma regulators of pollen hydration have been identified, and the corresponding mutants generally support milder defects in wildtype Col-0 pollen hydration, signifying the involvement of other unidentified factors in this process. Here, we uncovered a role for the stigma-specific mechanosensitive channel gene, MscS-Like 7 (MSL7), in supporting pollen hydration. While the msl7 mutant stigmas were found to support reduced hydration of wildtype Col-0 pollen, the

Development of accessible and scalable maize pollen storage technology.

The inherent short lifespan of Zea mays (maize, corn) pollen hinders crop improvement and challenges the hybrid seed production required to produce food, fuel, and feed. Decades of scientific effort on maize pollen storage technology have been unable to deliver a widely accessible protocol that works for liters of pollen at a hybrid seed production scale. Here we show how suppressing the pollen cellular respiration rate through refrigeration and optimizing gas exchange within the storage environment are the critical combination of factors for maintaining pollen viability in storage. The common

An exploratory study of the functional significance of the floral secretory structures in two Miconia species (Melastomataceae).

Aiming to verify whether the diversity of secretory structures with their respective exudates are or not responsible for the attendance of floral visitors in Miconia species, the floral secretory structures of two Amazonian species of Miconia were described and interpreted from the functional perspectives and observations of floral visitors. Flowers and floral visitors were collected in the field for 16 months. The flowers were subjected to standard anatomical analyzes using light and scanning electron microscopy, and the secretory structures were evaluated using histochemical tests. The insec

Quantitation of cytopathic honey bee viruses using the viral plaque assay method.

Viral pathogens are highly prevalent threats to our pollination workforce. Basic virological techniques for ascertaining infection intensity and quantifying infectious viral particles lag behind the research interest in pollinator-associated viruses. Here, we utilized the only available immortalized honey bee (Apis mellifera) cell line, AmE-711, to establish the first plaque assay protocol for a bee-infecting virus in honey bee cells. First, we demonstrate that AmE-711 is susceptible to acute bee paralysis virus (ABPV) despite being persistently infected with deformed wing virus. Then, we comp

Agrochemical-induced stress in stingless bees: peculiarities, underlying basis, and challenges.

The toxicological stress induced by pesticides, particularly neonicotinoid insecticides, and its consequences in bees has been the focus of much recent attention, particularly for honey bees. However, the emphasis on honey bees and neonicotinoids has led to neglect of the relevance of stingless bees, the prevailing pollinators of natural and agricultural tropical ecosystems, and of other agrochemicals, including other pesticides and even leaf fertilizers. Consequently, studies focusing on agrochemical effects on stingless bees are sparse, usually limited to histopathological studies, and lack

Environmental antibiotic and fungicide exposure differentially affects survival and carbohydrate-fueled flight performance in Apis mellifera.

Environmental contamination by antibiotics and fungicides is an emerging concern due to their widespread occurrence in agricultural ecosystems. The western honey bee, Apis mellifera, a key managed pollinator, is exposed to these contaminants through multiple pathways, including treated crops, contaminated water, and residues from apiculture, livestock waste, agricultural runoff, and wastewater discharges. The agrochemicals tetracycline and boscalid disrupt cellular energy metabolism and mitochondrial function in non-target organisms and may consequently compromise bee survival and the sustaine

Pollen Diet Diversity does not Affect Gut Bacterial Communities or Melanization in a Social and Solitary Bee Species.

Pollinators face many stressors, including reduced floral diversity. A low-diversity diet can impair organisms' ability to cope with additional stressors, such as pathogens, by altering the gut microbiome and/or immune function, but these effects are understudied for most pollinators. We investigated the impact of pollen diet diversity on two ecologically and economically important generalist pollinators, the social bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) and the solitary alfalfa leafcutter bee (Megachile rotundata). We experimentally tested the effect of one-, two-, or three-species pollen diets on gut

Differences among six woody perennials native to Northern Europe in their level of genetic differentiation and adaptive potential at fine local scale.

The ability of perennial species to adapt their phenology to present and future temperature conditions is important for their ability to retain high fitness compared to other competing plant species, pests, and pathogens. Many transplanting studies with forest tree species have previously reported substantial genetic differentiation among populations within their native range. However, the question of "how local is local" is still highly debated in conservation biology because studies on genetic patterns of variation within and among populations at the local scale are limited and scattered. Biomechanics of substrate boring by fig wasps.

Female insects of diverse orders bore into substrates to deposit their eggs. Such insects must overcome several biomechanical challenges to successfully oviposit, which include the selection of suitable substrates through which the ovipositor can penetrate without itself fracturing. In many cases, the insect may also need to steer and manipulate the ovipositor within the substrate to deliver eggs at desired locations before rapidly retracting her ovipositor to avoid predation. In the case of female parasitoid ichneumonid wasps, this process is repeated multiple times during her lifetime, thus

Effect of confounding cofactors on responses to pollens during natural season versus pollen challenge chamber exposure.

BACKGROUND: The severity of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (AR) symptomatology elicited after exposure to pollen in the absence versus the presence of confounding cofactors, such as in a pollen challenge chamber (PCC) and the natural pollinating season, respectively, might differ. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the correlation of AR severity in the natural season versus out-of-season PCC exposures. METHODS: Twenty-four Virginia live oak (VLO)-positive, 14 VLO-negative, 16 mountain cedar (MC)-positive, 8 MC-negative, and 26 ragweed-positive participants recorded AR symptoms (total symptom sc

A resurrection experiment reveals reduced adaptive potential in a common agricultural weed.

Adaptive evolution is critical to population responses under accelerating anthropogenic global change. Although theory and some empirical work suggest that contemporary rates of environmental change can be met by equally rapid evolutionary shifts, mismatches between expected and realized evolution remain common in natural systems. Using a resurrection approach, we demonstrate that the structure of genetic covariances among pollination and mating-system traits in the common morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea) is increasingly constraining evolutionary trajectories. Pollinator-attracting traits evol

Mouthpart homologies and life habits of Mesozoic long-proboscid scorpionflies.

Mesozoic long-proboscid scorpionflies (Mesopsychoidea) provide important clues to ancient plant-pollinator interactions. Among them, the family Aneuretopsychidae is especially important because its mouthparts are vital to deciphering the early evolution of Mesopsychoidea and putatively the origin of fleas (Siphonaptera). However, the identification of mouthpart homologs among Aneuretopsychidae remains controversial because of the lack of three-dimensional anatomical data. Here, we report the first Aneuretopsychidae from Late Cretaceous Burmese amber, which have short maxillary palpi and elonga

Residue dynamics of a contact and a systemic fungicide in pollen, nectar, and other plant matrices of courgette (Cucurbita pepo L.).

Pollen and nectar can be contaminated with a range of pesticides, including insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. Since these matrices are important food sources for pollinators and other beneficial insects, their contamination can represent a key route of exposure. However, limited knowledge exists with respect to pesticide residue levels and their dynamics in these matrices for many crops and active ingredients (AIs). We used controlled glasshouse studies to investigate the residue dynamics of a systemic (cyprodinil) and a contact (fludioxonil) fungicide in the floral matrices and other
